VFJ to Provide Upgraded Mine Protected Vehicles

  • The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Para-Military Forces will be strengthened to counter Maoist attacks in Naxal affected areas for saving precious lives of soldiers with the availability of upgraded version of Mine Protected Vehicles (MPVs).
  • Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ) is working on war footing to complete the upgradation of existing MPVs and likely to soon hand over the first vehicle. The VFJ already has production order for more than 300 upgraded MPVs including around 200 from Indian Army and 120 from Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • The VFJ has successfully upgraded the MPV and likely to soon handover to the users. Upgraded vehicle is more compatible to counter heavy land mine attacks by militants.

India Signs $200m Deal for Israeli SPICE Bombs

  • India has signed a secretive $200 million deal for assorted Israeli materiel, similar to innumerable defence-related procurements it has previously sourced from Tel Aviv following the establishment of formal bilateral diplomatic relations between the two countries in early 1992.
  • Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems declared that it had concluded a contract with 'an Asian country' to provide it bomb guidance kits, anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and software-enabled radios, but declined to identify its customer or further elaborate.

Indian Submarine INS Sindhuvir Officialy Inducted into Myanmar Navy

  • Myanmar officially inducted a submarine handed over by India in October. INS Sindhuvir was commissioned as UMS Minye Theinkhathu and inducted on the 73rd anniversary of the Myanmar Navy.
  • During the commissioning ceremony, Indian ambassador to Myanmar Saurabh Kumar was also present along with top brass of Myanmar's Navy.
  • The kilo class submarine has a displacement of 3000 tonnes, a diving depth of 300 metres and top speed at 20 knots. UMS Minye Theinkhathu is named after an ancient warrior and can operate for 45 days.
  • It is equipped with 40 km range wire-guided torpedoes and 3M-54 Klub anti-ship cruise missiles. Myanmar has built a submarine base for it in a highly classified location.

Indian and Vietnam Navies Undertake PASSEX Exercises in South China Sea

  • Indian and Vietnamese navies undertook PASSEX or Passage Exercise in the South China Sea. Indian Navy Ship INS Kiltan which reached Nha Rong Port, Ho Chi Minh City is taking part in the exercises which is being held from December 26-27. The Indian Ship reached the country with 10 tons of humanitarian assistance under Mission Sagar 3.
  • Current visit seeks to enhance maritime cooperation between the two navies and will further bolster the strong bonds of friendship between the two countries and contribute to security and stability in the region.
  • India and Vietnam have increased high-level engagement including defence engagement. New Delhi at the India-Vietnam virtual summit handed over the first of the 12 High-Speed Guard Boat to the country.

Myanmar Buys Military Aircraft from Jordan

  • Myanmar's air force is buying two Airbus CASA C295 aircraft worth $38.6 million from the Royal Jordanian Air Force to reduce dependence on Chinese armoury. Major General Zaw Min Tun informed that the new aircraft from Jordan are transport planes to replace the military's ageing fleet of Chinese-made Y-8s. However, CASA C295s can be outfitted to deploy paratroopers or serve as gunships.
  • The airplane is manufactured and assembled on the Airbus Protection and House facility in Seville, Spain. The airplane's quick takeoff and touchdown capabilities make them nicely suited to Myanmar's panorama. The deal is a part of Myanmar Navy efforts to look past China following realisation that navy hardware from China was sub-standard.

India Successfully Test-fires Medium Range Surface-to Air Missile

  • India successfully test-fired a medium range surface-to-air missile (MRSAM) from Odisha coast.
  • The missile was fired from a ground mobile launcher at launch pad number-1 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) near here at 3.55 pm, and it hit the target with accuracy.
  • An unmanned air vehicle (UAV), 'Banshee', was first flown into the air, which was hit by the MRSAM.
  • The DRDO has jointly developed the missile in collaboration with Israel Aerospace Industries.
  • The MRSAM has been manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Ltd.
  • After its induction into the Indian army, the missile will significantly enhance the combat effectiveness of the defence forces.

Super Hornet Clears Ski-jump Test

  • American aircraft manufacturer Boeing announced that its F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter successfully completed ski-jump trials, effectively paving the way for its use by the Indian Navy's aircraft carriers.
  • Boeing has been testing its Super Hornet fighter using a ground-based ski-jump at the Naval Air Sation near Patuxent River in Maryland to provide assurances to the Indian Navy that it will be suitable for induction onto the INS Vikramaditya, the INS Vikrant expected to be commissioned by 2022, and the INS Vishal which currently remains at the drawing board stage.
  • The Navy was scheduled to send a team to visit the Naval Air Station earlier this year but the trip had to be deferred due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
