SAHAYAK-NG: India's First Indigenous Air Dropped Container

  • The SAHAYAK-NG, an air droppable container was tested successfully by the Defence Ministry. It is the first indigenously developed air droppable container.
  • The SAHAYAK-NG can carry a payload up to fifty kilograms.
  • It can be dropped from heavy aircraft. It is GPS enabled. Furthermore, it is an advanced version of SAHAYAK Mk I.
  • The SAHAYAK-NG containers are completely water tight.
  • They are designed to withstand water entry shocks.
  • The rate of descent of SAHAYAK-NG container is controlled by a parachute system.
  • The SAHAYAK-NG was designed by Defence Research Development Organization (DRDO) and Avantel, a private company.

India and Pakistan Exchange List of Nuclear Installations

  • Pakistan and India conducted the annual practice of exchanging the list of their nuclear installations under a bilateral arrangement that prohibits them from attacking each other's atomic facilities.
  • The exchange was made in accordance with Article-II of the Agreement on Prohibition of Attacks against Nuclear Installations and Facilities between Pakistan and India, signed on December 31, 1988.
  • The exchange of information has been done consecutively since January 1, 1992.
  • The exchange of information comes despite the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan.

Government Clears Indian Navy Proposal to Buy 10 Shipborne Drones

  • After leasing two predator drones from the US, the Indian Navy is now going to urgently acquire 10 shipborne drones for enhancing its surveillance capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region, for which it has received government approval recently.
  • A proposal moved in fast track mode by the Indian Navy before the Defence Ministry, under which it will buy 10 Naval Shipborne Unmanned Aerial Systems for around Rs. 1,300 crores has been cleared by the government.

India has a Series of Military Trials Planned for 2021

  • India has a series of military tests and trials planned for 2021, including that of the Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) shield, an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system for submarines, and drones, besides a number of missiles, including a BrahMos with an 800-km range.
  • The trials for the indigenous AIP, which will allow conventional submarines to stay under water for a longer duration, is to begin in the first quarter of the new year, the sources added.
  • Another important trial that will take off is the one for phase 2 of the BMD, which aims to secure the country from all kinds of incoming missiles, including nuclear, and flying objects, through a multi-tier defence system. Phase 1 of the programme was completed last year.
  • Also on the agenda is the full-fledged trial of the indigenous Rustom 2 Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), which is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2021, after much delay.

India to Export Indigenous Akash Missile System

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced that India will start exporting the indigenous Akash missile system as it got an approval for the same from the cabinet.
  • The cabinet chaired by PM approved the export of Akash Missile System and a Committee for faster approvals has been created.
  • The Akash missile system is an important defence asset for the country with over 96 per cent indigenisation.
  • Developed by DRDO, it is India's first indigenously designed missile system and can target fighter jets, cruise missiles, drones and other aerial assets.
  • The export version of Akash will be different from the system currently deployed with Indian Armed Forces.
  • The Government of India intends to focus on exporting high value defence platforms, to achieve target of 5 Billion USD of defence export and improve strategic relations with friendly foreign countries.

US Approves Sale of 8 Apache Helicopters to Kuwait

  • According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), the US State Department signed off on arms sales to Kuwait worth over USD 4 billion that include eight Apache AH-64E helicopters, along with equipment upgrade of 16 older Apaches.
  • Another DSCA release informed about the State Department's approval of a proposed USD 200 million sale of spare parts for Kuwait's upgraded Patriot missile defence system.
  • The security agency said both sales will support the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a major non-NATO ally that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East.
