Rajnath Singh Approves Abolition of 9,304 Posts in Military Engineer Services

  • More than 9,300 posts in the Military Engineer Services (MES) are set to be abolished, after defence minister Rajnath Singh approved a proposal made by the army's Engineer-in-Chief. The MES is a construction and maintenance agency of the armed forces and has annual budget of around Rs 13,000 crore.
  • The abolition of the posts is one of the direct outcomes of the recommendations made by the Lt Gen DB Shekatkar committee report on enhancing the army's combat potential and trimming its revenue expenditure.

World Athletics Day is Celebrated on 7 May

  • The World Athletics Day was introduced by the IAAF to increase awareness about athletics and to encourage the youth to take up sports.
  • Although this day is celebrated in the month of May every year, in 2020, the IAAF marked May 7 as the World Athletics Day.

Indian Navy launches Operation Samudra Setu

  • Indian Navy has launched Operation Samudra Setu - meaning Sea Bridge, as a part of national effort to repatriate Indian citizens from overseas. Indian Naval Ships Jalashwa and Magar are presently enroute to Malè in Maldives to commence evacuation operations as part of Phase-1.
  • Indian Mission in Maldives is preparing a list of Indian nationals to be evacuated by Naval ships and will facilitate their embarkation after requisite medical screening.

Colonel, Major, 5 Others Killed in Handwara Terrorist Attack

  • In one of the deadliest operations for the security forces in the Valley, an Indian army colonel, a major and two soldiers, along with a Jammu and Kashmir Police sub-inspector, were killed in a counter-terrorist operation in Kashmir.
  • The 12-hour operation, which took place at Handwara in Kupwara district, also resulted in the killing of two terrorist.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and defence minister Rajnath Singh paid tributes to the martyrs.
