Lt. Gen. Manoj Pande Took over as the 15th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command

  • Lieutenant General Manoj Pande assumed charge as the 15th Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman & Nicobar Command (CLINICIAN) on 1 June 2020.
  • He replaced Lieutenant General Podali Shankar Rajeshwar PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC. Shankar Rajeshwar was the 14th CINCAN and retired from service on 31 May 2020.
  •  He had a good experience of 37 years of distinguished service. He has taken an active part in Operation Vijay and Parakram.

Missile park "Agneeprastha" to be set up at INS Kalinga

  • The foundation stone for a missile park "Agneeprastha" was laid at INS Kalinga, Naval base in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • The park "Agneeprastha"once completed will be dedicated to all the officers, sailors and support staff of INS Kalinga, who has served in this premier op-support Base of the ENC since its establishment in 1981.
  • The park also commemorates the award of the prestigious Unit Citation to INS Kalinga for 2018-19 and aims to capture glimpses of missile history of Kalinga since 1981 till date.
  • The park has been set up with a replica of missiles and ground support equipment (GSE) that showcase the evolution of missiles handled by the unit.
  • The exhibits have been created from scrap/obsolete inventory which have been reconditioned in-house.

DRDO's RCI Develops AI-based Attendance Application

  • The Research Centre Imarat (RCI), DRDO, here has developed a AI-based Attendance Application (AINA) which allows non-contact based personnel verification, using facial features of the person, in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic making it unsafe to use contact-based biometric verification for attendance marking systems.
  • AINA can be deployed with minimal upgradation to the legacy attendance infrastructure with RFID readers. AINA can be installed on a normal desktop computer with a GPU based display adapter.

India Helps Uganda to Set Up Military War Game Centre

  • Indian Association in Uganda, with help of the Indian Military training team, set up a military war game centre in Jinja district.
  • Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni inaugurated the war game centre conceptualised by Indian military team for Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF).
  • The wargame centre was comissioned at the Uganda Senior Command and Staff College in Kimaka in Jinja District.

IAF to Launch its Squadron Number-18 - Flying Bullets With a Fleet of LCA Tejas

  • The Indian Air Force is set to operationalize its squadron called the Number-18 - Flying Bullets with a fleet of the Light Combat Aircraft, LCA Tejas at its Sulur base near Coimbatore. It will be launched by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal R K S Bhadauria.
  • It will be the second Indian Air Force squadron to operate with the modern multi-role light fighter aircraft.
  • The No.18 Squadron was formed in 1965 and has the distinction of being the first to land and operate from Srinagar.
  • It has also produced a Param Veer Chakra awardee during the 1971 war with Pakistan. It has been revived on the 1st April this year at the Sulur base.

US Navy Successfully Tests a Laser Weapon That can Destroy Aircraft Mid-Flight

  • A US Navy warship has successfully tested a new high-energy laser weapon that can destroy aircraft mid-flight, the Navy's Pacific Fleet has announced.
  • Images and videos provided by the Navy show the amphibious transport dock ship USS Portland executing "the first system-level implementation of a high-energy class solid-state laser" to disable an aerial drone aircraft.
  • It did not give a specific location of the laser weapons system demonstrator (LWSD) test, saying only that it occurred in the Pacific on May 16, 2020.
  • Navy ships face an increasing number of threats in conducting their missions, including Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, armed small boats, and adversary intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance systems.

Defence Ministry Approves Procurement of 26 defence Items From Local Suppliers to Boost 'Make in ...

  • Ministry of Defence has approved procurement of 26 defence items only from local suppliers to boost Make in India.
  • The government has issued Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order 2017 to encourage Make in India and to promote manufacturing and production of goods and services in India.
  • Under this order, Department of Defence Production (DDP) has so far notified 127 items where purchase preference is given to local suppliers.
  • In order to further encourage procurement from local suppliers, 26 items out of 127 already notified, have now been notified under the related clause of the Public Procurement (Preference to Make in India) Order.

Indian Air Force Shelves Three Main Projects

  • On May 18, 2020, the Indian Air Force Chief RKS Bhadauria announced that it will shelve three main projects of worth Rs. 8,000 crores.
  • This is because the Central Government is pushing for Make in India.
  • The shelved project includes the plan to buy 20 additional Hawk Planes from the United Kingdom, 30 Jaguar fighter planes from the US and 38 trainer aircrafts.

GoI to Implements Shekatkar Committee Recommendations Related to Creating Border Infrastructure

  • Government has decided to implement three important recommendations of the Shekatkar Committee of Experts (CoE).
  • The CoE is headed by the Chairmanship of Lt General D B Shekatkar (Retd).
  • The recommendations are related to border Infrastructure like speeding up road construction, leading to socio-economic development in the border areas.
  • GoI has implemented the recommendation of CoE to outsource road construction work beyond the optimal capacity of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
