Shafiqur Rahman Barq, India's Oldest MP and Samajwadi Party Leader, Dies

India's oldest MP in Parliament, senior Samajwadi Party leader, and MP from Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal, Shafiqur Rahman Barq, died.
Born on July 11, 1930, Shafiqur Rehman Barq began his political career with former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. He also served as the coordinator of the Babri Masjid Action Committee and was known for amplifying the voice of the Muslim community across the country.
He also worked closely with Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav at the time of the party's formation.
Barq, who has been a four-time MLA, was elected MP from Sambhal for the fifth time in 2019. Barq won the Muradabad Lok Sabha seat three times (1996, 1998, and 2004) and the Sambhal Lok Sabha seat twice (2009 and 2019) from SP.

Renowned Filmmaker Kumar Shahani Passes Away

Acclaimed director Kumar Shahani passed away at the age of 83 in Kolkata.
Shahani, born in Larkana, Sindh (present-day Pakistan) in 1940, was a pioneering figure in Indian parallel cinema. He carved a distinct path with his thought-provoking and socially conscious films, earning him recognition as a leading voice in independent cinema.
Shahani's cinematic journey began at the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), where he honed his craft alongside notable filmmakers like Mani Kaul. His directorial debut, "Maya Darpan" (1972), based on a story by Nirmal Verma, established him as a filmmaker with a distinct vision.
Shahani's films were not just mere entertainment; they served as powerful commentaries on social realities, prompting introspection and challenging societal norms. His dedication to artistic expression and unwavering commitment to independent filmmaking earned him national and international recognition.

Music Maestro Pankaj Udhas Passes Away

Ghazal maestro Pankaj Udhas passed away in Mumbai after a prolonged illness at the age of 72.
Born in a musically inclined family in Gujarat, he initially wanted to learn tabla, his interest gradually moved to ghazals.

Manohar Joshi, Former Maharashtra CM, Dies

Former Lok Sabha Speaker and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi passed away at the age of 86.
Joshi served as Chief Minister from 1995 to 1999 and was the first leader from the undivided Shiv Sena to occupy the top post in the state. He was also elected as a Member of Parliament and was the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004 when the Vajpayee government was in power.
His political career began with his involvement in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and he later became a member of the Shiv Sena. In the 1980s, Joshi emerged as a key leader within the Shiv Sena, and was known for his organisational skills.

Rituraj Singh, a versatile actor passed away at the age of 59. Singh, whose career spanned over several decades, was revered for his dynamic performances across television, cinema, and web series.
Rituraj Singh's journey in the entertainment industry is marked by an array of memorable roles that showcased his acting prowess. He was an integral part of the television landscape, featuring in iconic shows such as "Banegi Apni Baat," "Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii," and "Kutumb." His role in "Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai" further solidified his standing as a household name, endearing him to audiences across the nation.

Eminent jurist Fali S. Nariman Passes Away

Eminent jurist and senior advocate of the Supreme Court Fali S. Nariman died at the age of 95.
Nariman started his law practice at the Bombay High Court.
When he was 38 years, below the minimum qualifying age, he declined an invitation to be a judge of the High Court.
He was a senior advocate of the Supreme Court since 1971 and had also served as President of the Bar Association of India from 1991 to 2010.
Nariman was a recipient of some of the country's highest civilian awards, including the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
