Dharmendra Pradhan Launches National Yoga Olympiad 2022

Suggesting the inclusion of Yoga as a part of the National Council of Educational Research and Training curriculum, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the National Yoga Olympiad 2022 and quiz competition in Delhi.
Yoga is India's gift to the world and it has gained tremendous popularity globally since the United Nations General Assembly adopted PM Modi's proposal to celebrate June 21 as International Day of Yoga.
Pradhan further mentioned that National Education Policy 2020 lays special emphasis on the physical and emotional well-being of both students and teachers. Sports-integrated learning will inculcate sportsman spirit and help students adopt fitness as a lifelong attitude.

NIOS to Provide an Opportunity for Further Education to Agniveers who are Just 10th Class Pass Out

National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is instituting a special programme in consultation with the Defence Authorities to provide opportunity for further education to those Agniveers who are just 10th class pass out.
Under this programme, these Agniveers can obtain a 12th class certificate by developing customized courses that are not only current but very relevant to their area of service.
This certificate is recognised for both employment and higher education purposes in the whole country. This will benefit the Agniveers to gain adequate educational qualification and skills to take up productive role in society later in life.
This special programme of NIOS will facilitate enrolment, development of courses, student support, provision of self-learning material, accreditation of study centres, personal contact programme, evaluation and certification.

College of Engineering Pune Ranks First in AICTE's Learning Assessment Survey

The College of Engineering Pune, an autonomous institute under the Maharashtra government, was ranked first in the AICTE's learning assessment survey, with 314 engineering undergraduates from the college scoring over 70% in the test. The second position went to the Jharkhand-based Birsa Institute of Technology, which saw 193 students achieve five-star ranking (given to those who scored over 70 per cent) on the test, followed by the NMAM Institute of Technology in Karnataka (166 students ranked five-star).
The survey, which revealed that first year engineering students are underperforming in maths compared to other core subjects, shows that undergrads from Tamil Nadu underwent the maximum number (24,499) assessments, while Goa had only three students signing up for it.

First Blind PhD Degree Holder from Rehabilitation University of India

Saurabh Rai, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher's Training and Non-Formal Education (IASE), Special Education (visual impairment), Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) earned the distinction of first blind PhD degree holder from the National Rehabilitations University, Lucknow.
Saurabh Rai's doctoral research is on 'Support Services for Students with Visually Challenged in Higher Education Institutions in Uttar Pradesh: An Exploratory Study'.
The work brings out the inadequacies that inform the support system created for specially-abled persons in society, more particularly in the context of the university system in Uttar Pradesh. It also makes recommendations for all-around improvement in the existing system.

Indian Students Leaving Ukraine will be Accepted by Russian Varsities

Indian students who had to leave studies midway as they fled the Russia-Ukraine conflict will be offered admission in Russian universities without them losing out on their previous academic years, Roman Babushkin, Deputy Chief of Mission of Russian Embassy in New Delhi, said.
Babushkin said that the students would be admitted to Russian universities where they can continue with their respective courses from where they were left off without losing out on the previous years of study.
The statement came in response to queries by reporters on the fate of the over 20,000 students who fled Ukraine after Russia invaded that country in February this year.

India's First COVID-19 Vaccine for Animals 'Anocovax'

Agriculture Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar launched the country's first homegrown COVID-19 vaccine "Anocovax" for animals, developed by Haryana-based ICAR-National Research Centre on Equines (NRC). Anocovax is an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 Delta (COVID-19) vaccine for animals. The immunity induced by Anocovax neutralises both Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2.
The COVID-19 vaccine for animals, Anocovax, is effective and capable of neutralising both Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2.
The Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar also launched 'CAN-CoV-2 ELISA kit', an antibody detection kit against SARS-CoV-2 for animals.
It is a sensitive and specific nucleocapsid protein-based indirect ELISA kit.
The antibody detection kit has also been indigenously developed in India and a patent has been filed for it.

'First Time in History': Cancer Vanishes for every Patient in Drug Trial

An Indian-origin patient was among those who had a "miracle" cure using a cancer medication that is being tried out by a research centre, achieving an unprecedented healing rate when all 14 patients in the trial had their cancers disappear.
In the trial at the Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Centre in New York using dostarlimab, "the rectal cancer disappeared after immunotherapy -- without the need for the standard treatments of radiation, surgery, or chemotherapy -- and the cancer has not returned in any of the patients, who have been cancer-free for up to two years.
According to researchers, this was the first time that all the patients in a cancer trial were completely healed with a medication and they did not have serious side-effects.
