Former TERI Chief R. K. Pachauri Passes Away

  • R. K. Pachauri, a former chief of The Energy and Resources Institute, passed away after a prolonged cardiac ailment. Pachauri was 79.
  • Pachauri was the chairman of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) between 2002 and 2015. The panel was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize during Pachauri's tenure in 2007.
  • In 2015, Pachauri was accused of allegedly sexually harassing a woman colleague after which he quit the post.

Leading Designer Wendell Rodricks Dies

  • Renowned fashion designer and activist Wendell Rodricks died at his home in Goa's Colvale village. He was 59.
  • A Padma Shri award-winning designer known for infusing modern aesthetics with traditional Goan influences, Rodricks was also an author, an environmentalist and a gay rights activist. He was among the first prominent Indians to come out as gay in the early 2000s. Rodricks handed over his designing label to his protege, Schulen Fernandes, a few years ago and chose to focus on the 'Moda Goa Museum', which was to be launched this year.

Atul Kumar Gupta New President of ICAI

  • The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) elected Atul Kumar Gupta as its new president.
  • Gupta was the vice-president.
  • The institute elected Nihar Niranjan Jambusaria as the new vice-president.
  • They have been elected for 2020-21.
  • Gupta joined the central council of the ICAI in 2013. He was in the council for two consecutive terms before getting elected as vice-president last year.

Writer Giriraj Kishore Passes Away

  • Veteran writer and academician Giriraj Kishore passed away at his residence following a prolonged illness. He was 82-years-old.
  • A Padma Shri awardee, Giriraj had written 'Pahla Girmitiya'. Through works like 'Dhaai Ghar' and 'Pahla Girmitiyaa', he had enriched the literature world. He was honoured with Sahitya Samman as well. Giriraj was born in Muzaffarnagar in 1937. His father was a 'zamindar' (landlord), but because of his socialist principles and lack of interest in the zamindari system, he left home at a young age and became a Gandhian.

RSS Ideologue Parameswaran Dies

  • Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologue P. Parameswaran died in Mayannur in Kerala's Palakkad district. A thinker, writer, orator and institution-builder, Paramaeswaran was also the recipient of the Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri awards, India's second and fourth highest civilian honours . He was 93 years old.
  • He was secretary of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor to the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1967 and vice- president in 1971, but moved away from politics. A freedom fighter, he spent 16 months in jail during Indira Gandhi's emergency rule in the 1970s.

Pranab Kumar Gogoi Passed Away

  • Former Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker and sitting Congress MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) Pranab kumar Gogoi, 84 years old passed away in Guwahati, Assam.
  • He was born on 19th August 1936 in Dibrugarh, Assam.
  • Pranab Kumar belongs to Indian National Congress (INC) party and was first elected as Legislator from the Assam Legislative Assembly from Sivasagar, Assam for 4 consecutive terms.
  • He also served as minister in the Tarun Gogoi-led cabinet from 2006-2011 and Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2011.
  • In 2015, Pranab Kumar took the definition of the term 'Assamese'.

Kirk Douglas, Hollywood Legend Dies

  • Actor Kirk Douglas, a fixture of cinema for six decades, has died aged 103.
  • The stage and screen actor was well-known for a range of roles, including the 1960 classic Spartacus, in which he played the titular character.
  • Born in New York in 1916, he rose to prominence during Hollywood's "golden age", earning his first Oscar nomination for the 1949 boxing story Champion.
  • He was also the father of Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas.
