Barry O'Farrell Australia's New High Commissioner to India

  • Australia appointed former NSW (New South Wales) premier Barry O'Farrell as the next High Commissioner to India. Barry O' Farrell will be the successor of Harinder Sidhu.
  • Barry O'Farrell served in the New South Wales (NSW) Parliament from 1995-2015, as the 43rd premier of the province, also has non-resident accreditation to Bhutan and as NSW special envoy for India & made a significant contribution as the Deputy Chair of the Australia- India Council Board.

V. L. Dutt Passes Away

  • V. L. Dutt, the executive chairman of KCP Group, died at his residence. He was 82.
  • The KCP Group, which boasts of a turnover of $250 million and has interests in cement, sugar and heavy industrial machinery, scaled new heights under his leadership.
  • In appreciation of his outstanding contribution to the areas of rural development, medical care, education and industry, he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by the Nagarjuna University, Andhra Pradesh, and became an Honorary Consul General of the Republic of Turkey in Chennai for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
  • He was also awarded the Medal of Friendship by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Mr. Tran Dai Quang, in 2017.

Tapas Pal, Former Trinamool Congress MP & Bengali Actor, Passes Away

  • Bengali actor & former Trinamool Congress MP (Member of Parliament) Tapas pal passed away at the age of 61 in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • He was born on 19th September 1958 in Chandannagar, West Bengal and completed his graduation from the Hooghly Mohsin College in Bio-Science.
  • Tapas Pal was a member of All India Trinamool Congress. He was an MLA from Alipore for 2 terms (2001-2006 & 2006-2009) and former MP (Member of Parliament) of Krishnanagar constituency from 2009 to 2019.
  • He became popular with his debut film Dadar Kirti (1980) and other films are Saheb (1981), Parabat Priya (1984), Bhalobasa Bhalobasa (1985) and Anurager Choyan (1986) etc.,
  • He was awarded Filmfare Award for his role in Saheb (1981).

Sushil Chandra Named in J&K Delimitation Panel

  • Chief election commission (CEC) nominated election Commissioner Sushil Chandra as his nominee to the proposed delimitation commission for Jammu and Kashmir.
  • CEC Sunil Arora nominated Chandra upon the request of legislative department of the law ministry to take forward the exercise of setting up the commission.
  • The proposed Delimitation Commission will redraw assembly constituencies in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.The commission is likely to be set up by the home ministry. Delimitation is the process of fixing limits or boundaries of territorial constituencies in a country or a province with a legislative body.

Radhakishan Damani Becomes India's 2nd Richest Person

  • According to Forbes 'Real Time Billionaires' Index, supermarket chain DMart's Founder Radhakishan Damani became India's 2nd richest person after Mukesh Ambani. Damani has a net worth of $17.8 billion.
  • DMart operates 196 stores in 72 cities across the country.

Nikita Pearl Waligwa Passes Away

  • Nikita Pearl, a Ugandan student who played a memorable role in a 2016 Disney film 'Queen of Katwe' about a local chess prodigy died at the age of 15.
  • The cause was a brain tumor, according to the girls' secondary school she had attended since 2018.
  • The 2016 film was based on the true story of Phiona Mutesi, who took up chess aged nine despite not being in school and went on to compete in international tournaments.

Vinay Dube Appointed as GoAir CEO

  • GoAir appointed Vinay Dube, the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Jet Airways, as its new CEO.
  • Mr. Dube will report to Chairman Nusli Wadia, Managing Director Jeh Wadia, and the board. He will be responsible for the management of the airline and also for meeting the goals and long-term growth objectives of the company.

Debasish Panda Appointed Finance Secretary

  • Senior IAS officer Debasish Panda was appointed as the new finance secretary as part of a top level bureaucratic reshuffle effected by the Centre.
  • Panda, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, is at present special secretary, department of financial services.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved his appointment as secretary, department of financial services, in place of Rajiv Kumar, who superannuates this month-end.

Rajiv Bansal Appointed Chairman and MD of Air India

  • Senior bureaucrat Rajiv Bansal was appointed as the Chairman and Managing Director of Air India for a second time, days after the government announced 100 per cent stake sale of the debt-ridden national carrier.
  • Bansal, a 1988-batch IAS officer of the Nagaland cadre is currently the additional secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his appointment as the CMD of Air India in the rank and pay of additional secretary.
  • He replaced Ashwani Lohani, who has completed his one-year tenure as the head of the airline.
