Chhattisgarh Government Launches Spandan Campaign

The Chhattisgarh government launched the Spandan Campaign to contain incidents of suicide and fratricide involving police personnel, and instructions were issued to senior officers to strictly adhere to guidelines in this regard.

Cabinet approves EGoS, Project Development Cells

The Cabinet has given its approval for setting up of an Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS) and Project Development Cells (PDCs) in Ministries/Departments of the Central Government for attracting investments in India.
This new mechanism will reinforce India's vision of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2024-2025. It aims to take advantage of these opportunities from the global economic situation, considering the Covid-19 crisis, to make India among the largest players in the global value chain.
The Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS) has the Cabinet Secretary as the Chairperson and Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry, and Internal Trade as the Member Convenor.

Govt Initiates Consultation Process for New Science, Technology and Innovation Policy

The government has initiated a consultation process for formulation of a new national Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (STIP 2020).
The Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India (Office of PSA) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST) have jointly initiated a decentralised, bottom-up and inclusive process for the formulation of the new policy.
The fifth S&T policy of the country is being formulated at a crucial juncture when India and the world are tackling the COVID-19 pandemic.

Centre Amends Essential Commodities Act

The government has taken three historic decisions in the field of agriculture during the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Under the proposed amendments, essentials like grains, oil, pulses, potatoes, onions have been excluded from the Essential Commodities Act.
Farmers are free from the clutches of Agriculture Producer Market Committee.
Farmers can now export or store these commodities as they wish.

Centre Launches Three New Schemes to Promote Electronics Manufacturing in India

To make India a global leader in electronic manufacturing, the government has announced three schemes worth of Rs 50,000 crore.
The new schemes - Production Linked Incentive Scheme, Component Manufacturing Scheme, and Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters Scheme - were implemented for the development of electronics manufacturing sector in India.
The triology of schemes that entail an outlay of about Rs 50,000 crore (approximately $7 billion), will help offset the disability for domestic electronics manufacturing, which will strengthen the electronics manufacturing ecosystem in the country.
The three schemes together will enable large scale electronics manufacturing, the domestic supply chain of components and state-of-the-art infrastructure and common facilities for large anchor units and their supply chain partners.
These schemes are expected to contribute significantly to achieving a $1 trillion digital economy and a $5 trillion GDP by 2025.
The three new schemes are expected to attract substantial investments, increase the production of mobile phones and their components to around Rs 10,00,000 crore by 2025 and generate around 5 lakh direct and 15 lakh indirect jobs.

GoI Launches PM SVANidhi Scheme

On June 1, 2020, Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri SVANidhi Scheme for street vendors. The Union cabinet has cleared the credit amount for the scheme as well.
The scheme is aimed at enabling the street vendors to resume their livelihoods that have been adversely affected due to COVID-19 lockdown.
Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry launched the scheme in pursuance of the announcement made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
The PM SVANidhi or PM Street Vendors Atmanirbhar Nidhi is a credit facility scheme that will help more than 50 lakh urban and rural street vendors.
The scheme will help the street vendors restart their livelihoods. Under the scheme, Rs 10,000 of credit is to be provided to street vendors restart their livelihoods.

Union Cabinet Approves Changes in Definition of MSMEs

The Narendra Modi government announced policy changes for the MSME sector as part of the Atmanirbhar Bharat package.
In the first Cabinet meeting in the second year of the Narendra Modi government, it approved changes to the definition of MSMEs.
According to the new definitions, MSMEs with an investment of Rs 1 cr and turnover of Rs 5 cr will be classified as micro-units.
Units with an investment of Rs 10 cr and turnover of Rs 50 cr will be classified as small units while those with an investment of Rs 50 cr and turnover of Rs 250 cr will be classified as medium units.
Moreover, exports will not be excluded from the turnover cap.

K-FON Project of Kerala to be Implemented by December 2020

The Kerala government has announced that its ambitious Kerala Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) project, envisaged to provide free internet access to the poor, would be rolled out by December 2020.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan informed the decision after a meeting with the heads of companies of the consortium executing the Rs 1,500 crore K-FON project.
The project is being implemented by Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited and Kerala State Electricity Board.
Optical fibre cables were being laid across the state using KSEB posts.

'One Sun One World One Grid' Initiative

India has come up with a 'One Sun One World One Grid' (OSOWOG) initiative to set up a framework for facilitating global cooperation in this regard aiming at building a global ecosystem of interconnected renewable energy resources that can be seamlessly shared.
The Union Ministry of New and Renewable energy (MNRE), through this initiative, plans to build global consensus about sharing solar resources among more than 140 countries of West Asia and South East Asia.
The global grid plan may also leverage the International Solar Alliance co-founded by India that has 67 countries as members.
It has become India's calling card on climate change and is increasingly being viewed as a foreign policy tool.
