Govt. Approves Plan for 60,000 Houses under PMAY across Five States

  • The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs approved project proposals for over 60,000 houses across five states, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Rajasthan, at the 58th meeting of Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban).
  • The total number of sanctioned houses under PMAY(U) now stand at 114.04 lakh, of which around 93.25 lakh have been grounded for construction and around 54.78 Lakh have been completed and delivered to the beneficiaries.

Scheme for Economic Empowerment of DNTs

  • Government launched a Scheme for Economic Empowerment for DNTs, SEED for the welfare of De-notified, Nomadic and semi-nomadic communities in New Delhi.
  • De-notified Tribes communities are the most neglected, marginalized and economically and socially deprived communities. Historically, these communities never had access to private land or home ownership and used forests and grazing lands as a mean for their livelihood and residential use.
  • Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar said that this scheme signifies Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Mantra of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas and Sabka Prayas in a true manner. Highlighting the various features of the scheme, he expressed confidence that, this scheme with free education opportunity, health insurance worth five lakh rupees under Ayushman Bharat, better facilities for livelihood and financial assistance for construction of houses, will prove to be a game changer towards empowering the De-notified Tribes communities.

Saubhagya Scheme: Rajasthan Tops Solar Electrification Scheme

  • Under the Saubhagya scheme, Rajasthan has the maximum number of households electrified through the solar-based standalone system. In hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir had nil beneficiaries under the initiative. Under the Saubhagya Scheme, 2.817 crore households were electrified up to March 31, 2021, including 4.16 lakh through solar-based standalone systems.
  • Under the Saubhagya scheme, as many as 1,23,682 households were electrified through the solar-based standalone system in Rajasthan, followed by Chhattisgarh (65,373), Uttar Pradesh (53,234), Assam (50,754), Bihar (39,100), Maharashtra (30,538), Odisha (13,735), Madhya Pradesh (12,651), Power Minister R. K. Singh told the Lok Sabha.
  • The Hon'ble Prime Minister launched the Saubhagya scheme on 25th September 2017 to achieve universal household electrification covering every village and every district in the country.

Department of Social Justice & Empowerment Launches SMILE Scheme

  • Department of Social Justice & Empowerment launched the "SMILE: Support for Marginalised Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise" scheme in New Delhi.
  • SMILE is a Central Sector scheme. It is designed for providing welfare measures to Transgender community and people engaged in begging.
  • The scheme comprises of two sub-schemes namely,
  • Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation for Welfare of Transgender Persons
  • Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation of persons engaged in the act of Begging.
  • SMILE scheme seeks to strengthens and expands the reach of Rights that give necessary legal protection and secured life to targeted group. It keeps in mind the social security required through multiple dimensions of identity, education, medical care, shelter, and occupational opportunities.

Gujarat Unveils New IT/ITeS Policy to Generate 1 Lakh Direct Jobs

  • Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel unveiled new "IT/ITES Policy 2022-27" which offers both capital and operational support to Information Technology (IT) firms making investments in Gujarat, and promises to generate one lakh direct jobs.
  • Having missed the IT bus twice in 1980s and 2000, Gujarat introduced a special employment generation incentive in the new policy to encourage IT and Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) firms for hiring local talent.
  • As per Bhupendra Patel, the new policy would take the state to "newer heights in IT sector" and will place Gujarat among top five performing states of India in IT sector.
  • The policy launched at a formal event at a club in GIFT City in Gandhinagar replaces the 2016-2021 policy that had set an ambitious target to increase exports up to USD two billion (Rs. 13,000 crore), IT turnover to USD 15 billion (Rs. 75,000 crore) and create 10 lakh direct jobs.

Parliamentary Committee Report on MGNREGA

  • Parliamentary Committee recommended to increase in guaranteed days of work from 100 to 150 under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), after observing that, MGNREGA is a last fall-back option for many people in rural areas.
  • Committee gave recommendations at a time, when job scheme has become a safety net for migrant workers who returned to their villages amid Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Furthermore, demand for work under this scheme reached an all-time high in financial year 2021-2022.
  • MGNREGA scheme needs to be revamped, considering the changing times and emerging challenges in light of Covid-19 pandemic. Thus, committee are of view that there is a need to further diversify the nature of works this scheme in such manner that could also propel number of guaranteed working days to at least 150 days.
