President of India Lays Foundation Stone for JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research 'VARUNA...

  •  The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, laid the foundation stone for the campus of JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research at Varuna Village, Mysuru.
  •  Global Campus of JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research at Varuna Village is a tribute to Sri Shivarathri Rajendra Mahaswamiji whose 104th Jayanti is being celebrated in 2019.
  • Sri Suttur Math's focus on education was strongly encouraged by Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji.

POSHAN Atlas

  •  In a bid to tackle malnutrition, government is developing an Atlas to map the crops and food grains grown in different regions of the country so that nutritious protein rich food in local areas can be promoted.
  • The ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) in association with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Deendayal Research Institute is developing a POSHAN atlas under POSHAN abhiyan, government's multi-ministerial convergence mission with the vision to ensure attainment of malnutrition free India by 2022.
  • The POSHAN atlas will map the crops and food grains grown in different regions of the country because the solution to tackling malnutrition lies in promoting regional cropping patterns and embracing local food that are rich in protein.

Mamata Banerjee Govt To Set Up Kanyashree University In West Bengal To 'Empower Girls'

  •  Aiming to empower girls, the West Bengal government has taken the initiative to set up a Kanyashree University in Nadia district and Kanyashree colleges across the state.
  • Banerjee had laid the foundation stone of the new university at Krishnagar in Nadia district in January, 2019. The Kanyashree university would be only for women.
  • Banerjee took to Twitter on International Day of the Girl Child to state that her government started the Kanyashree scheme to empower girls, and it has been allocated a budget of Rs 7,000 crore since its launch in 2013.
  • The main objective of the scheme is to ensure that girls study in schools and delay their marriages until the age of 18 years.

EY Launches Tech Platform In 45 Delhi-NCR Schools To Enable STEM Learning For Girls

  •  In a bid to address the gender gap in the technology sector, EY launched a mobile platform to provide an entertaining and gamified science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning experience to over 6,000 girls in Delhi-NCR.
  • The mobile platform developed in collaboration with Tribal Planet, EY STEM Tribe, will help girls in 13-18 years age group engage in STEM curriculum and pursue high-growth careers.
  • India is the first country to launch EY's STEM Tribe platform. Following the launch in India with Delhi-NCR, EY will take this to schools in the United States, starting with Seattle and Atlanta.
  • This global initiative in India will enable STEM learning for 6,000 girls across 45 private and government schools in Delhi-NCR, and has the potential to scale rapidly, empowering young girls to learn STEM in a pragmatic and contemporary manner, said Rajiv Memani, Chairman and Regional Managing Partner, EY India.

14 States To Lose Over ₹440 Crore For Not Meeting National Health Mission Norms

  •  Up to 14 States will pay dearly for not upgrading their health infrastructure in line with the demands of the National Health Mission being steered by the Ministry of Health.
  • They will lose a substantial 20 per cent chunk of the funding from the Centre, over ₹440 crore, that had been tied to certain conditions.
  • Bihar and Madhya Pradesh are among the bigger States to have suffered the most penalty. The hill states of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, the north eastern states of Nagaland, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, the Union Territories of J&K, Lakshadweep and Delhi, and Goa and West Bengal will collectively lose over ₹440 crore for not performing well on immunisation, and falling short on parameters such as upgrading district hospitals, running of primary health centres, screening for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among people over 30 years, availability of mental health services, and digitising human resources (HR).

Global Fund Raises $13.92 Billion To Fight Aids, TB, Malaria

  •  A conference of the Global Fund to fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria raised at least USD 13.92 billion for the next three years.
  • Macron, who hosts the international conference in the French city of Lyon, vowed to keep working to reach the USD 14 billion goal which the organization had set up from the USD 12.2 billion brought in during the last conference in 2016.

Saudi Arabia Allows Women To Serve In Armed Forces

  •   Saudi Arabia announced that it will allow women in the ultra-conservative kingdom to serve in the armed forces as it embarks on a broad programme of economic and social reforms.
  • The move is the latest in a series of measures aimed at increasing the rights of women in the kingdom, even as rights groups accuse Riyadh of cracking down on women activists.
  • Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the kingdom's de facto ruler, has approved a handful of reforms aimed at widening women's rights, including allowing them to drive and to travel abroad without consent from a male "guardian".

Singapore to Ban Ads for Sugary Drinks in Bid to Tackle Diabetes

  •  Singapore will become the first country in the world to ban ads for the most unhealthy sugary drinks in its latest move to combat rising diabetes rates.
  • Products deemed "less healthy" must now display labels grading their nutritional and sugar content, with those considered to be most unhealthy banned from appearing in ads across all media platforms, including broadcast, print and online channels.
  • This aims to reduce the influence of such advertisements on consumer preferences.
  • It added that the measures were only a start and it would continue to explore the possibility of a sugar tax or ban.

Health Ministry Launches WHO India Country Cooperation Strategy

  •  The Union Health Ministry has launched the 'World Health Organisation (WHO) India Country Cooperation Strategy (CCS) 2019–2023: A Time of Transition', with the collaboration providing a strategic roadmap for the WHO to work with the Indian government towards achieving its health sector goals; improving the health of its population; and bringing in transformative changes in the health sector.

India Hands Over 10,000 Vials Of Anti-Rabies Vaccines To Myanmar

  •   India has handed over 10,000 vials of anti-rabies vaccines to Myanmar in an effort to help the Naypyitaw in its fight against the Rabies disease.
  • In a handing over ceremony held in Yangon, the Deputy Chief of Mission Sumit Seth handed over the vials of Anti-Rabies Vaccines to Myanmar's Director General of Department of Medical Research Zaw Than Htun, Indian Embassy in Myanmar.
  • The aim of this goodwill donation was to provide support to the Government of Myanmar for its fight against Rabies and to showcase the strength of India's pharmaceutical industry in manufacturing high-quality vaccines at a highly competitive price.
  • The Director-General thanked New Delhi for its initiative and recalled the growing bilateral health cooperation between the two countries.

Govt Collaborates With IIM Bangalore To Launch Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship

  •  The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) announced its partnership with Indian Institute of Management (IIM)- Bangalore to launch a new programme 'Mahatma Gandhi National Fellowship'.
  • The two-year Fellowship programme will be delivered by IIMB's Centre of Public Policy (CPP), an independent public interest-oriented policy think-tank engaged in research, teaching, training, and capacity-building.
  • The programme will be launched on a pilot basis in Gujarat, Karnataka, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

NHA And Google Join Hands, Plans To Strengthen Ayushman Bharat Scheme

  •  The National Health Authority (NHA) and Google have joined to strengthen the implementation of Prime Minister Modi's scheme - Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). 
  • The NHA and Google will be exploring several cases to increase the efficiency of application processes. 
  • The collaboration is said to achieve PM Modi's goals to help the poor and improve their access to proper healthcare. 

HRD Minister Lays Stone For IIM Campus In Amritsar

  •  Union Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank laid the foundation stone of the campus of the Indian Institute of Management in Amritsar's Manawala.
  • IIM campus would come upon 60,000 square metres and have state-of-the-art facilities in the library, academic block and hostels.
  • The allocation of 350 crore rupees has been sanctioned for the first phase of the construction while an additional amount of 250 crore rupees would be allocated for the project.

AIIMS, Health Ministry Launch 'Edantseva' Website And App

  •  The All India Institute of Medical Sciences in collaboration with the Union Health Ministry launched the first-ever website and mobile application on oral health awareness.
  • The digital platform, 'e-DantSeva', contains information about the National Oral Health Programme, a detailed list of all the dental facility and colleges, Information, Education and Communication (IEC) material and a unique feature called the 'Symptom Checker'.
  • The website also provides GPRS route satellite images of the facility for easier access to the people.
