GMAT Aspirants Can Now Select Exam slots 6 Months in Advanced
Aspirants of Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), administered by the Graduation Management Admission Council (GMAC), will now be able to schedule online exam appointments up to 6 months in advance.
The test now also has the provision to select the exam section order and candidates can view unofficial score immediately. Applicants will have to demonstrate their writing and critical thinking skills with the addition of the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section. They will have the option to take advantage of two eight-minute-long breaks to prepare themselves for the next section of the exam.
Indian citizens can now also use their Aadhaar Card as valid identity proof during the GMAT online registration process. While passport remains the only acceptable identity proof for taking the exam at a test centre, Aadhaar Card has been introduced as an alternative for only online GMAT exams.
Ex-CEA Arvind Subramanian to Join Brown University as Senior Fellow
Former chief economic adviser Arvind Subramanian, who had resigned as a professor at Ashoka University in March this year (2021), will join Brown University's Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs as a senior fellow on July 1.
Subramanian, an eminent economist, had joined the Ashoka University as a professor in the Department of Economics in July 2020 and put in his papers on March 18 this year. His resignation came soon after political commentator Pratap Bhanu Mehta left the Sonipat, Haryana-based university.

Gujarat to Grant Centre of Excellence Status 7 Universities
Gujarat government is all set to grant Centre of Excellence (CoE) status to seven private universities in state.
In-principal approval was given by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. University Grants Commission (UGC) encourages higher education institutions to attain excellence in specific areas of academic as well as research work. CoE can an institute of strategic or security-relate importance, notified by state government. Institution of Eminence can also be given CoE tag.
The seven Universities are: CEPT University, Nirma University, Pandit Deendayal Energy University, Ahmedabad University, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DAIICT), Marwadi University and Charotar University of Science & Technology.
CoE tag to universities will help in bringing quality education and give them an international touch. Tag will also boost research, innovation and establish a culture of creating start- ups.

IIT-Ropar Develops 'AmbiTAG' India's First Indigenous Temperature Data Logger
Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar (IIT Ropar) in Punjab has developed a first-of-its-kind IoT device, "AmbiTag" that records real-time ambient temperature during the transportation of perishable products, vaccines and even body organs and blood. That recorded temperature further helps to know whether that particular item transported from anywhere in the world is still usable or perished because of temperature variation. This information is particularly critical for vaccines including the Covid-19 vaccine, organs and blood transportation.
Shaped like a USB device, AmbiTag continuously records the temperature of its immediate surroundings from -40 to +80 degrees in any time zone for a full 90 days on a single charge.
Most of the similar devices available in the international market record data only for a duration of 30- 60 days.
The recorded data can be retrieved by connecting the USB with any computer. The device has been developed under Technology Innovation Hub – AWaDH (Agriculture and Water Technology Development Hub) and its Startup ScratchNest. AWaDH is a Govt of India project.

Syed Akbaruddin Joins Kautilya School of Public Policy as Dean
Syed Akbaruddin, former permanent representative of India to the United Nations, joined the Kautilya School of Public Policy as its dean.
The public policy institute said that his appointment is a testimony to its commitment to provide students an exposure to the best minds from the policy fraternity.
Akbaruddin, who joined the foreign service in 1985, was the Ministry of External Affair's spokesperson between 2012 and 2015 and he retired last April as India's permanent representative to the United Nations.
CBSE, ISC Class 12 Board Exams Cancelled this Year
The union government announced the cancellation of CBSE Board exams for Class 12 in view of the prevailing coronavirus situation. The decision was taken at a high-level review meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Hours after the development, Indian School Certificate (ISC) board exams for Class 12 too have been cancelled.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) had on April 14 announced cancellation of class 10 exams and postponement of class 12 exams in view of the surge in coronavirus cases.
The final decision on compiling results is yet to be taken.
Class 12 results will be made as per a well-defined objective criterion in a time-bound manner.

IIT-Delhi Launches BTech in Energy Engineering
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi will soon launch a new department of energy science and engineering for expanding the scope and depth of activities being undertaken by the 45-year-old Centre for Energy Studies (CES). The CES will be converted into the Department of Energy Science and Engineering.
Besides continuing with three existing MTech programmes (including one sponsored by the International Solar Alliance for working fellows from different countries) presently being offered by the Centre for Energy Studies, the new department would offer an undergraduate degree programme, i.e. BTech in Energy Engineering starting from the academic session 2021-2022 with an intake of 40 students qualifying JEE (Advanced).

IIT-Madras Collaborates with IBM for Research in Quantum Computing
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has collaborated with IBM on quantum computing education and research. The institute's faculty, researchers, and students will get access to IBM's quantum systems and tools over IBM Cloud to accelerate joint research in quantum computing, and develop curricula.
The Quantum Computing Lab at IIT Madras will host courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Quantum Computing Lab courses jointly taught by IIT Madras faculty and IBM researchers will include hands-on lab sessions on the IBM quantum systems and will augment existing courses on quantum information and computing. IBM will provide the learning resources, tools, and systems access needed by the faculty and students.
Quantum computing is fast emerging as one of the disruptive technologies of our times. This collaboration with IIT Madras is part of the IBM Quantum Educators program that helps teachers in the quantum field connect with one another and provide learning resources, tools and systems access they need to provide quality educational experiences.
J&K to Provide Pension, Scholarship under 'Saksham' Scheme
The Administrative Council (AC), which met under the chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha in Jammu has approved the grant of financial relief through the Special Assistance Scheme for Covid Moralities (SASCM/Saksham) to the families of Covid victims. The scheme aims to ensure the sustenance of families who have lost their sole breadwinner.
Under the new scheme Saksham, the surviving spouse, and one eldest surviving member of affected families will receive a special monthly pension of Rs. 1000 through direct bank transfer (DBT), provided that they are not otherwise receiving any pension under other schemes.
Additionally, the scheme will also provide special scholarships to children who lost their earning parent(s)/ sibling(s)/ guardian(s) to Covid. The special scholarship will be paid annually at the rate of Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 40,000 through DBT to children studying up to 12th standard, and higher education, respectively.
Pune University Signs MoU with AFMC for Health Research
Pitching in to support the COVID 19 pandemic relief work, the administration at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune to prioritise research in the field of healthcare. The two institutions will conduct faculty exchange, joint research projects, provide internships and hands-on learning to students and come up with solutions for challenges faced by the public health sector.
Earlier SPPU had signed a similar MoU with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences as a part of the same effort.
