Weyan Village in Bandipora, India's First to Inoculate all Adults

  • Weyan, a village in district Bandipora (J&K) has become the first village in the country, where the entire population above 18 years has been vaccinated. The vaccination in Weyan village was covered under the J&K model, a 10-point strategy to inoculate everyone who is eligible for the shots at a faster pace.
  • The Union territory also achieved 70 per cent vaccination for those in the 45+ age group despite the initial vaccine hesitancy, almost double the national average. The village is located only 28 kilometres away from Bandipora district headquarters, but a distance of 18 kilometres has to be covered by foot as there is no motorable road.

IIT Ropar Develops Nation's First Power-free CPAP Device 'Jivan Vayu'

  • Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar has developed a device 'Jivan Vayu' which can be used as a substitute of CPAP machine. This is the nation's first such device which functions even without electricity and is adapted to both kinds of oxygen generation units like O2 cylinders and oxygen pipelines in hospitals. These provisions are not available in otherwise existing CPAP machines.
  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a treatment method for patients having breathing problems during sleep called sleep apnea. The machine uses mild air pressure to keep the airways open for easy breathing. It is also used to treat infants whose lungs have not fully developed. The machine blows air into the baby's nose to help inflate his or her lungs. The treatment is all the more necessary during early stages of the Covid-19 infection. It reduces lung damage and allow patients to recover from the inflammatory effects.

Amazon India Announces Machine Learning Programme

  • Amazon India announced the launch of an integrated learning programme for students to learn applied Machine Learning (ML) skills, making them industry ready for careers in the new technology.
  • The programme, ML Summer School, has been introduced to help train students in ML and address the growing demand for talent with this skill set across various industries.
  • The curriculum of ML Summer School will cover the fundamental concepts in ML while linking them to practical industry applications through an immersive 3-day course.
  • Students will get to learn first-hand on how advanced ML techniques such as Deep Learning and Probabilistic Graphical Models can be leveraged to solve specific business problems in the e-commerce domain such as demand forecasting, catalogue quality, product recommendations, search ranking and online advertising.

'Namaste Yoga' Mobile App Launched

  • 'Namaste Yoga' a mobile application was launched in the curtain raiser event for the 7th International Day of Yoga. The event was organised by the Ministry of Ayush in association with the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said that yoga is a way to a healthy and happy life and the government strives to promote Yoga among all sections of society. Talking about the 'Namaste Yoga'mobile application, Ayush Minister Kiren Rijiju said that it has been designed as an information platform for the public.
  • Ayush Ministry said that it aims to raise awareness about yoga and make it accessible for the larger community. Ayush Ministry said that the event also marked the beginning of a 10-episode series on various aspects of Common Yoga Protocol which would be telecast on DD India. The series has been produced by Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga.

All India Survey on Higher Education 2019-2020

  • Ministry of Education has released latest edition of "All India Survey on Higher Education" (AISHE) 2019-2020. As per the survey, number of institutions of national importance has increased to 135 which accounts for 80 percent in last five years.
  • According to survey, number of institutions of national importance has increased to 135 in 2020 from 75 in 2015.
  • Gender parity Index has also improved.
  • Number of PhDs has increased by 60 per cent since 2015. Number of students pursuing PhD in 2019-20 was 2.03 lakh while in 2014-15 it was 1.17 lakh.
  • Number of teachers stands at 15,03,156. Out of them, 57.5 percent are male while 42.5 percent are female.
  • Total enrolment in higher education is 3.85 crore in 2019-20, which was 3.74 crore in 2018-19 & 3.42 crore in 2014-15.
  • AISHE report is published by Ministry of Education since 2010-11. Survey provides key performance indicators on current status of higher education in India. Data is collected on parameters like number of teachers, student enrolment, examination results, programmes, education finance and infrastructure.

IIT-Delhi to Offer MTech Course in Electric Mobility from this Year

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi will start a new postgraduate (PG) programme in electric mobility from the academic session 2021-22. The MTech course in electric mobility will be offered by the institute's Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART).
  • The programme will cover key aspects related to electric vehicles, drivetrain, chargers and charging infrastructure, battery energy storage systems, battery management system, reusability of energy storage elements, reliability, automotive health monitoring, automotive NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness), vehicle dynamics, autonomous and connected vehicles, vehicular telematics, and materials for an electric vehicle, along with hands-on practice and design in laboratories.

  • Edtech start-up Masai School has acquired Bengaluru-based design institute Design Shift Academy to strengthen its existing curriculum by introducing comprehensive courseware on UI & UX Design, and Product Management. The acquisition takes the firm from a coding-centric to a career-focused learning platform. The start-up had recently closed its $5 million Series-A funding round in March.
  • Founded in 2019, Masai School's vision is to be able to help young professionals launch their careers in a field of their choice, irrespective of what background they come from. Through the Income Share Agreement (ISA) model, the company is continues its efforts towards democratising access to quality education.
  • Design Shift Academy was established in 2017 by Preeti Sheokand and Sudhir Mor, both UX designers. Offering weekend skilling courses, this boot strapped company started as a home based business but today has a market across India, Turkey and Australia.

Indian School of Business Inks Partnership with University of Sydney Business School

  • The Indian School of Business (ISB) and the University of Sydney Business School (USBS) have entered a five-year partnership, which is one of the most comprehensive of its kind.
  • These two world-class business schools have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to promote research collaboration, academic exchange, and student mobility.
  • Cooperation between the two schools will be explored in academic research, doctoral research, coursework education, corporate engagement, and contributing to policy development in and for a post-COVID world.
  • ISB's comprehensive partnership with University of Sydney Business School will usher in new insights based on multidisciplinary research that will contribute to management thought leadership and in designing new trajectories in management education globally.
  • The partnership is ISB's first comprehensive partnership with an Australian School in the business and management field.
