Statue of Unity Beats Statue of Liberty
In just over a year of its unveiling, the Statue of Unity surpassed the footfall at the 133-year-old Statue of Liberty in the US, with an average of over 15,000 tourists visiting the monument in Gujarat daily.
With 74% increase over the daily average of the first year, that is, November 1, 2018 to October 31, 2019 the daily average of 15,036 is now registered in the first month of this second year. This has further increased to 22,430 on weekend days. The Statue of Liberty of New York, United States, attracts around 10,000 visitors a day.

Union Cabinet Approves Land Monetisation at Pragati Maidan to Build a Five-star Hotel
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the plan and authorised India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) to transfer 3.7 acres of land at Pragati Maidan on a 99-year fixed leasehold basis at a price of INR 611 crore in favour of the SPV, which will be formed by India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) for development and operation of a five-star hotel.
The implementation of the International Exhibition and Convention Centre (IECC) project is in full swing and is scheduled to be completed in the year 2020-21.
In order to ensure completion of the hotel project at Pragati Maidan in a fast track mode, the SPV will take necessary steps including selecting a suitable developer and operator third party through a transparent competitive bidding process to construct, run and manage (directly or through a professional brand) the hotel on a long-term fixed lease basis.

Jyoti Mayal Is The New President Of TAAI
Jyoti Mayal, Director, New Airways Travels and erstwhile Hony Secretary of Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) has been elected as the President for TAAI for 2019-21.
Mayal, with her team, made a clean sweep in the election by winning all seats for the TAAI Executive and Managing Committees.
Interestingly, Jay Bhatia has been elected unopposed as Vice President of TAAI. While Lokesh Bettaiah is elected as Hony. Secretary, Shreeram Patel bagged the post of Hony. Treasurer.
The entire Managing Committee – Anoop Kanuga (Mumbai), Rajan Sehgal (Delhi), P Murugesan (Chennai), Devesh Agarwal (Kolkata), Paras Lakhia (Ahmedabad), Sunil Notani (Bhopal), and R Venkatachalam (Trichy) – from Mayal's team got elected for 2019-21.

ITM 2019 Focuses On Sustainable Tourism
The 8th International Tourism Mart (ITM) – 2019 held at Imphal in November 2019 witnessed the participation of 34 foreign delegates from over 19 countries along with 49 domestic delegates representing the travel industry.
After the presentations, a panel discussion was moderated by the Rupinder Brar, Addl. Director General, Ministry of Tourism, Government of India wherein eminent panelists comprising of Chetan Gupta, representing Association of Domestic Tour Operators of India, Arjit Purkayastha, a leading Tour Operator of the North East Region and Swadesh Kumar, President, Adventure Tour Operators Association of India deliberated on "Sustainable Tourism as an engine for Economic Growth and Employment".

Special Developments for Kurukshetra to Put it on World Map
Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar announced that Kurukshetra will be developed as an international tourist destination. As per reports, the state government will give plots, measuring 1500 sq m to 2000 sq m, at discounted prices to states intent on building bhawans or rest houses for pilgrims coming to the ancient, pilgrimage city.
The Centre approved INR 9734.70 lakhs under the Krishana Circuit Phase I for developing tourism infrastructure at sites related to Mahabharata era in Kurukshetra. In addition, 12 sites have been included for approval under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme with an approximate project cost of INR 9706 lakhs.
The CM also added that a Bharat Mata Temple would be made in an area of five acres in Kurukshetra at a site between Jyotisar and Brahma Sarovar.
