Tamil writer C. S. Lakshmi Receives Tata Literature Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023

Eminent author C. S. Lakshmi, (publishing fiction under her pseudonym Ambai) was awarded the Tata Literature Live! Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023. One of India's leading writers and academicians, Lakshmi pioneered the writing that supported the idea of educating women in India. She is credited with transforming Tamil fiction, especially the short story genre, imaginatively experimenting with both form and language.
Born in Coimbatore in 1944, Lakshmi earned post graduate degree in Arts from Madras Universities. She later recived PhD degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Lakshmi is also a co-founder of SPARROW (Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women), which is touted to be India's first archive dedicated to only women offering a range of writings, and visual and oral records.
Past recipients of the Tata Literature Live! Lifetime Achievement Award include Mahesh Elkunchwar, Anita Desai, Ruskin Bond, Shanta Gokhale, Mark Tully, Girish Karnad, Amitav Ghosh, Kiran Nagarkar, M. T. Vasudevan Nair, Khushwant Singh, V. S. Naipaul, Mahashweta Devi.

Nobel Prize in Literature 2023 Goes to Norwegian Author Jon Fosse

Norwegian author and dramatist Jon Fosse won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable," the award-giving body said.
Born in 1959 in Haugesund on Norway's west coast, Fosse is best known for his dramas, though his writing spans poetry, essays, children's books and translations.
The prize is regarded widely as the world's most prestigious literary award. The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded 116 times to 120 Nobel laureates between 1901 and 2023.
Fosse is the fourth Norwegian and the first since 1928 to win the Nobel Prize for literature.

Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023 was awarded to Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots.
Independently of each other, Ekimov and Brus succeeded in creating quantum dots, and Bawendi revolutionised the chemical production.
Quantum dots now illuminate computer monitors and television screens based on QLED technology. They also add nuance to the light of some LED lamps, and biochemists and doctors use them to map biological tissue.

Ruixiang Zhang Recipient of 2023 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize in Mathematics

Mathematician Ruixiang Zhang, an Assistant Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, USA, was named the recipient of the prestigious 2023 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize. This award recognized his remarkable contributions to the field of mathematics. The prize, which includes a cash award of $10,000, will be presented during an international conference in Number Theory, held in the hometown of the renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, at SASTRA University in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu during the third week of December.

Nobel Prize 2023 in Physics

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L'Huillier, for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter.
The three Nobel Laureates in Physics 2023 were recognised for their experiments, which have given humanity new tools for exploring the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules.
Pierre Agostini (Professor, The Ohio State University, Columbus, USA), Ferenc Krausz (Director at Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, Garching and Professor at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany), and Anne L'Huillier (Professor at Lund University, Sweden) demonstrated a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes in which electrons move or change energy.

Sudha Murty, the First Woman to Get Global Indian Award

Sudha Murty, renowned author, philanthropist and wife of Infosys co-founder N. R. Narayana Murty, was conferred with the Global Indian Award by the Canada India Foundation.
She was conferred by Canada India Foundation at Toronto.
The Global Indian Award, which is worth $50, 000, is given each year to a prominent Indian who has made a major mark in his or her chosen field.
Sudha Murty's exceptional contributions to literature, philanthropy and her dedication to giving back to society made her a fitting recipient for this esteemed award. She has spent her entire career paving the way for future generations, inspiring them to excel in their chosen paths.

West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh Teachers Nominated for Global Teacher Prize 2023

In a remarkable achievement, two Indian educators, Deep Narayan Nayak, a primary school teacher from West Bengal, and Hari Krishna Patacharu, an English teacher from Andhra Pradesh, made it to the top 50 shortlist for the 2023 Global Teacher Prize. The prestigious award celebrates educators from around the world, with the winner being chosen from the top 10 finalists.
The Global Teacher Prize, a USD 1-million annual award, is organised by the Varkey Foundation in partnership with UNESCO and in collaboration with the UAE-based philanthropic organisation Dubai Cares. This esteemed recognition aims to acknowledge educators who have displayed extraordinary dedication and innovation in their teaching practices.

Nobel Prize 2023 in Medicine Goes to Katalin Kariko, Drew Weissman for mRNA Covid Vaccines

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2023 was awarded to Katalin Kariko, and Drew Weissman for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA vaccines against Covid-19.
Through their groundbreaking findings, which have fundamentally changed understanding of how mRNA interacts with our immune system, the laureates contributed to the unprecedented rate of vaccine development during one of the greatest threats to human health in modern times.
