Hollywood Actor Michael Douglas to be Given Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award

Hollywood actor and producer Michael Douglas will be presented with the Satyajit Ray Excellence in Film Lifetime Award at the 54th International Film Festival Goa, in November 2023 Union minister of information and broadcasting Anurag Thakur announced.
Michael Douglas began his Hollywood career in 1966 and acted in more than 63 movies, winning the Academy Award for 'Best Actor' for the 1987 drama 'Wall Street'.
He received an American Film Institute Lifetime Award in 2009 and has won and been nominated for several BAFTAs, Golden Globe Awards and Emmy Awards.
Previous winners of the Satyajit Ray Excellence in Film Lifetime Award include Martin Scorcese, Wong Kar-wai, Lata Mangeshkar and Dilip Kumar.

Sivasankari Honoured With Saraswati Samman

Noted author and activist Sivasankari was honoured with the prestigious Saraswati Samman for the year 2022 for her memoir written in Tamil, Surya Vamsam, at the National Museum in Delhi.
The Saraswati Samman, instituted by the KK Birla Foundation in 1991, carries a plaque, a citation, and a cash prize of Rs. 15 lakh. Sivasankari is the 32nd recipient of the award, joining a pantheon of writers over the years. The selection follows a rigorous three-tier process leading up to a final decision by Chayan Parishad currently headed by former Supreme Court judge, justice Arjan Kumar Sikri.

Claudia Goldin Wins Nobel Prize in Economics

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to US labour economist Claudia Goldin, a professor at Harvard University, for having advanced our understanding of women's labour market outcomes. Goldin is only the third woman to win the prize.

Iranian Activist Narges Mohammadi Wins Nobel Peace Prize

Imprisoned Iranian women's rights advocate Narges Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize in a rebuke to Tehran's theocratic leaders and boost for anti-government protesters, prompting the Islamic Republic's condemnation.
The award-making committee said that the prize honoured those behind recent unprecedented demonstrations in Iran and called for the release of Mohammadi who has campaigned for three decades for women's rights and abolition of the death penalty.

Prof. Joyeeta Gupta Receives Spinoza Prize in Field of climate CHANGE

Indian-origin professor Joyeeta Gupta received the Spinoza Prize, the highest distinction in Dutch science, at a ceremony in the Netherlands for her work in the field of climate change.
The Professor of Environment and Development in the Global South at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) was conferred with the prize by the Netherlands' Minister for Education, Science and Culture Robert Dijkgraaf at The Hague.
The Dutch Research Council (NWO) bestows the Spinoza Prize, which includes a grant of 1.5 million euros. The NWO selection committee was highly impressed by the far-reaching and interdisciplinary nature of Gupta's research. Her work was acknowledged as "incredibly broad and interdisciplinary," highlighting its substantial scientific impact. The Spinoza Prize, presented annually since 1995, has been awarded to exceptional scholars across various fields of research.

Tamil writer C. S. Lakshmi Receives Tata Literature Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023

Eminent author C. S. Lakshmi, (publishing fiction under her pseudonym Ambai) was awarded the Tata Literature Live! Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023. One of India's leading writers and academicians, Lakshmi pioneered the writing that supported the idea of educating women in India. She is credited with transforming Tamil fiction, especially the short story genre, imaginatively experimenting with both form and language.
Born in Coimbatore in 1944, Lakshmi earned post graduate degree in Arts from Madras Universities. She later recived PhD degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Lakshmi is also a co-founder of SPARROW (Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women), which is touted to be India's first archive dedicated to only women offering a range of writings, and visual and oral records.
Past recipients of the Tata Literature Live! Lifetime Achievement Award include Mahesh Elkunchwar, Anita Desai, Ruskin Bond, Shanta Gokhale, Mark Tully, Girish Karnad, Amitav Ghosh, Kiran Nagarkar, M. T. Vasudevan Nair, Khushwant Singh, V. S. Naipaul, Mahashweta Devi.
