Shabana Azmi's Mother Shaukat Kaifi Dies

Veteran theatre and film actor Shaukat Kaifi passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest at her Mumbai residence. The 93-year-old had been unwell for a while due to age-related illnesses. She is survived by her children -- actor Shabana Azmi and cinematographer Baba Azmi.
The thespian was married to renowned Urdu poet and lyricist Kaifi Azmi who passed away in the year 2002. Shaukat had also penned a memoir titled Kaifi and I.

Former Madhya Pradesh CM and BJP Stalwart Kailash Joshi Dies

The first non-Congress chief minister in Madhya Pradesh in the post-Emergency era and veteran BJP leader Kailash Chandra Joshi died on Sunday at a private hospital in Bhopal after a prolonged illness at the age of 90.
Joshi who was a founding member of the BJP in Madhya Pradesh, had been an MLA for eight terms from 1962 to 1998 and leader Opposition in the state assembly twice - 1972-1977 and 1985-90, the state BJP media cell.
Called as 'sant purush' (a saintly leader) in the party by workers and leaders and known for his integrity and simplicity Joshi came from a humble background from Dewas district. With his leadership skills he rose in stature in Bharatiya Jansangh and later Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

ECI appoints Sh M K Das as Special Police Observer for Jharkhand Assembly Elections

Election Commission of India has appointed Sh Mrinal Kanti Das (IPS 1977 Retd) as Special Police Observer for the ensuing Elections to the State Legislative Assembly of Jharkhand 2019.
The Election Commission took the decision in light of the specific challenges of Left Wing Extremism affecting the Law and Order situation in Jharkhand.
Sh M K Das reached Ranchi to take up his new responsibility and oversee the deployment and other security related issues there.
It may be recalled that Sh Das retired as Director General of Manipur Police and was also deputed earlier as Special Observer for Tripura and Mizoram during the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.

Devendra Fadnavis takes Oath as Maharashtra CM

BJP's Devendra Fadnavis was sworn in as Maharashtra chief minister and NCP's Ajit Pawar as his deputy in an early morning political strike that stunned the Shiv Sena and Congress.
This came only hours after the Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress went through the final motions of forming a new coalition government, with NCP chief Sharad Pawar saying there was "unanimity" over Uddhav Thackeray as chief minister.
Sharad Pawar later clarified that his nephew had acted on his own against the party's decision, and reports said Ajit was removed as the leader of NCP's legislative party.

Anita Anand first Hindu to be appointed cabinet minister in Canada

As Canada's prime minister Justin Trudeau unveiled his new cabinet, it featured newcomer Anita Indira Anand, making her the first Hindu to be a federal minister in the country.
The cabinet includes three other Indo-Canadian ministers, all Sikhs, and each of whom was a member of the previous government.
Anand, who was elected to the House of Commons for the first time in the October 2019 federal elections, was named the minister of public services and procurement.
Anand emerged victorious from the riding of Oakville in Ontario, which in itself was historic as she was the first-ever Hindu woman to be elected to Parliament.
A professor of law at the University of Toronto, Anand was born in the town of Kentville in the province of Nova Scotia.
Anand is one of the seven newcomers to the cabinet for the new Trudeau government.
Harjit Sajjan retains his position as minister of national defence, while Navdeep Bains will be the minister of innovation, science and industry. The fourth Indo-Canadian minister from 2015 was Amarjeet Sohi, but after his defeat in the 2019 election, he does not return to the cabinet.

Senior Journalist Nilkanth Khadilkar Passes away at 85

Senior journalist Nilkanth Khadilkar died after a brief illness.
Nilkanth Khadilkar, 85, was the editor of Marathi newspaper Navakal, died at a private hospital in suburban Bandra.
He was the editor of the newspaper for 27 years and had gained popularity for his hard-hitting editorials which became the daily's popular feature.
Nilkanth Khadilkar was also author of a few books, including "Practical Socialism: musings from a tour of Russia".

1986 Batch IPS Officer Abhay Named New DGP Of Odisha

Odisha Government appointed 1986 batch IPS officer Abhay as the new Director General of Police (DGP) and head of police force.
Abhay, on Central deputation, is serving as the Director of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
The decision came after Union Public Service Commission recommended a panel of three names, which included In-charge DGP Bijay Kumar Sharma and 1986 batch officer Pradip Kapur apart from Abhay. Sharma, DG Fire Services, has now been transferred and posted as Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Home Department.

Satya Nadella Tops Fortune's Businessperson of the Year list

Microsoft's India-born Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella has occupied the top spot in Fortune's Businessperson of the Year 2019 list, an annual compilation that also includes Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga and Arista head Jayshree Ullal.
Fortune's annual Businessperson of the Year list features 20 business leaders "who tackled audacious goals, overcame impossible odds, found creative solutions".
The list is topped by Nadella, who has been at the helm of the technology giant since 2014.
Banga is ranked 8th, while Ullal comes in at the 18th spot in the list for which Fortune looked at 10 financial factors ranging from total return to shareholders to return on capital. Both Banga and Ullal are of Indian-origin.

'84 batch IAS officer R Rajagopal is Tamil Nadu's new CIC

R Rajagopal, who has been serving as Secretary to Governor for nearly two years, was appointed as the new State Chief Information Commissioner.
He will hold the office for three years. As the head of the State Information Commission, he will play an important role in the implementation of the Right to Information Act in the State.
The appointment was made based on the recommendation of the selection committee chaired by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.
Opposition leader MK Stalin, who is also a member of the selection committee, boycotted the meeting.
He alleged that the process lacks transparency and he was not provided with the details of the candidates under consideration.

Justice R Banumathi To Become Part Of SC Collegium

The Supreme Court collegium, which comprises five senior-most judges, will now have Justice R Banumathi as a new member after Justice Ranjan Gogoi demitted office as the CJI.
Justice Banumathi will be the second-ever woman to be part of the collegium after Justice Ruma Pal in the last 13 years.
Justice Pal was the last woman judge who was a member of the collegium before demitting office in 2006.
The apex court collegium comprises the five senior-most judges as its members to select and recommend names for the appointment of judges in the Supreme Court.
The collegium which recommends names of persons for appointment of judges in the high courts comprises three senior most apex court judges as its members.
