"Amrit Samagam" Conference of Tourism and Culture Ministers

  • The Amrit Samagam, a summit of the country's cultural and tourism ministers was launched by Union Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah. This summit was launched in New Delhi.
  • This is a two-day conference that was hosted by the Ministry of Culture as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM).
  • The topics of discussion at this conference included landmark initiatives of AKAM like Swatantra Swar, Har Ghar Jhanda, Digital District Repository, and Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar.
  • Also, in this conference, the Ministry of Tourism focused on the significant contributions made by the organization to the AKAM campaign.
  • The Utsav Portal website was launched by G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Tourism, Culture, and DONER during this conference. It is a Ministry of Tourism's digital initiative that will be used to showcase all festivals, events, and live darshans across the country with the aim of promoting different regions of India as popular tourist destinations across the world.

Ahmedabad Airport Re-carpets 3.5 km Runway in 75 Days, Claims Record

  • The Adani Group-managed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA) at Ahmedabad announced completing re-carpeting--a work to resurface roads with fresh asphalt--the 3.5-kilometre-long runway in 75 days. The group said that an asphalt equivalent to 200 km stretch of road was used for re-carpeting along with concrete sufficient to build a 40-storied structure. It said the work was an all-time best for a brownfield runway in India.
  • The busiest airport in Gujarat with over 200 flights every day before the coronavirus pandemic, SVPIA kept the runway open daily for 160 flights on an average during the remaining 15 hours of the day during the 75 days of re-carpeting work.

14 Indian Airports Get Ambulift to Aid Physically Challenged Passengers

  • The Airports Authority of India (AAI) equipped its 14 airports with ambulifts to help flyers with reduced mobility in boarding an aircraft. Made-in-India ambulifts have been deployed at these airports as they do not have aerobridge facilities. The 14 airports where this facility is available are in Dehradun, Gorakhpur, Patna, Bagdogra, Darbhanga, Imphal, Vijayawada, Port Blair, Jodhpur, Belgaum, Silchar, Jharsuguda, Rajkot and Hubli.
  • The ambulifts can cater to six wheelchairs and two stretchers with an attendant at a time and is fitted with heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system. The AAI took the initiative of providing ambulifts under the central government's Accessible India campaign to facilitate passengers with reduced mobility, divyang travellers on wheelchair and passengers on stretchers during their air travel.

Airports Council International: Atlanta Busiest Airport of the World

  • Atlanta and Dubai occupied the top two positions on the list while India's Delhi airport moved up by six places to the third spot. While London Heathrow moved up by 8 places to find a spot for the first time this year, Tokyo Haneda re-entered the list and occupied the 10th spot.
  • Once again, the United States dominated the list with five airports making more than half the seats in the top 10 rankings. According to the release, "the growth of the US airports came at the expense of Asian presence in the Global Top 10 as some of the big global airports of 2019, such as Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai slide down from their 2019 positions affected by travel restrictions." Guangzhou is the only Chinese airport to make it to the top ten list.

Kashmir Sees Record Tourist Arrivals this Year, Highest in a Decade

  • Kashmir, the Heaven on Earth received a record-breaking tourist footfall this year, the highest in a decade.
  • The major attraction for tourists is Asia's largest "tulip garden" which was opened for visitors on March 23. People are enjoying the beauty of 1.5 million multicoloured tulips under the foothills of the Zabarwan Mountains.
