Italian socialist David-Maria Sassoli was elected to head the European parliament, completing the bloc's drawn-out and at times acrimonious appointment process for its top jobs.
In the second round of voting at the Strasbourg-based legislature, Sassoli received 345 votes, well over the absolute majority required of the 667 available.
Conservative Jan Zahradil from the Czech Republic got 160 votes, while the German Greens leader Ska Keller received 119 and the Spanish left-wing candidate Sira Rego trailed with 43.
Sassoli succeeded fellow Italian Antonio Tajani, an Italian EPP Christian Democrat who stepped down.
B.K. Birla Passes Away
Basant Kumar Birla, chairman of the BK Birla Group and grandfather of industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, died in Mumbai. He was 98.
B. K. Birla, or Basant babu as he was fondly called in business circles, was born on January 12, 1921.
He was industrialist and philanthropist Ghanshyam Das Birla's youngest son.
Soon after completing his matriculation exam from Kolkata's legendary Hare School in 1936, BK Birla was inducted into the family business, specifically in Kesoram Industries Ltd.
In fact, B. K. Birla once mentioned in an interview that his first assignment was as a cashier at Kesoram.

N. S.Vishwanathan Gets Extension
N. S. Vishwanathan was re-appointed as deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for one more year.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved re-appointment of Vishwanathan as the deputy governor for a period of one more year with effect from July 4 this year (2019).
His existing tenure was to end on July 3, 2019.
Vishwanathan is one of the three deputy governors, besides B P Kanungo and M K Jain, working at the central bank.
Christine Lagarde to Step Down
International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde announced she would step down temporarily from the global crisis lender after being nominated to lead the European Central Bank.
EU leaders announced a deal to fill the top positions in the political and economic bloc, including picking Lagarde to succeed ECB chief Mario Draghi, whose single, eight-year term ends in November 2019.
The nomination means Lagarde would step down two years before the end of her second five-year term at the helm of the IMF, which would open a search for her replacement.
The fund's executive board met and named American economist David Lipton, Lagarde's chief deputy, as interim leader of the institution.

Sekar IOB's New MD and CEO
Former Dena Bank MD Karnam Sekar took over as the new Managing Director and CEO of Indian Overseas Bank. He replaced R. Subramaniakumar, who was instrumental in taking measures to turn around the bank, which has been reporting loses due to high NPA.
Sekar was on Special Duty and was a whole-time director of the Bank since April 2019.
His appointment came into effect on July 1, 2019.
Prior to joining IOB, he was MD & CEO of Dena Bank, a position he held till March 31, 2019.
Before that, he was Deputy MD and Chief Credit Officer in State Bank of India, heading its Highest Credit Committee.

New Haryana Chief Secretary
The Haryana government appointed 1983-batch IAS officer Keshni Anand Arora as the new chief secretary. She replaced DS Dhesi who retired after having an over four-year long stint.
Keshni is only the fourth woman IAS officer in Haryana to have been appointed to the top bureaucratic post. Her two elder sisters, Meenaxi Anand Chaudhary (2005-06) and Urvashi Gulati (2009-12), have also served as chief secretaries.
Meenaxi was, in fact, the first woman IAS officer in Haryana to have held the post of chief secretary. The third woman IAS officer to have held the top bureaucratic post was Promila Issar.
Being the senior-most IAS officer in the state, Keshni was the obvious choice to succeed Dhesi.
She would have a tenure of 14 months as the chief secretary.
While she would handle general administration, personnel, training parliamentary affairs, administrative reforms department, the charge of the vigilance department has not been handed to the new chief secretary.
