NBCC Appoints BK Sokhey As Director (Finance)

BK Sokhey has been appointed as Director (Finance) of NBCC. A B.Com (Hons) from Shree Ram College of Commerce and a fellow of the Institute of Costs Accountants of India, Sokhey joined NBCC in 1990, as accounts officer.
She has more than 30 years of rich experience of working in different capacities in all the areas of accounts and finance. NBCC (India) Limited is a blue-chip Government of India Navratna enterprise and a Central Public Sector undertaking which trades publicly in the market.

Sandeep Kumar Disqualified From Assembly For Defection

Rebel Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and former Delhi minister Sandeep Kumar was disqualified from the Delhi Assembly under the anti-defection law.
Kumar is the fourth MLA to be disqualified by Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel in the last three weeks.
The others MLAs are Kapil Mishra, Anil Bajpai and Devinder Sehrawat, who were disqualified, under the anti-defection law, for allegedly supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2019 general elections.
With the disqualification of the four MLAs, the strength of legislators in the 70-member House has come down to 66.

Italian PM Giuseppe Conte May Step Down

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will hand his resignation to the Italian president after telling lawmakers that his deputy's self-interested and irresponsible rebellion means the administration can't continue.
But Conte may not be ready to step aside just yet — he also savaged Matteo Salvini's demands for a snap election. Conte could stay in office and thwart Salvini's power grab if he can stitch together a fresh majority and persuade head of state Sergio Mattarella to give him a second shot at governing.

Veteran Music Composer Khayyam Passes Away

Mohammed Zahur Hashmi, popularly known as Khayyam, also a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Padma Bhushan died at the age of 92.
Veteran composer Khayyam, best known for his music in classic films such as 'Kabhie Kabhie' and 'Umrao Jaan', passed away after prolonged illnesses at a hospital.
The musician's other notable works include films such as 'Trishul', 'Noorie' and 'Shola Aur Shabnam'.

Pakistan's Army Chief Bajwa Gets 3-Year Extension

Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan approved a three-year extension to the tenure of Army chief general Qamar Javed Bajwa.
General Bajwa was appointed as army chief on November 26, 2016, by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
The extension of his tenure comes at a time of heightened tensions with India on Pakistan's eastern front.

Three-time Bihar CM Jagannath Mishra Dies At 82

A three-time Chief Minister who could not complete a single term and a Congress stalwart whose son served as a minister in an NDA government, Mishra died at a Delhi hospital after prolonged illness at the age of 82.
A professor of economics, Mishra was catapulted to the Chief Minister's post after his elder brother and then Union Railway Minister Lalit Narayan Mishra was killed in a blast at Samastipur in 1975. Mishra, too, was injured in the attack, but survived.

Balesh Sharma Steps Down As Chief Executive Of Vodafone Idea

Vodafone Idea Ltd chief executive officer (CEO) Balesh Sharma has resigned citing "personal reasons" and will be replaced by Vodafone Group's India representative, Ravinder Takkar.
Sharma's exit comes less than a year after the merged entity started operations on August 31, 2018.
The merged company has since lost market share and posted losses in every quarter of the past year, amid a bruising tariff war. Sharma, who was driving the integration process at the company, will take up a new role at Vodafone Group Plc.
Takkar is a board member of Vodafone Idea and Indus Towers.

Sri Lankan Army Gets New Chief

A general accused of war crimes was appointed Sri Lanka army chief, as the US warned his selection undermined efforts to ensure accountability after a long-running conflict with Tamil separatists.
Maj Gen Shavendra Silva was elevated to the army's second highest position of chief of staff in January, 2019 before his latest promotion by President Maithripala Sirisena to commander of the Sri Lankan army.
The president has appointed Major General Shavendra Silva as the 23rd commander of the army.
The 55-year old, who commanded an army division in the civil war, has been accused by the UN of war crimes during the final stages of the separatist conflict.

Argentine economy minister Nicolas Dujovne resigned capping a week of market chaos that followed President Mauricio Macri's stunning loss in a primary vote.
Hernan Lacunza, economic minister for the province of Buenos Aires, would replace Dujovne.

Harish Madhav Takes Over As Director Finance On Board Of OIL

Harish Madhav has taken over as Director Finance on the board of Oil India Limited. He would be succeeding Rupshikha Saikia Borah.
Earlier, Madhav was Executive Director (Finance) at Oil India's Corporate office and was also functioning as the Chief Financial Officer handling a diverse gamut of financial and accounting functions covering international fund raising, treasury management, etc.

PT Usha Appoints In AAAs Athletes Commission

PT Usha, one of India's greatest athletes, has been appointed as a member of the Asian Athletics Association's (AAA) Athletes Commission.
The other members of the commission are Kazakhstan's former Olympic champion triple jumper Olga Rypakova, China's Wang Yu, Malaysia's Lee Hup Wei and Saudi Arabia's Saad Shaddad.

K Venkateswara Rao Takes Charge As NABCONS MD

K Venkateswara Rao has taken charge as the Managing Director of NABARD Consultancy Services –NABCONS (a wholly owned subsidiary of NABARD) on superannuation of Naresh Gupta, the former Managing Director, NABCONS .
Prior to his appointment, he was heading Farm Sector Policy Department in National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Head Office, Mumbai as Chief General Manager.

INSA Gets First Woman President

Former director of the National Institute of Immunology Chandrima Shaha has been elected as the first woman president of the reputed Indian National Science Academy (INSA).
Shaha, who will head INSA from 2020, said her priority would be to make efforts to further popularise science among the masses, and she would also focus on more collaborations with foreign institutes.

Manmohan Files RS Nomination

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh filed his nomination for the August 26, 2019 bypoll to the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan.
The seat fell vacant after the death of Madan Lal Saini of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), also a former state party president. Rajasthan has 10 Rajya Sabha seats, so far all held by the BJP.
After filing his nomination, the 87-year-old leader thanked the Congress for nominating him.
