RSS Ideologue Madhav Govind Vaidya Passes Away

  • Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ideologue and the organisation's first spokesperson Madhav Govind Vaidya died after a brief illness. He was 97.
  • Vaidya, who became a volunteer of the RSS almost two decades after the organisation was set up, had seen it all during his eight decade-old association with it: the three bans, isolation, internal conflicts over joining politics, ferment and resurgence, changing power equations with the BJP, and the latter's storming to power at the Centre in 2014.
  • A former chief editor of the city-based pro-RSS Marathi daily 'Tarun Bharat', Vaidya became a member of the RSS in 1943 while at the Morris College in Nagpur.

Five-time Shiv Sena MP Mohan Rawale Dies

  • Five-time Shiv Sena MP from Mumbai, Mohan Rawale, died in at the age of 72.
  • Rawale represented the Mumbai South Central Lok Sabha seat five times between 1991 and 2004. He was expelled from the Sena briefly in 2013 for dissidence, but later rejoined the party.

Businessman and Philanthropist R. N. Shetty Passes Away

  • Eminent businessman and philanthropist R. N. Shetty passed away at the age of 92.
  • Born on August 15, 1928, at Murudeshwar in the coastal district of Uttara Kannada, Rama Nagappa Shetty founded the RN Shetty and Company in 1961 and ventured into the construction industry with focus on infrastructure building.
  • He built tunnels for the railways, dams, canals, bridges and buildings in various parts of Karnataka and neighbouring states. Later, he entered the hospitality and education sector and left a mark there as well.
  • The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industries had bestowed on him the Visvesvaraya Memorial Award in 2004 and the Bengaluru University conferred an honorary doctorate in 2009.

Shashi Shekhar Vempati New Vice President of Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union

  • Prasar Bharati CEO Shashi Shekhar Vempati was elected as the vice president of Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union, one of the largest broadcasting associations in the world.
  • The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union was formed in 1964 as a professional association of broadcasting organisations with over 286 members in 57 countries and regions, reaching the potential population of about three billion people.
  • Vempati has been elected to the office of the Vice President, ABU for three years with immediate effect. 

Siddharth Chatterjee Appointed United Nations Resident Coordinator in China

  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed senior UN official Siddharth Chatterjee of India as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in China.
  • Resident Coordinators are the UN Secretary-General's representatives for development at the country level. They lead UN teams supporting countries to recover better from the COVID-19 pandemic through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Guterres appointed Chatterjee as the Resident Coordinator in China, with the host government's approval.
  • Most recently, Chatterjee served as United Nations Resident Coordinator in Kenya, after holding other leadership positions across the organization.

Orissa High Court Gets New Chief Justice

  • Transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court from the Delhi High Court, Justice S. Muralidhar was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court.
  • The senior-most Judge of the court, Justice Rajesh Bindal, was transferred to the Calcutta High Court.
  • Currently, the Acting Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court, Justice Bindal joins there as the first Judge or the senior-most Judge after the Chief Justice.
  • Justice Hima Kohli of the Delhi High Court will take over as the new Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court.


Aerospace Scientist Roddam Narasimha Passes Away

  • Eminent aerospace scientist and fluid dynamicist Roddam Narasimha died in Bengaluru. He was 87.
  • In the past six decades, Narasimha made numerous contributions to several seminal aerospace programmes in India. He is most well known for his work on fluid dynamics, a study of the flow of fluids (liquid or gas), that includes modelling cloud flows, structure of shock waves, and fluid dynamics at atmospheric boundaries.
  • He was conferred with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, in 1987 and Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest, in 2013.
