Female Labour-force Participation in India Declines

  • Female labour-force participation in India declined from 34 per cent in 2006 to 24.8 per cent in 2020.
  • According to the UNGC (United Nations Global Compact) India study, India is the only country among the 153 surveyed countries where the economic gender gap is larger than the political gap.
  • The study found that raising women's participation in the labour force to the same level as men can boost India's GDP by 27 per cent.
  • Gender stereotypes and lack of infrastructure has traditionally sidelined women from core manufacturing functions. As a result, not many are able to reach leadership roles.
  • Globally, 38.7 per cent of employed women are working in agriculture, forestry and fisheries, but only 13.8 per cent of landholders are women.

IIT-Delhi Signs MOU with ZTE Telecom India

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Delhi) entered into a collaboration with ZTE Telecom India private limited for offering scholarships to undergraduate students. Under this ZTE Telecom India Scholarship three new students of undergraduate course will be offered Rs. 1 lakh per year for four years.
  • The scholarship will be awarded to the needy bright student from low income family who get selected in IIT for four years of his/ her undergraduate course.
  • The MOU was signed between ZTE India CEO Yan Xiao and Professor Sanjeev Sanghi Dean Alumni Affairs and International Relations at Board Room IIT Delhi in the presence of other senior Professors of IIT Delhi and officers of ZTE India.

Scientists Indentify Two Types of Coronavirus

  • Scientists in China said they had found that two different types of the coronavirus could be causing infections.
  • The researchers, from Peking University's School of Life Sciences and the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, examined a limited range of data and said follow-up analyses of larger data sets are needed to better understand the virus's evolution.
  • The preliminary study found that a more aggressive type of the coronavirus associated with the disease outbreak in Wuhan accounted for about 70% of analysed strains, while 30% was linked to a less aggressive type.
  • The prevalence of the more aggressive virus decreased after early January 2020.

IIT Bombay, Delhi among Top 50 Engineering Colleges

  • A subject-based ranking by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), known for its influential ranking of global educational institutions, which assesses varsities on around 50 subjects from art and design to engineering and management, sees Indian institutions, predictably, doing better in science and engineering.
  • The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) at Bombay, Delhi, Kharagpur, and Madras all appear in the top 100 in the engineering and technology ranking. IIT-Bombay topped the list with the 44th rank, followed by IIT-Delhi (47), IIT-Kharagpur (86) and IIT-Madras (88).
  • In natural sciences, there are no Indian institutions in the top 100. Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay is the top Indian institute and ranked 108, followed by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) at 111, IIT-Madras (195), IIT-Delhi (207), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (232) and University of Delhi (251).

Jump in UK Study Visas for Indians

  • The UK Immigration Statistics data showed that over 37,500 Indian students joined UK universities in 2019, a 93% jump in the number of study visas granted by Britain.
  • The data comes months after the UK announced the introduction of post-study work permit of two years for international students called the Graduate Immigration Route (GIR).
  • A total of 37,540 Indian students received a Tier 4 (study) visa in 2019, as against 19,479 in 2018. Data showed Indians also received 57,199 Tier 2 skilled work visas in 2019 clocking 3% growth from the year-ago.
  • This represents the largest number of visas issued to Indian students over the last eight years and continues the strong upward trend in student visa numbers since 2016. Indians are currently the fastest growing nationality for student visas.

Fresh Cases of Coronavirus in India

  • The global outbreak of coronavirus has affected India too, as three fresh cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the country in the last two days. The first two cases were reported from Telangana and Delhi on Monday (March 2) while the third case was reported from Jaipur on Tuesday (March 3).
  • Among the affected patents two had a travel history of Italy while the patient who was tested positive in Telangana had a travel history of Dubai. All the patients are kept under observation.
  • On Tuesday (March 3, 2020) a private school in Uttar Pradesh's Noida was shut down after it was reported that one of the parents of the student studying in the school tested Covid19 positive. The Uttar Pradesh Health Authorities conducted necessary medical checks at the school and sent the sample of the student for testing.
  • In another incident, six cases of coronavirus were also detected during sample testing in Uttar Pradesh's Agra. The samples of the patients have been sent to NIV, Pune for confirmation.

Arunachal Govt. to Close Down Zero Enrolment Schools

  • According to state Education Minister Taba Tedir, the Arunachal Pradesh government approved closing down of zero enrolment schools and a notification with guidelines has been issued in this regard.
  • Responding to a question by BJP MLA Nyato Rigia during the Question Hour in the Assembly, Tedir informed the House that the decision was taken after the education department conducted a survey of the schools that are non-functional due to no enrolment of students.
  • A total of 311 schools in the state are defunct due to zero enrolment, as per 2018-19 data of the Unified District Information on School Education Plus (UDISE+).
  • The teachers of the zero enrolment schools will be posted in other educational institutions where there is a shortage of educators.
  • The infrastructure of the closed down schools will be handed over to the deputy commissioners who will decide how to utilise them.
  • As per reports, Arunachal Pradesh has 1,300 primary, 300 middle and 103 high schools that are functional.

Over 80% of Deceased are Aged over 60 Years

  • According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the novel coronavirus appears to severely affect people over the age of 60, who account for 81% of all infection-related deaths.
  • The first large analysis of more than 44,000 cases from China found the death rate was 10 times higher in very old people compared to young people, unlike H1N1, which hit young adults the hardest in the outbreak years of 2009-10.
  • The data from China showed that only a handful of the children and teenagers (0-19 years) affected were hospitalised with fever, cough or other mild respiratory symptoms. They account for 0.1% of the total Covid-19-related deaths. Young adults (20-39 years) account for 2.5% of the total deaths.
