Kerala Removes Age Limit for Transgenders in University Admissions

The authorities of the state of Kerala have removed the upper age limit for transgender college students of the state who are seeking admission to numerous educational programs available in the State universities and its affiliated schools.
The resolution to remove the upper age limit has been done to encourage the transgender students in the State to pursue various postgraduate and undergraduate educational programs.
In the year 2018 the state authorities had sanctioned two seats reserved only for transpersons in all programs that are run by universities and affiliated schools in the State. This decision was taken to empower the transgender population of Kerala.
The authorities of Kerala had directed the state universities to undertake transgender coverage to deal with the differences faced by the college students who are transgender.
Views of the Kerala State Higher Education Council and the various universities of the state had been sought by the authorities before formulating the points on the basis of which the upper age limit for transgender candidates has been removed.

JNCASR Hits Nature Index Top 50 for Materials Science

The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre For Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru, has been placed in the top 50 institutions worldwide for advances in materials science by the prestigious Nature Index. The list which includes 18 institutes from China, 12 from the United States and 2 from the United Kingdom places the JNCASR in the 23rd position globally among universities and institutions as part of its '50 Rising Institutions' list.
The centre is also the only Indian institute on the list and shares the privilege with others such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University which is in the first place, the University of Texas Austin (fourth), the University of Berkley (12th) and the University of Cambridge (27th). JNCASR president Professor Giridhar U Kulkarni, who is also a materials scientist, described the mood at the centre as being jubilant.

IIM Bangalore to Offer Rural Entrepreneurship Incubation Programme

The innovation and entrepreneurship hub of IIM Bangalore, NSRCEL and Buddha Fellowship Program (BFP) have collaborated for a joint rural entrepreneurship incubation programme.
The rural entrepreneurship incubation programme aims to transform the development sector in terms of scale with quality and impact by attracting India's best and brightest talent.
It is directed at creating an ecosystem to nurture, support and provide opportunities for these professionals to pursue their aspiration to become development entrepreneurs, and in turn, build the future of India that is modern and inclusive for its less privileged and marginalised communities.

Yoga Training Included in 'Study in India' Programme

The Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, has said that Yoga training has been included in the "Study of India" programme. This will encourage people from abroad to get authentic training from India.
Pradhan gave the information in response to a written question in Lok Sabha.
The Government of India launched the "Study in India" programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Medical Council of India in April 2018.

China Reports First Human Death From Monkey B Virus

China has reported its first human infection with Monkey B Virus (BV) and subsequent death. A Beijing-based veterinary surgeon was infected with the virus after he dissected two dead monkeys in early March, according to China CDC Weekly.
The 53-year-old veterinarian started experiencing nausea and vomiting and a month later, fever and neurological symptoms followed. He visited several hospitals but eventually died on May 27, China CDC Weekly revealed.
Around mid-April, researchers collected cerebrospinal fluid from the patient for next-generation sequencing and the readings suggested possible alphaherpesvirus infection. They also collected several specimens including blister fluid, blood, nasal swab, throat swab, and plasma to further identify the etiological agent.

Stopping 'Death Signal': Scientists Look to Repair Hearts Using Deadly Spider Venom

A group of Australian scientists are looking to halt the harmful effects of heart attack by using the venom of one of the world's deadliest spiders.
The researchers have developed a drug candidate from a molecule found in the venom of the Fraser Island funnel-web spider to stop the "death signal" sent by the heart that leads to cardiac arrest.
The development of experimental medicine, which has only been tested in the lab so far, has been led by Dr Nathan Palpant and Professor Glenn King from The University of Queensland and Professor Peter Macdonald from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.
Explaining the 'death signal', Dr Palpant said that the heart attack causes a reduction in blood flow to the heart which subsequently results in a lack of oxygen to the heart muscle.

HIV 'Significant' Independent Risk Factor for Severe, Critical Covid-19

The World Health Organization warned that the human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV), which causes AIDS, is a "significant independent risk factor" for severe and critical cases of Covid-19 infection.
"A new WHO report confirms that HIV infection is a significant independent risk factor for both severe/ critical Covid-19 presentation at hospital admission and in-hospital mortality," the WHO said in a statement.
Nearly a quarter of the people (23.1% to be exact), who were infected with HIV and hospitalised for Covid-19, lost their lives, the global health body noted in the report, based on the clinical surveillance data from 37 countries about the risk for people living with HIV (PLHIV) admitted to hospital for Covid-19.
