UGC Declares 24 Universities Fake

In response to the question asked in the Lok Sabha whether the government has taken note that many fake/non-recognised universities are running in the country, the Education Minister informed that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 24 self-styled institutes fake and found two more in violation of norms.
Based on the complaints received from the students, parents, general public, and also through electronic print media, University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 24 self-styled institutes as fake universities.
Uttar Pradesh has the highest eight such fake universities and Delhi has seven such fake universities.

IIT Mandi Launches Start-up Exploration Programme

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi Catalyst started its 2nd Start-up Exploration programme of 2021 with Rajesh Kumar Prajapati, Director, Dept. of Industries, H.P., virtually flagging off the programme. Along with the chief guest, the virtual event was graced by the esteemed presence of Prof. Ajit K. Chaturvedi, Director, IIT Mandi; Samir Shah, Managing Partner, Peak Ventures, and faculty members of IIT Mandi.
As many as 23 start-up teams including 11 from Himachal Pradesh working in sectors including Waste Management, Agrotech, Healthtech, Enterprise Management, and Cleantech participated in the inaugural session.
The 23 startups selected by IIT Mandi Catalyst will go through a rigorous training and mentoring process over the next three months after which they will present their refined ideas on a demo-day. Most suitable ideas will be further supported by IIT Mandi Catalyst through a one-year program under various funding schemes.

IIT Roorkee Launches Seven New Academic Programmes in Technology

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee launched seven new academic programmes to cater to the rising demand for new-age technologies.
The seven new programmes are in select areas of engineering, architecture, economics and management along with specialisation in data science and artificial intelligence.
The new programmes involve the transmission of relevant knowledge and using the knowledge we produce. They are interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary, and also in line with National Education Policy 2020.
The programmes, which include six postgraduate degree programmes and one five-year integrated programme, would be offered to students from the next autumn session (2021-2022).

UAE Launches Covid Vaccine for Children Aged 3-17

United Arab Emirates (UAE) launched Covid-19 vaccines for children aged 3 to 17.
UAE will administer China's Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine to children aged 3-17.
This decision was taken after clinical trials and extensive evaluations. As per authorities, trial was monitored for immune response of 900 children.
UAE is among world's highest immunisation rates. It was already providing Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for children aged 12-15.
UAE has started manufacturing this covid-19 vaccine for Children under a joint venture between Sinopharm and Abu Dhabi-based technology company Group 42.
As per health ministry of UAE, 78.95% of population of 9 million have received one vaccine dose while 70.57% have been fully vaccinated.

Lakshadweep's First Nursing College

According to Lakshadweep's secretary for health and education, Amit Satija, Lakshadweep's first nursing college has got in-principle approval for affiliation from Gujarat's Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) in Surat after it failed to get "satisfactory response" from Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
Satija said that this would be the first nursing college in Lakshadweep. We are hopeful that in the next four to six weeks, we will start (running the) college. Initially, we will take lecturers on a contract basis. The college, where the medium of instruction will be English, will have 30 seats, with 24 reserved for girls.
The affiliation will be valid only after approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Gujarat Nursing Council and Indian Nursing Council.

27% Reservation for OBCs, 10% for EWS Candidates in Medical Courses

The government announced a 27-per cent quota for OBCs and 10 per cent reservation for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category in the All-India Quota (AIQ) scheme for undergraduate and postgraduate medical and dental courses from the current academic year, 2021-22.
This announcement would benefit nearly 1,500 OBC students in MBBS and 2,500 OBC students in postgraduation and also around 550 EWS students in MBBS and around 1,000 EWS students in postgraduation.

PM Modi Launches SAFAL, AI for All Initiatives

To commemorate the first anniversary of National Education Policy 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched SAFAL (Structured Assessment for Analysing Learning), and 'AI For All' joint initiative in collaboration with the CBSE.
SAFAL is a competency-based assessment for grades 3, 5, and 8 introduced by CBSE. It will be used to assess the progress of foundational skills and basic learning outcomes/competencies among students. As a diagnostic assessment, it will provide developmental feedback to schools and teachers to improve teaching-learning without additional examination pressure on students.
SAFAL will be conducted on a pilot basis in CBSE schools for students in grades 3, 5, and 8 during the academic year 2021-22, in key curricular areas of language, mathematics, and EVS/science. CBSE has invited affiliated schools to participate in SAFAL 2021-22.

Malaysia Registers World's First Affordable New Drug for Hepatitis C

World's first affordable as well as effective new drug for hepatitis C has been registered by Malaysia. This new drug offers hope for accessible treatment to the millions of people around the world who are suffering from this disease.
The drug which has been named ravidasvir has been approved for use along with an existing drug named sofosbuvir.
This approval came five years after the Malaysian government had partnered with Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) to develop the drug.
According to the World Health Organization, around 71 million people globally are thought to be living with Hepatitis C which is a blood-borne virus that is one of the leading causes of liver cancer and can lead to cirrhosis.
Hepatitis C has no vaccine.

IIT Hyderabad Develops Covid RNA Test Kit 'COVIHOME'

India's first Rapid electronic Covid-19 RNA Test kit that allows self-testing at home called 'COVIHOME' has been developed by a research group at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad. The kit has been validated by the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology and can be used to check for Covid-19 trace at the comfort of home.
This test kit can produce results within 30 minutes for both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
The major benefit of this testing kit is that it does not require RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction), an expert human resource, and a BSL 2 lab facility for the extraction of RNA, so it has the potential for one to take the test at home without expert supervision.
The validation report confirmed the kit's efficiency at 94.2 per cent, Sensitivity 91.3 per cent and Specificity 98.2 per cent.

Maruti Suzuki, Savitribai Phule Pune University Tie-up to Train Youth

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced a partnership with Maharashtra's Savitribai Phule Pune University to train youth in automobile retail. The aim is to offer a customised three years "Bachelor of Vocational Studies in Retail Management" course to students. The three-year curriculum will comprise one-year classroom training followed by two-year on-the-job training at Maruti Suzuki authorised dealerships.
The course is based on the concept of 'Earn while you Learn' where students will receive a stipend during their on-the-job training. The course will allow the students to build a promising career in automobile sales in India.
