IGNOU Signs MoU with Skill Development ministry to Integrate Skill Training with Higher Education

GNOU signed an MoU with the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) to help integrate skill training with higher education.
With this MoU, the trainees affiliated to National Skill Training Institutes, Industrial Training Institutes, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras and Jan Shikshan Sansthans will get a chance to join IGNOU's 3-year degree programme for higher education.
The aim of this MoU between Indira Gandhi National Open University and the skill development ministry is to make higher education, better livelihood opportunities available to these students which will lead to an upward mobility for them.

Oxford University Press Declares 'Anxiety' as Children's Word of the Year 2021

The Oxford University Press (OUP) has picked up 'Anxiety' as the Children's Word of the Year 2021, based on their recent research. Apart from "anxiety" (21%), "Challenging" (19%), "isolate" (14%), "Wellbeing" (13%) and "resilience" (12%) were the children's top five words. In 2020, Coronavirus was the Children's Word of the Year by OUP.
Over 8,000 children from across 85 schools in the UK, spanning Year 3 to Year 9, were surveyed and asked to choose the top words they would use when talking about health and wellbeing. The research highlights the widespread impact lockdown and school closures had on children, with almost a quarter of all surveyed choosing anxiety (21 per cent) as their number one word, closely followed by challenging (19 per cent) and isolate (14 per cent). However, wellbeing (13 per cent) and resilience (12 per cent) closely followed as their top words, signalling children's positive attitude in the face of recent challenges.

Haryana Govt. to Introduce Mandatory Board Exams for Classes 5 and 8

The Haryana government announced mandatory board exams for students of classes 5 and 8 studying in schools affiliated to BSEH. This order applies to all government and private schools in the state. The decision has been taken to monitor students' progress and to conduct a standardised assessment of the learning outcomes.
Students will have to take the exams, in order to be promoted to the next class. However, if a student fails the exam, a second chance will be provided to reappear for the exam. However, if the student is unable to pass even after additional academic help and re-examination, the student will be retained in the same class. The authorities will be declaring the result within one month of conducting the exam.

Himachal to Introduce Sanskrit language, Vedic Mathematics in Elementary Classes

In what is being termed as the saffronisation of education, the Himachal Pradesh School Education Board (HPSEB) chief Dr. Suresh Kumar Soni kicked off a controversy by saying that the board will introduce Sanskrit language from class 3 and Vedic mathematics from 6th standard onwards from the next academic session.
Dr. Soni while addressing a press conference in Dharamshala said that Vedic mathematics will be introduced from 6th standard onwards and at least three questions will be asked about the Vedic in each term.
HPSEB will be the first education board of the country to introduce Sanskrit in the third standard.

IIT Roorkee Wins National Award for Outstanding Research on Citizen-centric Services

IIT Roorkee researchers led by Prof. Dharmendra Singh won the national award called the National Gold Award for e-governance for 'Outstanding Research on Citizen-Centric Services by Academic/Research Institutions'. The Covid-19 period spurred various institutes around the world to come up with many different kinds of solutions for various problems being faced by common people.
The IIT Roorkee team won the award for the development of e-waste-based microwave absorbing material for electromagnetic shielding and stealth applications.
This development has applications in both civilian and military domains.

BHU Introduces India's First-ever Programme in Hindu Studies

The prestigious Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi has started a new postgraduate course - masters in Hindu Studies. The introduction of this new course makes BHU, the first university in India to offer a course in this discipline.
According to a BHU spokesperson, the postgraduate course is the first-of-its-kind to be offered by a university in the country.
Masters in Hindu studies is an interdisciplinary programme, which is designed in line with the National Education Policy, 2020.
The programme will be offered by the Bharat Adhyayan Kendra, in collaboration with the Department of Philosophy and Religion, Department of Sanskrit and Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture and Archaeology, under the faculty of Arts.
