'AquaMAP', An Inter-disciplinary Water Management and Policy Centre Established by IIT Madras

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras is establishing a new inter-disciplinary Water Management and Policy Centre called 'AquaMAP' to help in solving water problems in India. This Centre will design scalable models by leveraging innovative technologies to provide smart solutions for challenging water problems. As a proof of concept, these models would be installed in selected sites around the country.
AquaMAP hope to achieve:
Capability to address complex real-life water problems through a consortium approach
Gets established as an entity which can deliver solutions having a wide impact and application
Complete successful pilot studies in at least six water innovation villages / towns that can be showcased as replicable models for water management and policy implementation, within the country and more.
The principal investigator of AquaMAP is Ligy Philip, who is also the dean(planning) at IIT Madras.

Tripura will soon have a National Law University

Tripura will soon have a national law university. A bill seeking the creation of the university will be tabled in the next assembly session, said a top official of Tripura's education department. As per reports, the academic activities for the university are expected to take place in the Tripura Judicial Academy building for the next academic session. Later on, it will be shifted to a new building.
Tripura Law Minister Ratan Lal Nath met with the officials concerned to push the plan for setting up a full-fledged law university.

JNU Gets its First Female Vice-Chancellor

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) appointed its first female Vice-Chancellor (VC). Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, Professor at the Savitribai Phule Pune University, was appointed as the new JNU VC.
M. Jagadesh Kumar, who was holding the charge of acting VC at JNU after his five year term ended last year, was last week appointed as the chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Born in St Petersberg, Russia (USSR), in July 1962, Professor Pandit has been in the teaching field since 1988. She has been in the research field since 1985. She is a member of several prestigious organisations, such as the American Studies Research Institute, Hyderabad, the Indian Association of American Studies, the All India Political Science Association, the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, the Indian Secular Society, etc.

IIT-BHU and Japan's Niigata University to Conduct Joint Research, Student Exchange Programmes

The Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi (IIT BHU) and Japan's Niigata University signed an agreement to promote exchange and cooperation in education, joint research, holding of lectures and symposiums and participation of students/faculty members.
This collaboration will encourage students to be selected and nominated by the home university. As per the agreement, both parties will have to ensure that an equal number of students are exchanged and participated.
Under this agreement, both the universities will establish procedures and selection of exchange students based on their academic achievements. In addition to this, the host university will have to waive examination fee, entrance fees, and tuition fees for exchange students.

IIIT-Delhi and University of South Carolina's Artificial Intelligence Institute Sign MoU

The Center for Artificial Intelligence (CAI), Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology Delhi (IIIT-Delhi), and Artificial Intelligence Institute, University of South Carolina (AIISC) signed an MoU to promote academic cooperation and research collaboration, with an international focus among students and faculty members, for the mutual benefit of both institutes.
This collaboration will facilitate the sharing of co-advised thesis or participating on the dissertation committee for students and PhD candidates, and the interchange of scholarly papers, research materials, and other information in both parties' areas of interest.
This MoU focuses on productivity and a desire to bridge the knowledge gap and promote innovation and will provide groundbreaking results that will benefit all the parties involved.

IGNOU Launches Master of Arts in Sustainability Science

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) launched Master of Arts in Sustainability Science (MASS). The programme is in line with the principles of National Education Policy 2020, and is on offer from January 2022 admission cycle in Online Distance Learning (ODL) mode at the School of Interdisciplinary and Trans-disciplinary Studies.
Sustainability Science is an emerging discipline across the world. It is well acknowledged as one of the tools to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and to promote sustainability in every sphere of life.
The programme has adopted an interdisciplinary and trans-disciplinary approach to educate the learners in the areas of India's major ecosystems and challenges to sustainable development such as population, health, climate change, globalization and social ecology.

JNU Vice-Chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar is UGC Chairman

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) vice-chancellor M. Jagadesh Kumar was appointed as chairman of higher education regulator University Grants Commission (UGC).
Kumar's name was shortlisted for the post along with that of Nitin R. Karmalkar, the vice-chancellor of the Pune University, and Avinash Chandra Pandey, director, Inter-University Accelerator Centre, a body under the UGC. The appointment comes amid changes in the higher education sector with the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020.
Kumar is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras. He was a professor at IIT Delhi before he was appointed as the vice-chancellor in 2016.

Global Center of Excellence in Affordable and Clean Energy Launched in IIT Dharwad

The Global Center of Excellence in Affordable and Clean Energy was launched at IIT Dharwad. The center will enhance the research in affordable and clean energy. The center will create, incubate technologies, physical infrastructure. Also, it will create clean energy solutions. The solutions will target on livelihoods of rural communities.
The center is to be supported by CSR funds. CSR is Corporate Social Responsibility. The CSR funds are to come from HHSIF. HHSIF is Honeywell Hometown Solutions India Foundation. HHSIF provides funds in five main areas such as family safety and security, science and math education, housing and shelter, sustainability and humanitarian relief.
