PIVOT: AI-based Tool to Detect Cancer

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) developed an Artificial Intelligence-based tool, PIVOT, that can predict cancer-causing genes in an individual. This early information can not only help prevent cancer but even devise personalised cancer treatment strategies.
The tool is based on a machine learning model that classifies genes as tumour suppressor genes, oncogenes or neutral genes. The tool was able to successfully predict both the existing oncogenes and tumour-suppressor genes like TP53, and PIK3CA, among others, and new cancer-related genes such as PRKCA, SOX9 and PSMD4.

IGNOU Launches MAJMC in Hindi and Tamil for Online, ODL Mode

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) launched a new programme — MA in Journalism and Mass Communication in two Indian languages.
While the MAJMC programme is already being offered in English language, in both online, and open and Distance Learning modes, it will now be offered in Hindi and Tamil.
The programme has been launched by the School of Journalism and New Media Studies (SOJNMS) to integrate recommendations of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It is being introduced with the aim to facilitate the teaching-learning process in various Indian languages.

IIT Roorkee Launches Executive Programme in Business Analytics for Professionals

The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee (IIT-Roorkee) launched an executive program in Business Analytics for Strategic Decision Making. The course will be offered via ed-tech platform Simplilearn.
The Business Analytics for Strategic Decision-Making program, as per IIT-Roorkee, will help understand the essentials of business analytics such as statistics, predictive analytics, prescriptive analytics, and machine learning techniques, data visualization, data storytelling, and much more, along with the real-world applications of analytics across multiple business functions.
As per IIT-Roorkee, the program is best suited for professionals with at least 6 years of work experience from a wide range of industries and backgrounds such as Business Analysts, mid to senior-level managers, C-suite executives, consultants, and business heads who aspire to apply analytics to make more efficient business decisions.

Union Health Ministry and Panchayati Raj Ministry Sign MoU with Aim to Eliminate TB in India

Union Health Ministry and Panchayati Raj Ministry signed an MoU with the aim to eliminate TB in India. The MoU was signed by Dr. Bijaya Kumar Behera, Economic Adviser on behalf of the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and Dr. P Ashok Babu, Joint Secretary on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
The MoU will forge inter-Ministerial collaboration and strategic partnerships with the aim to achieving the Prime Minister's ambitious target of eliminating TB in India by 2025.

Punjab Technical University Gets B in First-ever NAAC Grading

Punjab's first technical university found itself in a piquant situation with National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarding it grade B in its first-ever inspection for the assessment of the 'quality status' even as several colleges affiliated with it secured A+ or A grade. To put things in perspective, A+ equals rank 2 in the NAAC in the eight-grade NAAC rating in which the IK Gujral Punjab Technical University (IKGPTU) was at rank 6.
The NAAC, an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission (UGC), assesses and accredits institutes of higher education. The highest grade it awards is A++ followed by A+, A, B++, B+, B, C, and D.
The NAAC found the 25-year-old state-run university lagging in "research, innovations, and extension". The PTU, as it is popularly known, has applied for a review.

Nokia to Work with Indian Institute of Science on Networked Robotics

Nokia and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) announced the opening of the Nokia Center of Excellence (CoE) in Networked Robotics at the IISc. in Bengaluru.
The CoE would promote inter-disciplinary research involving robotics and advanced communication technologies in 5G and Artificial Intelligence (AI). It would also develop use cases across industrial automation, agriculture and disaster management. The centre would facilitate engagement and co-operation between academia, start-ups and industry ecosystem partners to research and develop these use cases.
The research projects undertaken by the CoE would include the design of advanced robotics, AI and automation solutions built upon next generation telecom networks and their applications for solving societally relevant problems.

Rajasthan Govt. Set to Introduce India's First Right-to-health Bill

The Rajasthan government is soon likely to introduce in the Assembly the Right to Health Bill, the first of its kind in India, which aims to commit to quality and affordable health care services through government and private health care providers.
In January, the government had prepared a draft bill that defines the rights of patients, their attendants and health care providers, as well as a system for addressing grievances of the stakeholders.
The right to health was promised by the Congress in its 2018 Assembly election manifesto.

PM Modi Inaugurates 3-day Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a three-day Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Samagam in Varanasi, organised by the Ministry of Education in association with University Grants Commission (UGC) and Banaras Hindu University.
The three-day seminars brought together over 300 Vice-Chancellors and Directors from public and private universities, educationists, policymakers, as also industry representatives to deliberate on how the implementation of National Education Policy 2020 can be taken further across the country after successful implementation of several initiatives in the last two years.
The Summit provided a platform for leading Indian Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to discuss, deliberate and share insights on strategies, success stories and best practices in implementing the National Education Policy, 2020.

India's First Testbed for Autonomous Navigation Launches at IIT-Hyderabad

Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh inaugurated the TiHAN Testbed for Autonomous Navigation for both ground and aerial vehicle testing at IIT Hyderabad.
It will be the destination for next-generation safe, sustainable and smart mobility solutions. The country's first testbed for autonomous navigation would provide a platform for industries, research and development labs and academia to drive collaborative research in autonomous navigation.
TiHAN (Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation) is a multi-departmental initiative, including researchers from Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at IIT-Hyderabad.
TiHAN is recognised as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
TiHAN, in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, has started a two-year MTech programme on Smart Mobility, a first-of-its-kind programme in the country.

Greenko Signs MoU with IIT-H to Set up School of Sustainable S&T

Greenko, an energy transition and industrial decarbonisation solutions company, signed an agreement with IIT-Hyderabad to launch the country's first dedicated school for sustainable science and technology.
The Greenko School of Sustainable Science and Technology (GSSST) will help plug the gaps in research, education and skills in the sustainable development space.
The school will promote studies in climate change mitigation; artificial intelligence and space technology; energy transition and industrial transformation; circular and regenerative economy; and industrial ecology and net zero clusters.
