Tharoor among Winners of Sahitya Akademi Award

  • Politician-writer Shashi Tharoor and playwright Nand Kishore Acharya are among 23 writers chosen for the Sahitya Akademi Award 2019.
  • The National Academy of Letters announced the names of the winners.
  • While Tharoor won the award for his book 'An Era of Darkness in English, Acharya will receive it for his book of Hindi poetry, 'Chheelatey Hue Apne Ko'.
  • Seven poets will also be given the award, while six authors will get the recognition in short story category. Three books of essay by Chinmoy Guha (Bengali), Om Sharma Jandriari (Dogri), and Ratilal Borisagar (Gujarati) were also named for the award.
  • The winners will receive an engraved copper plate and Rs. 1 lakh cash prize at a function in February 2020.

DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2019

  • Author Amitabha Bagchi won DSC Prize for South Asian Literature 2019, for his novel 'Half the Night is Gone'. It is Bagchi's third novel.
  • The winner for this year's DSC Prize was announced at the IME Nepal Literature Festival in Nepal. Author Amitabha Bagchi was handed over the prize by Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali.
  • DSC Prize for South Asian Literature is a prestigious international literary prize. It is awarded annually to writers of any ethnicity or nationality writing about South Asia themes such as culture, history, people or politics.
  • The DSC Prize is worth US $25,000 and is awarded for novels published in year preceding judging of prize.

Varsity Wins Awards

  • SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur received 7 recognitions in a short span of 45 days. The awards are of national and international importance and have added yet another feather to its cap. This QS-IGauge Diamond rated institute has been the recipient of STEM impact award, Green Metric Award, AICTE-CII IndPact Award for Best Industry-linked institution for Electrical Engineering and Allied Institute, University of the Year Award 2019 from FICCI and three Swachhata ranking awards from AICTE.
  • SRMIST is the only privately funded university to receive the STEM impact award, others being IIT Kanpur and two CSIR labs.

Ben Stokes BBC Sports Personality of the Year

  • Ben Stokes won the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2019 award for his heroics in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019 and the home Ashes series.
  • Stokes is only the fifth cricketer, and the first since Andrew Flintoff in 2005, to have received the honour since it began in 1954. The award, announced is part of BBC's annual sporting awards, and celebrates the best of British sport, with the public voting on shortlisted candidates.
  • Stokes finished ahead of the six-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, who came runner-up for a second consecutive year and fourth in total, and the world champion sprinter Dina Asher-Smith, who was third. The other shortlisted athletes were the footballer Raheem Sterling, the Wales rugby captain, Alun Wyn Jones, and the world champion heptathlete, Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica Miss World

  • Jamaica's Toni-Ann Singh bagged the Miss World 2019 at an annual beauty pageant, with India's Suman Rao becoming second runners-up.
  • The 23-year-old Jamaican was declared the winner at a televised event, hosted by British television personality Piers Morgan, held at ExceL London.
  • Born to her Indo-Caribbean father Bradshaw Singh and African-Caribbean mother Jahrine Bailey, Singh is a student of women's studies and psychology at Florida State University and she aspires to be a medical doctor.

President Kovind to Present Visitor's Awards 2019

  • President Ram Nath Kovind will present the Visitor's awards, 2019 at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The awards will be conferred during the conference of Vice-Chancellors of Central Universities, Directors of IISERs and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Subsequent to the presentation of the awards, the conference will witness presentations by several sub groups of the heads of institutions.
  • These will on issues such as the promotion of research, innovation and entrepreneurship, industry-academia linkages, filling up of vacancies, creating and utilising alumni-based endowment funds and completing infrastructure projects.
  • Apart from the heads of 49 institutions of higher learning, Human Resource Development Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Sanjay Dhotre will attend the Conference. Secretaries of concerned Departments, Chairmen of University Grants Commission and AICTE will also take part in it.

PM Modi Bags India's 'Golden Tweet' of 2019

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi bagged yet another social media accolade. His tweet celebrating the Bharatiya Janata Party's victory in 2019 Lok Sabha polls is the most retweeted and liked tweets of the year, according to Twitter.
  • The "Golden Tweet" - as Twitter calls it - was posted by PM Modi on May 23, 2019 and said, "Together we grow. Together we prosper. Together we will build a strong and inclusive India. India wins yet again! #VijayiBharat."
