Ramesh Chandra is New CBI Chief Information Officer

  • Senior Indian Information Service (IIS) officer Ramesh Chandra Joshi became the new face of the CBI for interactions with the media by taking charge as its chief information officer. The post was lying vacant since March.
  • Joshi was posted as the additional director general of the government's Press Information Bureau (PIB), from where he was picked for the high-pressure job at the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
  • Joshi who has handled crucial positions in the PIB and the erstwhile Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity (DAVP), may bring a new outlook at the CBI, which does not have any presence on social media unlike the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and relies mostly on its spokespersons to communicate with the media.

Padma Shri Dance Historian Sunil Kothari Passes Away

  • Padma Shri dance historian and critic Sunil Kothari passed away after he suffered a cardiac arrest a month after testing positive for coronavirus. He was 87.
  • Hailing from Baroda, Kothari took to dancing in the 1940s.
  • He studied chartered accountancy, but could never stay off the dance circuit and was eventually pulled into it by the legendary Mulk Raj Anand, the editor of the art magazine "Marg."
  • It was Anand who first invited Kothari to edit an issue on Chhau among other masked dances of India.
  • The edition was published in 1968 and there was no looking back since.

RCP Singh Becomes New JD(U) President

  • Bureaucrat-turned-politician Ram Chandra Prasad Singh, better known by his initials RCP was chosen as the new president of the JD(U).
  • At the party's national executive meeting, Kumar proposed the name of Singh for the top post and it was then approved by other members.
  • The Chief Minister, who was re-elected as the JD(U) president in 2019 for three years, gave up the post in favour of Singh, its leader in the Rajya Sabha.
  • The man who prefers to keep a low profile was so far the general secretary (organisation) of the regional party.
  • The 1984-batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre has been with Kumar since his stint as the Railway minister in the government led by late Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Arya Rajendran set to Become India's Youngest Mayor from Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram

  • The CPI(M) has chosen 21-year-old Arya Rajendran as its Mayor candidate after the party's district committee and state committee sanctioned her candidature. She is a first-time councillor from Mudavanmugal division of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation.
  • Arya Rajendran is a B.Sc. Mathematics student and is the party's Chala area committee member. She will be the youngest Mayor of the country, and with this, the party leadership is expecting to have more educated women into the leadership role.
  • The name of a 23-year-old first-time councillor from Vanchiyoor division, Gayatri Babu had also come up during the discussion, but Arya was given the green signal as she is the state president of the "Balasangam", the party's children's wing and also the CPI(M) area committee member.

Ivry Gitlis One of the Modern Greats of Classical Music Passes Away

  • Celebrated Israeli violinist Ivry Gitlis died in Paris aged 98.
  • A hugely charismatic figure with a passion for experimentation, Gitlis has been described as one of the modern greats of classical music.
  • He played with the world's finest orchestras but was said to be equally at home performing with rock stars and jazz virtuosos.
  • In 1955, he became the first Israeli musician to play in the Soviet Union.
  • Gitlis was also a staunch advocate of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
  • He was born in 1922 in Haifa to Jewish parents who had left what is now Ukraine.
  • As well as having a successful music career, he was a goodwill ambassador for the UN.

Renowned Malayalam Poet-activist Sugathakumari Dies

  • Acclaimed Malayalam poet and environmental activist Sugathakumari passed away following Covid-19 complications at the Medical College Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. She was 86.
  • Sugathakumari was an influential voice in the field of Malayalam literature with her works garnering all the major accolades on offer in the country. She was a recipient of the Kerala Sahitya Akademi award, Kendra Sahitya Akademi award, Odakkuzhal award, Ezhuthachan award among others.
