PM pays Tributes to Rabindranath Tagore, Maharana Pratap, Gopal Krishna Gokhale

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid rich tributes to BishwaKavi Rabindranath Tagore on the occasion of his birth anniversary today. Remembering Nobel laureate Tagore, Mr. Modi said that may the exemplary ideals of the renowned polymath keep giving everyone the strength and inspiration to build the India he dreamt of.
  • Rabindranath Tagore's birth anniversary is also called Pachishe Boishakh in Bengali. Poet, novelist, essayist, philosopher and musician, Tagore is one of those great masters of literature whose works hardly left any human emotion untouched.
  • Gurudev penned over 2000 songs, which are known as 'Rabindra Sangeet'. He became the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. The coveted honour was bestowed upon him after the publication of his acclaimed collection of poems, Geetanjali.
  • According to the Nobel committee, Tagore was recognised for the prestigious prize "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."

Former Union Minister Matang Sinh Passes Away

  • Former Union Minister Matang Sinh died because of COVID-19 related complications.
  • A former Rajya Sabha member from Assam, the 58-year-old politician was a close aide of former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao.
  • He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1992 and served as the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs from 1994 to 1998 in Rao's government.
  • He was expelled in 1998 on disciplinary grounds after he had made controversial comments against party president Sonia Gandhi.

Swadhin Bangla Betar Artist Anup Bhattacharya Passes Away

  • Freedom fighter and Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra musician Anup Bhattacharya passed away in Dhaka. He was 77.
  • Anup Bhattacharya was recognised as an exceptional Tagore singer. He also composed Baul songs and modern Bangla songs.
  • During the liberation war of Bangladesh he worked as the composer and music director at Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra. Some of his patriotic songs like Teer Hara Ei Dheu-er Sagor, Rokto Diye Naam Likhhechhi, Purbo Digonte and Nongor Tolo Tolo inspired the liberation war fighters during 1971.
  • Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra was the medium for radio broadcasting of the liberation war fighters of Bangladesh in 1971. It played a crucial role during the liberation war which reached a vast audience in the then East Pakistan.
  • After the independence of Bangladesh, he composed several popular songs in Bangla. He was considered a prominent voice of the modern Bangladeshi music genre. Anup Bhattacharya was the founder member of the Rabindra Sangeet Shilpi Sangstha.

Vijay Goel Takes over as CMD of THDCIL

  • THDC India Ltd has announced that Vijay Goel assumed as chairman and managing director. His appointment will come into effect from May 1, 2021. He joined the company in 1990 as a senior personnel officer (SPO) from NHPC Ltd. He has more than 35 years of varied experience in the field of human resource management.
  • During his tenure as general manager, he was also in charge of corporate communications, law and arbitration functions. His key areas of interventions are policy formation, manpower planning, establishment and estate functions, employee relations, compliance of labour laws and overall formulation and implementation of policies. He played a vital role in putting in place initial HR systems immediately after the establishment of the THDCIL.

Air Marshal PM Ramachandran Passes Away

  • Former Vice Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal PM Ramachandran, passed away following a brief illness.
  • He was commissioned as a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force in 1955 and participated in the Liberation of Goa six years later where he destroyed a Portuguese patrol boat and was awarded the gallantry award Shaurya Chakra.
  • He held various command and staff appointments in his about four-decade old career and as Vice Chief, was "responsible for the operational deployment of India's short range ballistic missile, Prithvi.

Chaudhary Ajit Singh, Former Union Minister Passes Away

  • Rashtriya Lok Dal President Chaudhary Ajit Singh passed away due to COVID-19.
  • The son of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, Chaudhary Ajit Singh was a seven-time MP from Baghpat. He also served as the Union Minister of Civil Aviation.
  • Son of a formidable farmer leader Charan Singh, who helmed the country for six months in 1979-1980, Ajit Singh worked 15 years in the computer industry in the United States before he returned to the country to inherit the political fief of his father in the prosperous western Uttar Pradesh.
  • An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, Ajit Singh was first elected to Rajya Sabha in 1986.
