Kezang D. Thongdok of Arunachal Pradesh Wins 2020 Dada Saheb Phalke Award

  • An independent filmmaker, Kezang D. Thongdok won the 2020 Dada Saheb Phalke Award for his documentary "Chi Lupo" – showcasing the practice of collection of honey from the perched rocky hilltops.
  • He is currently working on a documentary Khiksaba about an unexplored festival of Shertukpen tribe.
  • The documentary Chi Lupo portrays the customs and practices of the Shertukpen community.
  • The Chi in the title of the documentary refers to honey and Lupo refers to hunter.

Indian Battalion Wins the Annual UNIFIL Environment Award for 2020

  • The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Stefano Del Col awarded the annual environment awards of UNIFIL to 7 mission entities. An Indian Battalion (INDBATT) stationed with UNIFIL was declared first for environmental contributions.
  • The annual award was launched by UNIFIL on 4th December 2019 to recognise the environmental achievements within the Mission's area of operations.
  • UNIFIL's INDBATT was declared first for their project towards increasing awareness and to reduce the generation of waste by planting seedlings and building green house and compost pits in their region and areas of responsibility with a focus on reducing littering and to increase the reuse of plastic bottles.
  • The Second place award was shared by the Mission's Sector West Headquarters for the Sector West Infrastructure Management Centre (IMC) for generation of compost from food waste and Irish-Polish Battalion (IRISHPOLBATT) for its project in supporting the host communities by reducing the environmental hazards.
  • French-led Force Commander's Reserve, Indonesian Battalion, Republic of Korea Battalion and Italian Battalion are the other units of UNIFIL who received the awards and recognitions.

Rajagiri Media Announces Awards for Innovation in Education

  • Two national awards in the field of education have been launched by Rajagiri Media to promote outstanding contributions by start-ups in education sector and the schools who have come up with innovative practices during the lockdown.
  • The Pallikkutam National Award for Innovation in Education 2020 is meant to recognise the disruptive innovations in education. Among the activities of schools assessed include content creation, e-learning pedagogy, teaching-learning, online assessments and management. The award carries a total prize money of Rs. 1,75,000 with the winner getting Rs. 100,000 and second and third prize winners getting Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 25,000, respectively.
  • The entries will be evaluated by a team of experts at Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode.
  • The Pallikkutam National Award for start-ups in education 2020 is meant to for DPIIT-recognised start-ups who have implemented disruptive and frugal solutions in education technology sector. The award is being given in collaboration with Kerala Start-up Mission.
  • The awards carry a total prize money of Rs. 1,75,000 and the winner gets Rs. 1 lakh.
  • According to Varghese Panthalookaran, Director of Rajagiri Media, the lockdown has thrown up immense challenges caused by disruptions in traditional learning and the need to incorporate new methods of virtual learning for extended periods. The two awards are meant to motivate stakeholders in education to come up with new technologies and systems to convert the crisis into an opportunity for a paradigm shift in education.

Hittakkal Group Wins Titles at the Golden Leaf India Award

  • For the 16th successive year, the Hittakkal group has won bagful of titles at The Golden Leaf India Award: Southern Tea Competition (TGLIA), a joint initiative of Tea Board and the UPASI.
  • The group won five titles this year – three in CTC and two in Orthodox.

Freya Thakral Named among 2020's Diana Award Roll of Honours

  • Freya Thakral, a 13 year old student of the British School New Delhi received the 2020 Diana Award for her Recycler App, which she developed to connect users with waste-handlers as a measure to help the ragpickers of Delhi .The award is presented annually on the birth anniversary of Princess Diana.
  • The Diana Award was established in 1999 in memory of Princess Diana, to recognise the social work and humanitarian efforts of youngsters across the United Kingdom and around the world.
  • The Diana Awards has a 13 member judge panel representing each nation of the UK and 3 panels representing other countries, each panel representing an education or youth work professional and a business or government.

Siddhartha Mukherjee and Raj Chetty Named among '2020 Great Immigrants' Honourees

  • Carnegie Corporation of New York has named 2 renowned Indian-Americans, Siddhartha Mukherjee, a Pulitzer Prize winner and Raj Chetty, Economics Professor at Harvard University among '2020 Great Immigrants' honourees.
  • Siddhartha Mukherjee is a noted biologist, oncologist, and the author of several acclaimed books. He has been a faculty of Columbia University since 2009.
  • He won the Pulitzer Prize for his book 'The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer' in 2011. He received the Padma Shri in 2014. Among other honours this book was listed in the Time magazine's "All-Time 100 Nonfiction Books".
  • Raj Chetty served as a economics professor in University of California, Berkeley in 2003, Stanford in 2015.
  • He has helped to launch a resource to monitor the real-time economic impact of COVID-19 on people, businesses, and communities across the United States.
  • He received the Padma Shri in 2015, the John Bates Clark Medal of the American Economic Association in 2013 & Young Labor Economist Award in 2010.
  • He has been named a MacArthur Fellow (2012) and an Andrew Carnegie Fellow (2019).
  • Carnegie Corporation of New York every 4th of July since 2006, recognises an extraordinary group of immigrants who have made exemplary contributions to the progress of American society.
