Wabag Wins Prestigious Global Water Award for Project in Chennai

  • Water technology major Va Tech Wabag won the prestigious Global Water Award for its 45 million litres a day tertiary treatment reverse osmosis (TTRO) plant at Koyambedu in Chennai.
  • The plant bagged the distinction award under 'wastewater project of the year' category.
  • The TTRO plant is one of the largest and technologically most advanced water reuse plants in India designed and built by a consortium comprising Wabag and IDE Technologies for Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
  • The plant makes Chennai the first Indian city to reuse more than 20 per cent of its treated wastewater.
  • The project will boost Chennai's water resilience and sustainability in the wake of the city's ongoing struggles with drought and water scarcity. The treated water from the plant caters to water requirements of the industrial hub in south Chennai.
  • Wabag is currently involved in more than 65 operations and maintenance contracts globally. The group has a workforce of over 1,600 and offices in more than 20 countries. Since 1995, Wabag has completed over 900 water and wastewater plants worldwide.

Anand Mahindra, Shantanu Narayen to Receive 2020 Leadership Awards from USISPF

  • A top US-based India-centric business advocacy group will honour Mahindra group Chairman Anand Mahindra and Adobe Chairman and CEO Shantanu Narayen with its 2020 Leadership Awards in recognition of their exemplary vision towards promoting US-India bilateral ties.
  • The award, announced on Friday, would be presented during the third Annual Leadership Summit, titled "US-India Week: Navigating New Challenges", which will convene virtually from August 31.
  • The week-long programme, which will conclude on September 3, will include a range of strategic discussions between USISPF's board members, which include 21 Fortune 500 CEOs, and senior government officials from both the countries.
  • The summit will highlight areas of bilateral cooperation: trade and investment relations; strategic energy ties; India's position in global supply chains, collaboration in fintech, healthcare, and technology; and building a fair tax regime to attract FDIs, among others.

National Sports Awards 2020

  • India's limited-overs vice-captain and opening batsman Rohit Sharma is all set be conferred with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, which is given for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports by a sportsperson over a period of four years.
  • Besides Rohit, only three more Indian cricketers namely legendary player Sachin Tendulkar, wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni and current Indian skipper Virat Kohli have been honoured with the country's highest sporting honour.
  • Table tennis star Manika Batra, wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Indian women's hockey team player Rani, para-athlete Mariappan Thangavelu will also be honoured with the prestigious award as confirmed by the selection committee of the National Sports Award 2020.
  • Meanwhile,a total of 27 other sportsperson will recieve Arjuna Award, while five coaches will be honoured with the Dronacharya Award during 2020 National Sports Awards.

Ganesh Vilas Lengare Receives Star 2020 Certificate by World Book of Records, London

  • Solapur based social activist Ganesh Vilas Lengare was awarded the Star 2020 Certificate by the World Book of Records, London. The organisation, founded in 2017, honours personalities for their outstanding contribution towards humanity and universal peace.
  • Recognising his efforts to help the needy during the coronavirus induced lockdown, Ganesh Lengare was awarded the Star 2020 e-citation certificate. Out of the 21 schemes that were launched by him to assist the people, the most important was the COVID patient contact tracing, that was implemented with the help of Solapur district authorities.
  • Understanding the need for spreading awareness regarding maintaining hand hygiene, wearing masks and following social distancing, Mr. Lengare organised various online contests and produced educational videos.

Nagaland School Wins Pallikutam Award for Innovation in Education

  • The first-ever Pallikkutam National Award for Innovation in Education, instituted by Rajagiri Media, was won by St. Christopher School, Chessore Village, Nagaland.
  • The silver award was won by DAV Public School, Haryana, and the bronze award by CMI Christ School, Iritty in Kerala.
  • The awards, carrying a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000, Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 25,000, respectively, are meant to honour education leadership by way of frugal and disruptive innovations that help them cross the Covid-19 induced academic lockdown. The awards are sponsored under the CSR initiative of Federal Bank.
  • The award winners were chosen by an expert jury set up by the Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode.

Cricketer Rohit Sharma, Wrestler Vinesh Phogat among 4 Picked For Khel Ratna Award

  • Cricketer Rohit Sharma and woman wrestler Vinesh Phogat were among the four athletes recommended for this year's Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award -- the country's highest sporting honour. Women's table tennis star Manika Batra and Rio Paralympic gold-winning high jumper Mariappan Thangavelu were the other two sportspersons recommended for the prestigious award by a 12-member selection committee of the Sports Ministry. This is only the second time that four athletes have been recommended for the top sporting accolade.
  • In 2016, star shuttler P. V. Sindhu, gymnast Dipa Karmakar, shooter Jitu Rai and wrestler Sakshi Malik were collectively given this award.
  • Rohit will only be the fourth cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and current skipper Virat Kohli to be conferred with the Khel Ratna.

Soumya Swaminathan Honoured with TN CM's Special Award

  • Chief Scientist of World Health Organisation, Soumya Swaminathan was conferred with the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's special award, in recognition of her advisory role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
  • Swaminathan received the award from Chief Minister K. Palaniswami on the 74th Independence Day celebration at Fort St George.
  • Meanwhile, the Chief Minister's Best Practices award was bagged by the department of treasuries, while the Greater Chennai Corporation received the second prize for conducting fever clinics across the city to break the transmission chain of COVID-19.
  • Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation received the certificate of appreciation for various steps undertaken to ensure uninterrupted availability of drugs for combating coronavirus.
