Indo-American Rohit Chopra Nominated as Director of Consumer Financial Protect

  • Indo-American Rohit Chopra's nomination has been sent to the Senate for Director of Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection (CFPB).
  • Chopra of the District of Columbia will assume the post of the Director, Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection for a term of five years.
  • Previously Chopra had served as a CFPB assistant director and as student loan ombudsman person after the agency was launched in 2011. Since 2018, he has served as a Federal Trade Commissioner and Special Advisor at the US Department of Education.
  • Rachel Leland Levine to be Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services, vice Brett Giroir; Victoria Nuland, of Virginia, to be the Under Secretary of State (Political Affairs), vice David Hale; and Julie A. Su, of California, to be Deputy Secretary of Labour, vice Patrick Pizzella are some of the other nominations that have been sent to the Senate.

Volvo Cars India Elevates Jyoti Malhotra as its New MD

  • Volvo Cars India appointed Jyoti Malhotra as its new Managing Director with effect from March 1, 2021.
  • Malhotra, who currently serves as the Director of Sales and Marketing, would be the first Indian to head the company in India.
  • Malhotra succeeds Charles Frump who has been at the helm since October 2017.
  • Frump has completed a successful tenure in India and is moving over to another global assignment. 

Rashmi Samant, First Indian Female President of Oxford University Student Union

  • Rashmi Samant has made history after she became the first Indian woman to be elected president of the Oxford University Student Union (SU), on a manifesto promising syllabus decolonization and decarbonizing the world-famous institution.
  • Samant, a graduate student reading for an M.Sc. in energy systems, with a focus on sustainability, at Linacre College at the university, scored a landslide win in the election earlier this week when she received 1,966 of the 3,708 votes cast for the post amid a large turnout.
  • The Manipal Institute of Technology, Karnataka, a student's Indian roots were referenced in her manifesto as she highlighted the need for greater "decolonization and inclusivity" on campus in the Oxford SU leadership election.

TMC MP Dinesh Trivedi Resigns from Rajya Sabha

  • In a dramatic turn of events in the Rajya Sabha, former Union Minister for Railways and Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha member Dinesh Trivedi, during his speech on the discussion on the budget, said that he was resigning from the Rajya Sabha saying he had reached an inflection point and that he was "feeling suffocated."
  • Trivedi said that he was forced to make a decision, and had to follow his "conscience" after looking at "the kind of violence taking place in his state" of West Bengal and that he would continue to work for "Bengal and the country."
  • Trivedi, who has been with the TMC since 1998, was both Union Minister for Railways and Union Minister for State for Health and Family Welfare, a member of parliament from Barrackpore, and then a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Sprinter Hima Das to be Appointed DSP by Assam Government

  • Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in a meeting Council of Ministers (CoM) at Janata Bhawan, Guwahati decided to appoint ace sprinter Hima Das as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the state. The cabinet also amended the integrated sports policy of the state for the appointment of sportspersons as Class-I and Class-II officers in different departments of the state government. 
  • She became the first Indian woman and also the first-ever Indian athlete to win a gold medal in any format of a global track event at the IAAF World U20 Championships when she clocked a speed of 51.46 seconds. Das had clinched five gold medals in 2019.

Aditya Mittal Appointed ArcelorMittal CEO

  • ArcelorMittal, one of the world's biggest steel producers, announced that Aditya Mittal would take over as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) from his father, Lakshmi Mittal, who would take on the mantle of executive chairman.
  • Aditya Mittal was previously the president and chief financial officer (CFO) of the company, and CEO of its European arm.
  • Lakshmi Mittal, who founded the company in 1976, will continue to lead the board of directors and work together with the CEO and management team, while Aditya will run the company's day-to-day affairs.

Bollywood Actor Rajiv Kapoor Passes Away

  • Bollywood actor and Raj Kapoor's son Rajiv Kapoor passed away. 
  • Rajiv Kapoor was a part of Bollywood's Kapoor clan. He was the brother of Randhir Kapoor, Rima Kapoor, Ritu Nanda, and late Rishi Kapoor.
  • Rajiv Kapoor made his acting debut in 1983 with Ek Jaan Hain Hum. He was seen as the leading actor in father Raj Kapoor's last directorial venture Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985). His most notable being Aasmaan (1984), Lover Boy (1985), Zabardast (1985) and Hum To Chale Pardes (1988).
  • His last film appearance was in Zimmedaar (1990) after which he turned to producing and directing films.

US University Recognises Sri Sri Ravi Shankar as Global Citizenship Ambassador

  •  Indian spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravishankar has been recognised as a Global Citizenship Ambassador by a prominent American university in recognition of his pioneering work as peacemaker, humanitarian, spiritual teacher and global interfaith leader.
  • The Northeastern University Center for Spirituality, Dialogue and Service honoured him as its inaugural Global Citizenship Ambassador last week.
  • The university is a global leader in experiential education and research with campuses around the world and is home to students from over 100 countries. It is ranked among the top 50 in the US and has one of the three largest international student populations.

IndiGo Appoints Jiten Chopra as CFO

  • Low-cost airline IndiGo appointed Jiten Chopra as its chief financial officer (CFO), effective February 21, 2021, and will succeed Aditya Pande, who is leaving the company to pursue other interests.
  • Chopra will report to IndiGo's whole-time director and CEO Ronojoy Dutta. He joined the airline in February 2020 as head of governance, risk, and compliance.
  • Prior to joining IndiGo, he spent 25 years working at BSR & Co (KPMG) in audit and risk management, business development, operations, and transaction services.

Google Cloud Appoints Bikram Singh Bedi as Managing Director for India

  • Google Cloud announced the appointment of Bikram Singh Bedi as the Managing Director for its India business.
  • He succeeded Karan Bajwa, who was elevated as Vice President for Asia Pacific region last month.
  • Bedi, a senior leader with over 26 years of leadership experience, will be responsible for leading Google Cloud's sales and operations teams in this dynamic market.
