India, France, UAE Strengthen Defence Ties with Desert Knight Air Combat Exercise

  • India, France and the UAE held a major air combat exercise, 'Desert Knight,' over the Arabian Sea. The operation aimed to enhance trilateral defence cooperation and foster better interoperability among their air forces during complex combat scenarios.
  • Spanning three days, the combat drills featured India's Su-30MKI and Jaguar jets, France's Rafale fighters, and the UAE's F-16 aircraft. The exercise included complex aerial manoeuvres and mission scenarios. Indian Air Force (IAF) jets launched from bases along India's western front, while French and UAE aircraft operated from the Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE.
  • This marks the second Desert Knight exercise, following the first session in January this year (2024).

CCS Clears Rs. 20,000 crore Make in India Projects for Su-30 Fighter Jets, 100 K-9 Howitzers

  • In a major success for Make in India in defence sector, the Cabinet Committee on Security cleared two major projects worth around Rs. 20,000 crore for 12 Su-30 MKI fighter jets for the Indian Air Force and 100 K-9 Vajra Self-propelled howitzers for the Indian Army.
  • The 12 SU-30MKI jets for the Indian Air Force would be licensed manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at its Nashik facility and cost around Rs. 13,000 crore.
  • The order for 100 K-9 self-propelled howitzers to be made by Larsen and Toubro at Hazira in Gujarat is a repeat order as already 100 of them have been inducted into the Army.

BEML Bags Defence Ministry Contract for High Mobility Vehicles

  • State-owned BEML Ltd secured a Rs. 136-crore contract for the supply of indigenously designed High Mobility Vehicles (HMV) 8x8. These vehicles will play a pivotal role in the Battle Field Surveillance System (BFSS) project, reinforcing India's defence capabilities and advancing the government's vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
  • The PSU has been at the forefront of India's defence manufacturing sector, delivering advanced solutions such as rocket and missile launchers, Armoured Recovery and Repair Vehicles (ARRV), High Mobility All-Terrain Vehicles for radar and communication systems and tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

Delhi and Moscow to Ink $4bn Deal to Boost India's Air Defence against China

  • India may soon ink a massive multibillion-dollar deal with Russia to boost its air defence infrastructure. According to reports, New Delhi is in advanced talks with Moscow to acquire $4 billion 'Voronezh' series radar, which can be deployed to monitor and detect aerial threats such as ballistic missiles, fighter jets, and ICBMs. Its 8,000-kilometre-range would allow India to detect any air threat from anywhere in China, South and Central Asia, and most of the Indian Ocean region.
  • The advanced radars are manufactured by Russia's Almaz-Antey Corporation, a specialist of the production of anti-aircraft missile systems and radars.

Indian Navy Commissions INS Tushil at Russia's Kaliningrad

  • The Indian Navy commissioned its latest multi-role stealth guided missile frigate, INS Tushil, at Kaliningrad, Russia, in a ceremony presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, as the Chief Guest, and many high ranking Indian Russian government and defence officials.
  • INS Tushil is an upgraded Krivak III class frigates of the Project 1135.6, of which six are already in service - three Talwar class ships, built at Baltisky shipyard, St. Petersburg, and three follow-on Teg class ships, built at Yantar shipyard, Kaliningrad.
  • INS Tushil, the seventh in the series, is the first of the two upgraded additional follow-on ships the contract for which was signed in October 2016 between JSC Rosoboronexport, Indian Navy and the Government of India.
