Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief Praveen Sood got a one-year extension, with the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approving it.
According to reports, the three-member selection panel that met at the Prime Minister's Office deliberated on the names of a few senior IPS officers, including Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora. However, no consensus could be reached, following which the members agreed to extend Sood's tenure by a year. The deliberations come ahead of the scheduled end of Sood's two-year fixed tenure on May 25.
A 1986-batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre, Sood was appointed as CBI director on May 25, 2023.
International Maritime Defence Exhibition (IMDEX) - 2025
Indian Naval Ship INS Kiltan was in Singapore and participated in the 9th IMDEX Asia 2025, which concluded on May 8, at the Changi Exhibition Centre in Singapore.
The visit was part of the Indian Navy's operational deployment and underscored the robust maritime partnership between India and Singapore.
The ships' crew engaged in a series of bilateral/ multilateral activities, including professional exchanges with the Republic of Singapore Navy and other participating navies of IMDEX Asia 2025.
These engagements aimed to strengthen naval cooperation, enhance interoperability, and promote mutual understanding between the two navies.

Operation Sindoor: India Strikes Back in Pakistan and PoK
In a significant military development, the Indian Armed Forces on Wednesday launched 'Operation Sindoor', a series of precision strikes on terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). The operation comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, triggering widespread outrage and demands for decisive action.
According to a formal release by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the strikes targeted a total of nine locations believed to house active terrorist infrastructure involved in planning and executing attacks against India.
India-Maldives Strengthen Defence Ties through HADR Exercise
In a move showcasing India's deepening regional defence ties and commitment to humanitarian collaboration, INS Sharda reached the Maldives' Maafilaafushi Atoll on May 4, 2025, and is participating in a joint Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) exercise. This bilateral exercise with the Maldives' National Defence Force (MNDF) runs until May 10 and underscores India's strategic vision for maritime cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
The activities included in the exercise are: joint drills and rescue simulations, medical aid provision and team mobilisation, and community engagement and capacity building.

DRDO Successfully Conducts Maiden Trial of Stratospheric Airship Platform
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the maiden flight-trial of its Stratospheric Airship Platform at the Sheopur trial site in Madhya Pradesh.
The airship, developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, ascended to an altitude of approximately 17 km, carrying an instrumental payload. The flight, which lasted for about 62 minutes, marks a significant step in the development of high-altitude, lighter-than-air platforms.
BSF to Get 16 New Battalions, 2 Field HQs for Pakistan, Bangladesh Borders
The Border Security Force is all set to get the government's final nod to raise 16 more battalions, comprising around 17,000 troopers, and set up two forward headquarters for its western and eastern commands guarding the Pakistan and Bangladesh frontiers, respectively. The plan has already received an in-principle approval.

IAF Gets New Vice Chief, Tri-services New CISC, Army New Northern Army Commander
Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma took over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the strategically crucial Northern Command, following the retirement of Lieutenant General M. V. Suchindra Kumar.
Headquartered at Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir, the Northern Command is tasked with operational responsibilities along both Pakistan and China borders, as well as counter-terrorism operations.
In the Indian Air Force, Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari was appointed as Vice Chief, succeeding Air Marshal S. P. Dharkar, who superannuated.
The third top-level change was in the tri-services structure. Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, was appointed the new Chief of Integrated Defence Staff to the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee (CISC). He replaced Lt Gen J. P. Mathew, who retired.
