IAF's Only C-17 Woman Pilot Brings Back Indians from Sudan under Operation Kaveri

Flight Lieutenant Har Raj Kaur Boparai, IAF's first and only woman pilot of the heavy-lift transport aircraft C-17 Globemaster, took part in Operation Kaveri, India's complex mission to bring back its citizens safely from the strife-torn Sudan. The C-17 Globemaster is the largest aircraft asset of the Indian Air Force.
Flt Lt H. R. K. Boparai is the first and only woman officer of the IAF who's flown the C-17. She is the only woman officer in the aircraft's squadron.

India to host SCO Defence Ministers meeting this week

India will host Defence Ministers from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) grouping, including China's Li Shangfu and Russia's Sergei Shoigu,.India's Ministry of Defence said on April 25.
While Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif is expected to join the conference virtually and won't join in person, a Pakistani Defence Ministry delegation arrived in India for the SCO Working Group meeting on Wednesday, ahead of the Ministerial meeting.
As Chair this year of the SCO, which includes Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Pakistan besides India, New Delhi will be hosting the visiting Defence Ministers from member countries, as well as from observers Belarus and Iran.Ahead of SCO Defence Ministers meet, India-China hold 18th Corps Commander talks.
Beijing announced that the newly appointed State Councillor and Defence Minister General Li Shangfu will visit India on April 27 and 28, and also hold bilateral meetings.
This will be the first high-level military visit from China since the start of the LAC crisis in April 2020. On Sunday, both sides held the 18th round of military talks between Corps Commanders, agreeing that restoring peace along the border areas would "enable progress" in recently strained relations

SIPRI report on Trends in World Military Expenditure 2022 released

A report on Trends in World Military Expenditure 2022, published by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, stated that total global military expenditure increased by 3.7% in real terms in 2022 to reach a new high of $2240 billion.
The three largest spenders in 2022 are the USA, China, and Russia, accounting for 56% of the total world.
The US remains by far the world's biggest military spender.India's spending of $81.4 billion was the fourth highest in the world

Wing Commander Deepika Misra Becomes 1st Woman IAF Officer to Get Gallantry Award

Wing Commander Deepika Misra became the first woman Air Force officer to receive a gallantry medal. President had conferred Vayu Seva Medal for gallantry on her at Independence Day last (2022) year and she received the medal from Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari at an investiture ceremony held in New Delhi in April 2023. Wing Commander Deepika Mishra was detailed to undertake Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations in response to flash floods in northern Madhya Pradesh in August 2021. Braving deteriorating weather, strong winds and the near sunset time, she was the first and only respondent to reach the affected area the same evening. Her efforts helped in saving 47 lives

Solar Industries to Supply UAV 'Nagastra' To Indian Army

Solar Industries Nagpur bagged an order to supply unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) 'Nagastra' to the Indian Army, beating competitors from Israel and Poland. A Solar Industries official said with government's initiative to bring Atmanirbharta in ammunition and defence systems, the first indigenous Loiter Munition (LM), Nagastra-1, has been designed and developed by Economics Explosives Ltd (EEL), a 100 per cent subsidiary of Solar Industries Nagpur, in association with Z-Motion, Bangalore.
A model of 'Nagastra -1' loitering munition was recently displayed in the Army Commanders conference held in New Delhi.
The company said that Nagastra -1 having an indigenous content of more than 75 per cent has many world class features.
It said that in a 'Kamikaze mode' it can neutralise any hostile threat with GPS enabled precision strike with an accuracy of 2 m. The fixed wing electric UAV has an endurance of 60 min with a man-in-loop range of 15 km and autonomous mode range of 30 km.

India Successfully Tests Sea-based Ballistic Missile Interceptor, Joins Elite Club

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy successfully conducted a maiden flight trial of a sea-based endo-atmospheric interceptor missile off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal. As per the defense ministry, the purpose of the trial was to engage and neutralize a hostile ballistic missile threat, thereby elevating the country into the elite club of nations having Naval Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) capability.
Prior to this, DRDO has successfully demonstrated land-based BMD system with capability to neutralize ballistic missile threats, emerging from adversaries.

Two-day Coastal Security Exercise Held to Evaluate Threats from Sea

A two-day coastal security exercise -- 'Sagar Kavach' -- was conducted off the coast of Kerala and Mahe to evaluate threats from the sea and validate the effectiveness of the security mechanisms. As part of the exercise, real time threats and contingencies were simulated to assess the preparedness level of the coastal security agencies.
"Enhanced security measures were instituted and the entire coastline was kept under strict surveillance and monitoring. Deployment of coastal security apparatus including ships, patrol crafts and aircraft of the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and other maritime security agencies were undertaken in the territorial waters and adjoining seas.
The exercise was carried out under the aegis of Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, who is also designated as the Commander-in-Chief, Coastal Defence (South).
The exercise was conducted in coordination with all coastal security stakeholders such as Indian Coast Guard, Coastal Police, Customs, Fisheries, Minor Ports, Intelligence agencies, Cochin Port and also the fishing and coastal communities.

IAF to Get First C-295 Plane in September

Spain will deliver the first military transport aircraft C-295 to the IAF in September.
The first lot of IAF pilots will commence training in May at an Airbus facility in Seville, Spain.
The MoD had, in 2021, signed a contract with Airbus for 56 aircraft at a cost of Rs. 21,000 crore.
Airbus will deliver 16 planes in a flyaway condition within 48 months of signing of the contract.
The remaining 40 aircraft will be manufactured in India by Airbus-Tata consortium.
All 56 aircraft will be installed with indigenous electronic warfare suite.

Vice Admiral Swaminathan New Controller of Personnel Services

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan assumed charge as Controller of Personnel Services.
As per reports, Swaminathan, who was commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare.
A recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, the Admiral has held several key operational, staff and training appointments in his naval career. The charges held by him include the command of missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash; the missile corvette INS Kulish; the guided missile destroyer INS Mysore; and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.
