ISRO Plans to Return to Mars and Work with Japan to Examine the Moon's Dark Side

  • The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) turned its attention to Venus and is collaborating with Japan to examine the moon's dark side, following trips to the moon and Mars. ISRO's next mission at the Akash Tattva conference was that the space agency also intended to send a probe to Mars.
  • A Japanese rocket will launch an ISRO-built lunar lander and rover into orbit with a planned landing site close to the south pole of the moon.
  • The rover will then move to the area of the moon that is always in shadow and never receives sunlight.

SpaceX Launches World's most Powerful Rocket 'Falcon Heavy' on Space Force Mission

  • SpaceX's Falcon Heavy, the world's most-powerful active rocket, lifted off for the first time in more than three years through dense fog at Florida's Cape Canaveral, with Elon Musk's company sending satellites into orbit for the U.S. Space Force.
  • The rocket system, consisting of three Falcon 9 boosters strapped side-by-side, took off from a SpaceX launch pad, with two satellites from the Space Force and a group of smaller satellites bound for orbit.
  • This mission marked the first use of the rocket by the Space Force, a U.S. military branch established under former President Donald Trump to oversee much of the Pentagon's defense activities in space.

Astronomers Discover Three Large Near-Earth Asteroids

  • Astronomers using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) on the Víctor M. Blanco 4-m telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory have discovered two rare Atira/Apohele asteroids, which have orbits completely interior to Earth's orbit, and one Apollo-type asteroid that crosses Earth's orbit. The latter is likely the largest Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) discovered in about eight years.

Yogi Adityanath Inaugurates North India's First Data Centre at Greater Noida

  • Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated North India's first hyper-scale data centre Yotta Yotta D1 built at the cost of Rs. 5,000 crore and spread over an area of 3,00,000 square feet at the upcoming Data Centre Park in Greater Noida. Memorandums of Understanding worth Rs. 39,000 crore were also signed between the Yogi Government and Hiranandani Group to be spent on projects in the next five years on the occasion.
  • The data centre would increase the data storage capacity of the country, which until now stood at two per cent only despite the fact that 1.5 billion mobile phones and 650 million internet users in the world are from India using 20 per cent of data. Yet for storage of data, we had to look for centres abroad.
  • The Data Centre Policy was notified in 2021. Under the policy, the work of setting up of 04 Data Centre Parks by various investors is currently under process with an investment of more than Rs. 15,950 crore. These include M/s NIDP Developers Pvt Ltd of Hiranandani Group (Rs. 9134.90 crore), M/s NTT Global Centers and Cloud Infrastructure India Pvt Ltd of Japan (Rs. 1687 crore), and two projects of Adani Enterprises Ltd of Rs. 2414 crore and Rs. 2713 crore. With the start of these projects, thousands of people would also get employment.

China Launches 2nd Lab Module Mengtian for its Space Station

  • China launched a lab module called Mengtian to be part of its space station currently under construction.
  • It was launched by Long March-5B Y4, one of China's biggest rockets from Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site on the coast of the southern island province of Hainan.
  • Scientific equipment in the Mengtian module, the second lab component of China's under-construction space station, will be used for studying microgravity and carrying out experiments in fluid physics, materials science, combustion science and fundamental physics.
  • Wentian lab which was sent earlier focused more on biological and space life sciences.
  • Also, the Mengtian carried the world's first space-based set of cold atomic clocks consisting of a hydrogen clock, a rubidium clock and an optical clock.

Google Buys Artificial Intelligence Avatar Startup 'Alter' for $100 mn

  • Tech giant Google has acquired Alter, an artificial intelligence (AI) avatar startup that was working on using AI to generate avatars for social media users and brands to express their virtual identity. 
  • According to TechCrunch, Google buys the startup for about $100 million in an effort to improve its content game and compete with TikTok. 
  • The acquisition was completed about two months ago, but the company is yet to make a public announcement.
  • Alter started as Facemoji, a platform that offered plug-and-play technology for helping game and App developers add avatar systems to their Apps. 
  • Among its investors are Play Ventures, Roosh Ventures and Twitter, which invested $3 million in the startup. 
  • Later Facemoji rebranded as Alter.

RIL Becomes First Indian Company to Post Earnings Call on Metaverse

  • Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) posted the proceedings of its Q2 FY 2022-23 earnings call on the metaverse. 
  • This is the first time in the history of corporate India that a company has used metaverse to engage with its stakeholders.
  • The RIL metaverse was produced in partnership with GMetri, a no-code metaverse creation platform. 
  • One doesn't need to wear an AR/VR headgear to access it. Using it, analysts across the world tracking the company can toggle with slides and graphics placed on different screens as per the multiple buckets in the results presentation. 
  • They can also download the RIL Q2 22-23 media release and the transcript of the media and analyst call in PDF formats.
