ISRO Brings Down Decommissioned Weather Satellite Megha-Tropiques-1

  • Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) brought down the decommissioned weather satellite Megha-Tropiques-1 in a controlled manner and burned up in the atmosphere.
  • The ISRO carried out a series of 20 manoeuvres from August 2022 to slowly lower the satellite's orbit, expending the 120 kg fuel that remained unutilised even at the end of the mission life.
  • Megha-Tropiques-1 was launched into Low Earth Orbit (LEO) on October 12, 2011, as a joint mission developed by ISRO and the French space agency, CNES, for tropical weather and climate studies. The mission was initially planned to operate for three years, but it was extended later as it continued to deliver key data about the climate for a decade.

  • The fifth layer is made of iron and nickel, the same materials that comprise the rest of the inner core.
  • The team of researchers from the Australian National University measured the speeds at which these seismic waves penetrate and pass through the Earth's inner core. The team believes that this has presented evidence of a distinct layer inside Earth known as the innermost inner core.
