India, Maldives Sign Peering Agreement for Cooperation in Field of Education

  • The External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid acknowledged strides made in fields of capacity building and training as the two countries inked an agreement paving the way for connectivity between India's National Knowledge Network and the Maldives' Higher Education Network.
  • National Knowledge Network is a multi-gigabit national research and education network, whose purpose is to provide a unified high speed network backbone for educational and research institutions in India. The network is managed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC).

Common University Entrance Test officially Accepted by Jamia Millia Islamia

  • CUET in Jamia Millia Islamia: Jamia Millia Islamia(JMI) will adopt the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admitting students to undergraduate programmes for the 2022-23 academic session. It was decided in a meeting attended by the top officials of the university that admissions for selected undergraduate courses will be done through CUET. The university has communicated to the University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Testing Agency (NTA) about the same.

Not Cut-offs, Clearing Class 12, CUET Now Enough to Secure Admissions to DU

  • From the academic year 2022-23, students will only need to clear Class 12 and CUET to be eligible for admissions to Delhi University (DU).
  • The proposal to consider passing marks in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admissions, and not the cut-offs as earlier, was passed by the varsity's executive council during its meeting.
  • The university also accepted the proposal to set up Delhi School of Analytics (DSA) under Institutes of Eminence.
  • The DSA will offer short and long-term certificate courses, diploma and degree programmes that will enhance the business analytical skills of students.

IBM India to Impart Digital Skill to 12,000 Girl Students in Nagaland

  • IBM India announced a collaboration with the Nagaland School Education department to introduce digital powered training in more than 250 secondary and higher secondary schools across 15 districts in the northeastern state.
  • The programme IBM Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) for girls programme aims to provide 21st-century skills to more than 12,000 girls.
  • The curriculum will align and supplement the state's efforts towards quality education. This programme will help enable more than 12,000 girls studying between 8th to 10th grade with access to digital fluency, coding skills training, 21st century skills, including life and career skills.
  • The IBM Stem for girls programme, currently running in 12 states that include Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Nagaland.

IIM-Sambalpur to Develop Entrepreneurship Skills among Tribals

  • The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Sambalpur, signed an agreement with a research institute to develop entrepreneurship skills among tribal youths and provide them with quality education.
  • The memorandum of understanding with the Center for Adivasi Research and Development was signed recently for multi-modal initiatives and projects on teaching, skilling, training and global outreach.

IIT Guwahati Hosts Chair of 'Jal Jeevan Mission' for Water Treatment Technology

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, established the 'Chair of Jal Jeevan Mission' for Water Treatment Technology. The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2019 from the ramparts of the Red Fort. It aims to enable every rural household to have a Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) by 2024.
  • The institute appointed Professor Mihir Kumar Purkait, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati, as the first occupant of this Chair. The tenure of the Professor's Chair is for five years.

British Council Announces PG Scholarships for Indian Students and English Teachers

  • The British Council announced a new set of postgraduate (PG) scholarships for Indians across various fields of study for the academic year 2022-23. The council, in collaboration with the UK government's GREAT Britain Campaign and in partnership with UK universities, announced 20 GREAT scholarships for students from India, across 16 UK universities, in a variety of subjects like business, finance, humanities, psychology entrepreneurship, design, marketing, HR and music.
