Krithi Karanth First Indian Woman to be Chosen as a 'Wild Innovator'

  • Dr. Krithi K Karanth, Chief Conservation Scientist at Bengaluru-based Centre for Wildlife Studies (CWS), was chosen as the first Indian and Asian woman for the 2021 'WILD Innovator Award'.
  • This award given by the 'WILD ELEMENTS Foundation' brings together a coalition of innovators, advocates and partners to "disrupt the status quo and identify solutions to global sustainability and conservation," a CWS statement said on Tuesday.
  • The Foundation's distinctive approach to addressing climate change is the "Power of Three," recognising the interconnectedness of animalkind, humankind, and plantkind for the future planetary wellness of our shared home.

Uttar Pradesh Wins E-panchayat Award

  • The Uttar Pradesh government won the 'E-Panchayat Puraskar 2021', ranking first in Category I. It was followed by Assam and Chhattisgarh at the second position, while Odisha and Tamil Nadu stood third. Every year, the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj awards those states, which ensure maximum use of information technology to keep a tab on the work done by gram panchayats.

Zhao First Asian Woman to Win Best Director Oscar

  • The Chinese born film maker Chloe Zhao has become the first Asian woman to win the Best director at the Academy Awards. She won the award for her film Nomadland.
  • Zhao was born in China and went to a boarding school in London. She then moved to Los Angeles where she completed her high school. Her debut film was Songs My Brothers Taught me. It was premiered at Sundance Film Festival. Her second film was The Rider. It received nominations at the Independent Spirit Award for the Best Film and Best Director.
  • Nomadland won three major awards namely Best Director, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Picture. The film is about a woman who leaves town after her husband dies. She also becomes houseless as sole industry closes down. She then lives in a van and travels around the US.

Volkswagen ID.4 Wins World Car of the Year Crown

  • Volkswagen ID.4 received its biggest push in the company's bid to challenge the might of Tesla when the electric vehicle was crowned as the 2021 World Car of The Year. This is for the first time that an electric car from Volkswagen has managed to win the title although previous years have seen other models taking top honours on several occasions - Golf in 2009 and 2013, Polo in 2010 and up! in 2011.
  • Volkswagen ID.4 managed to beat a number of other contenders en route to the title and may once again underline the German car maker's determination to play a bigger role in the world of electric mobility.
  • Volkswagen is looking at delivering around 150,000 ID.4 units across the world this year. This is part of the company's strategy to accelerate production and sales of electric vehicles in several countries.

Saudi Activist Wins Top Europe Rights Award

  • Saudi activist Loujain al-Hathloul was awarded a top European rights prize on Monday in recognition of her fight for women's rights in the kingdom, including her efforts to end a ban on women driving.
  • The Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize, named after the former Czech dissident and later President, is awarded annually for civil society action in defence of human rights by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
  • Ms. Hathloul "is one of the leaders of the Saudi feminist movement, having campaigned to end the male guardianship system, as well as the Saudi ban on women driving, and for greater protection for women facing abuse in the Kingdom.

Filmmaker Roberto Benigni to Receive Venice Film Festival's Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Oscar-winning Italian director-actor Roberto Benigni of "Life is Beautiful" fame has been honoured with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement of the 78th Venice International Film Festival, announced the organisers.
  • The decision to honour Benigni, a two-time Oscar winner was made by the board of La Biennale di Venezia. The writer-director-actor's name was proposed by the Festival''s Director, Alberto Barbera.
  • Venice Film Festival runs from September 1-11.
