Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank Receives 'International Invincible Gold Medal'

The "International Invincible Gold Medal" of this year has been conferred on Union Education Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.
Dr. Tony Nader, president of Maharshi Organisation worldwide, said that Nishank has been recognised for his extraordinary commitment and outstanding service to humanity through his writings, social and illustrious public life. The decision was made after due deliberations by a high-powered committee duly constituted under the leadership of Dr. Tony Nader who is the global head of the organisation.
The honour was announced at a two-day virtual session which was attended by representatives from over 110 countries. The award will be formally presented to the union minister on Guru Purnima this year (2021).

Kobe Bryant Inducted Posthumously Into Basketball Hall of Fame

Los Angeles Lakers icon Kobe Bryant was inducted posthumously into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday part of a star-studded group that also included Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett. Bryant was inducted as part of the Class of 2020, almost 16 months after he and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna were killed in a helicopter crash along with seven others in southern California. Bryant's wife, Vanessa Bryant, took the podium.
Bryant and the others were voted into the Hall of Fame as part of the 2020 class, but the formal induction ceremony was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Los Angeles Lakers great Bryant retired in 2016; he was the NBA Most Valuable Player in 2008 and a five-time NBA champion.

Marina Abramovic Wins Spanish Arts Prize

A Spanish foundation awarded Serbian performance artist Marina Abramovic one of the European nation's most prestigious awards for the fine arts.
The jury that decides the Princess of Asturias Awards said that the work of the 74-year-old Abramovic revealed "a sensorial and spiritual component hitherto unknown."
The 50,000-euro ($56,700) award is one of eight prizes, ranging from the arts, social sciences and sports, handed out annually by a foundation named for Spanish Crown Princess Leonor.

Andrea Meza of Mexico Crowned 69th Miss Universe

Andrea Meza from Mexico was crowned as the 69th Miss Universe. The pageant was held on May 16, in the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood Hotel or famously known as the Guitar hotel in Florida. Meza was preceded by Miss Universe Zozobini Tunzi of South Africa.
Andrea had to compete with 73 other gorgeous women from all over the world for the coveted title out of which Miss India Adeline Castelino was also being considered as a strong contender. Castelino made it to the top five along with Miss Brazil, Miss Peru and Miss Dominican Republic. Andrea made history with her win as she became the third Mexican woman to be crowned as Miss Universe.

Whitely Awards 2021

Whitley Awards are called "Green Oscar". In 2021, the Whitley Award was won by Nuklu Phom of Nagaland. He is the only Indian to receive the award.
Whitley Awards are presented annually by the Whitley Fund for Nature. It is presented to recognise grass root level conservation leaders.
It involves process of reference, application and interview.
The Whitley Fund for Nature was established by Edward Whitley in 1994. It has so far given 16 million pounds to support the work of two hundred environmental heroes.
Nuklu Phom is creating "Biodiversity Peace Corridors". The main objective of the extend the "Yaongyimchen Community Biodiversity Area".
Apart from conservation of wildlife and environmental protection he also extends his works to health, education and micro finance.
Lemasachenlok Society was founded by him. It has worked towards sensitising the locals about the Amur Falcons. It has set up three reserves that helped to increase the number of roosting Falcons.
Nuklu Phom is populary known as the "Amur Falcon Man of Nagaland".

IREDA Wins "Green Urja Award"

Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd (IREDA) was conferred with the "Green Urja Award" for being the Leading Public Institution in the Financing Institution for Renewable Energy this year by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC). IREDA got the award for the pivotal and developmental role it plays in Green Energy Financing.
The award was received by Shri Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), IREDA from Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General, International Solar Alliance in presence of Shri Anil Razdan, Chairman, ICC National Expert Committee on Energy in a virtual ceremony.
Despite the pandemic time, IREDA ended the year 2020-21 on a strong note and disbursed the second-highest (from the date of inception) amount of loan amounting to Rs. 8827 crore, which indicates that IREDA has the ability to translate this problem into an opportunity.

Nutrition Expert of Indian Descent Wins World Food Prize

Dr. Shakuntala Haraksingh Thilsted, a global nutrition expert of Indian descent, won the prestigious 2021 World Food Prize for her groundbreaking research in developing holistic, nutrition-sensitive approaches to aquaculture and food systems.
World Food Prize Foundation President Barbara Stinson announced the award, which is also referred to as the Nobel Prize for Food and Agriculture.
The award also carries a cash prize of USD 250,000.
US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, US Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack and UN Nutrition Chair Naoko Yamamoto delivered individual remarks at the announcement.
Thilsted's trailblazing research on small native fish species in Bangladesh led to the development of nutrition-sensitive approaches to aquatic food systems at all levels, from the farm to food processing to final consumers, resulting in improved diets for millions of the most vulnerable people in Asia and Africa, the World Food Prize said on its website.
