Delhi Boy Bags US National Science Bee Competition Award

Eight-year-old Delhi boy Advay Misra, who was named one of the 'brightest students in the world' by the John Hopkins University earlier this year, has now bagged the second position in the US National Science Bee 2021 competition.
The National Science Bee is a buzzer-based science competition for individual students, with questions ranging from biology, chemistry, physics, earth science, astronomy, mathematics, and other scientific fields. It includes a written qualifying exam and buzzer-based regional and national championships.

UNESCO Literacy Prize Awarded to NIOS

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) of India won the prestigious UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize 2021 for 'enabling education of persons with disabilities through technology-enabled inclusive learning materials, with a specific focus on Indian Sign language-based content'.
On behalf of NIOS, professor Saroj Sharma, Chairperson, NIOS received the international Literacy prize and thanked UNESCO for recognising the efforts and innovations of NIOS in the field of education and literacy.

Booker Prize Shortlist Unveiled

The 2021 Booker Prize shortlist, unveiled at a virtual event in London, includes six finalists for the prestigious award for works of fiction, with an equal male-female author split.
Indian-origin British novelist Sunjeev Sahota, who had made the longlist with his acclaimed immigrant tale 'China Room', missed out in the final running.
Sri Lankan Tamil author Anuk Arudpragasam made the cut with 'A Passage North'; South African author Damon Galgut for 'The Promise'; Americans Patricia Lockdwood for 'No One is Talking About this', Richard Powers for 'Bewilderment', and Maggie Shipstead for 'Great Circle'; and British-Somali author Nadifa Mohamed 'The Fortune Men'.
The shortlist was chosen from 158 novels published in the UK or Ireland between October 2020 and September 2021.

UN's World Tourism Organization Award

Three Indian villages have been nominated in the Best Tourism Village category for the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Award. Madhya Pradesh's Ladhpura Khas village that is situated near the town of Orchha, is one such village. The other two villages are Meghalaya's Kongthong village, and Telangana's Pochampally village.
Indian village tourism has taken off ever since the nation's Rural Tourism Project began across states. The idea behind such a project is to give shape to the concept of village tourism, which is not prevalent in the country.

French Abortion Drama 'Happening' Tops Venice Film Festival

Audrey Diwan's 1960s abortion drama 'L'Evenement' (Happening) won the Golden Lion at the 78th Venice International Film Festival, while the runner up honour went to Paolo Sorrentino's semi-autobiographical 'The Hand of God'.
Ms. Diwan's film about a French college student who finds herself with an unwanted pregnancy was the unanimous choice from the prestigious jury that included Oscar winners Bong Joon Ho and Chloé Zhao.
The competition this year was robust, including well-received films like Jane Campion's 'The Power of the Dog', Pedro Almodóvar's 'Parallel Mothers', Maggie Gyllenhaal's 'The Lost Daughter' and 'The Hand of God'. Twenty-one films were vying for the prize, which has become a promising early indicator of a film's Oscars prospects.
