World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

  • World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is observed every year on 15th June to raise voice for the elders who are abused and suffered.
  • This day was officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011 following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) by passing UN resolution 66/127. According to the UN, around 1in 6 older people experience some form of abuse. It is predicted to rise as populations age worldwide. No doubt elder abuse may lead to serious physical injuries and long-term psychological consequences. It is a global social issue which affects the health and human rights of millions of older persons around the world.
  • The main objective of this day is to provide an opportunity for communities around the globe to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by creating awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect.
  • The theme for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2020 is "Building Strong Supports for Elders".

World Blood Donor Day

  • Every year on 14th June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event was organised for the first time in 2005, by a joint initiative of World Health Organisation, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gifts of blood. World Blood Donor Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day, and World AIDS Day.
  • World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every year by people around the world on June 14. It is celebrated on the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner on June 14, 1868.
  • World Blood Donor Day brings a precious opportunity to all donors to celebrate and commemorate the birthday anniversary of Karl Landsteiner (a scientist who won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of the ABO blood group system).
  • The theme for Blood Donation Day 2020 is 'Safe Blood Saves Lives'. The Slogan of "Blood Donation Day 2020" is 'Give Blood And Make The World A Healthier Place'.

International Albinism Awareness Day

  • International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) is celebrated annually on June 13 to celebrate the human rights of persons with albinism worldwide.
  • IAAD was first celebrated in 2016.
  • The theme for this year (2020) International Albinism Awareness Day is "Made To Shine". The theme was chosen to celebrate the achievements and successes of persons with albinism worldwide.

World Day Against Child Labour

  • World Day Against Child Labour 2020 focuses on the impact of crisis on child labour. The COVID-19 health pandemic and the resulting economic and labour market shock are having a huge impact on people's lives and livelihoods. Unfortunately, children are often the first to suffer. The crisis can push millions of vulnerable children into child labour. Already, there are an estimated 152 million children in child labour.
  • This year (2020), the World Day is conducted as a virtual campaign and is being organized jointly with the Global March Against Child Labour and the International Partnership for Cooperation on Child Labour in Agriculture (IPCCLA).
  • The International Labour Organisation (ILO), the United Nations body that regulates the world of work, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour.

World Brain Tumor Day

  • World Brain Tumor Day is observed on 8th June every year. German Brain Tumour Association (Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe e.V.), a non-profit organisation, first marked this day in the year 2000 to spread the awareness about the brain tumour among the general public. Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe was founded in 1998 and has more than 500 registered members from 14 nations.

World Oceans Day

  • World Oceans Day takes place annually on the 8th of June. The concept was originally proposed in 1992 by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC) at the Earth Summit – UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. World Oceans Day was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008.
  • The theme for World Oceans Day 2020 is "Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean".
