Germany Tests Warning Sirens For First Time Since End of Cold War

Germany carried out the first nationwide test of its civil alarm systems since the end of the Cold War, sounding several alarms. People also received emergency push notifications on their smartphones across the country.
The newly created National Warning Day, or Warntag, will now be observed every year on September 10 to inform the public about what to do in the backdrop of a national emergency.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Launches Aero India 2021 Website

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the website of Aero India 2021 in Delhi.
The 13th edition of Aero India-21 will be held at Air Force Station, Yelahanka, Bengaluru in Karnataka from February 3 to February 7, 2021.
The Aero India 2021 website will be a contactless online interface for Asia's largest aero show. It will host and stream all online services related to the event for both the exhibitors and visitors.

US Marks 9/11 Anniversary

Americans commemorated 9/11 as a new national crisis — the coronavirus pandemic — reconfigured anniversary ceremonies and a presidential campaign carved a path through the observances.
In New York, victims' relatives gathered for split-screen remembrances, one at the Sept. 11 memorial plaza at the World Trade Center and another on a nearby corner, set up by a separate organization.

The First International Day to Protect Education from Attack

On 9 September, the world observed the first International Day to Protect Education from Attack that was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly last May.
Global leaders and celebrities from all walks of life stepped up support for actions against attacks on education during the commemorative high-level virtual event organized by the State of Qatar, UNESCO, UNICEF and Education Above All Foundation.

World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day is an awareness day observed on 10th September every year, in order to provide worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicides, with various activities around the world since 2003. The International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) collaborates with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) to host World Suicide Prevention Day. In 2011 an estimated 40 countries held awareness events to mark the occasion. According to WHO's Mental health Atlas released in 2014, no low-income country reported having a national suicide prevention strategy, while less than 10% of lower-middle income countries, and almost a third of upper-middle and high-income countries had.
On its first event in 2003, the 1999 World Health Organisation's global suicide prevention initiative is mentioned with regards to the main strategy for its implementation, requiring:
1. "The organisation of global, regional and national multi-sectoral activities to increase awareness about suicidal behaviours and how to effectively prevent them."
2. "The strengthening of countries's capabilities to develop and evaluate national policies and plans for suicide prevention."
Each year World Suicide Prevention Day has a theme and the theme for 2020 is "Working Together to Prevent Suicide."

First World Solar Technology Summit

Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the first edition of the World Solar Technology Summit (WSTS) of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) with focus on new Technologies and Innovations in the field of Solar Power.
The World Solar Technology Summit (WSTS) was organised by ISA and FICCI
More than 26,000 participants from 149 countries joined the virtual Summit.
The Summit aimed at accelerating affordable and sustainable clean green energy by showcasing and deliberating on innovative state of the art next generation technologies in solar power.
WSTS assumes importance as its will enable:
India aims to achieve its ambitious target of having 100 GW of solar energy by 2022.
ISA to achieve its aim of creating a World Solar Bank with authorised capital of $15 billion to fund projects
The Summit included signing of four agreements between
ISA and International Institute of Refrigeration,
ISA and Global Green Growth Institute,
ISA and National Thermal Power Corporation,
A tripartite agreement between India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the World Bank and the International Solar Alliance.
ISA also launched a Journal on Solar Energy (I JOSE) that would help authors from across the globe to publish their articles on solar energy.

International Literacy Day

The 8th of September was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO in 1966 to remind the international community of the importance of literacy for individuals, communities and societies, and the need for intensified efforts towards more literate societies. The issue of literacy is a key component of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The UN's Sustainable Development Agenda, adopted by world leaders in September 2015, promotes universal access to quality education and learning opportunities throughout people's lives. Sustainable Development Goal 4 has as one of its targets ensuring all young people achieve literacy and numeracy and that adults, who lack these skills are given the opportunity to acquire them.
International Literacy Day was celebrated for the first time in 1967. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Celebrations take place in several countries.

First International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies

The first International Day of Clean Air for blue skies was commemorated around the world on 7th September, following the recognition by the United Nations General Assembly of the importance of clean air for the health and day-to-day lives of people.
In a message, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the dangers posed by air pollution and urged greater efforts to address it. He said that air pollution contributes to heart disease, strokes, lung cancer and other respiratory diseases. It also threatens the economy, food security and the environment.
He added that as the world recover from the coronavirus pandemic, more attention needs to be given to air pollution, which also increases the risks associated with COVID-19.
Mr. Guterres stressed on the need for dramatic and systemic changes, reinforced environmental standards, policies and laws that prevent emissions of air pollutants.
Globally, nine out of every ten people breathe unclean air, and air pollution causes an estimated seven million premature deaths every year, predominantly in low- and middle-income countries.
