World Theatre Day

  • World Theatre Day is an international observance celebrated on 27th March.
  • World Theatre Day was initiated in 1962 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is celebrated annually on 27 March by ITI Centres and the international theatre community. Various national and international theatre events are organized to mark this occasion.
  • World Theatre Day has been celebrated in many and varied ways by ITI Centers - of which there are now more than 90 throughout the world. Moreover, theatres, theatre professionals, theatre lovers, theatre universities, academies, and schools celebrate it as well.
  • The author of the Message of the World Theatre Day 2021 is Helen Mirren. She is one of the best-known and most respected actresses with an international career that spans stage, screen, and television and has won many awards for her powerful and versatile performances, including the Academy Award in 2007 for her performance in The Queen.

Centennial Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's First Visit to Odisha

  • A host of programmes marked the centennial anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's first visit to Odisha in Millennium city.
  • Gandhi had visited Odisha for the first time 100 years back, in 1921, and addressed a massive public meeting as part of his non-cooperation movement.
  • A commemorative postage stamp on '100 years of first visit of Mahatma Gandhi to Odisha' was released by Union Minister Sanjay Dhotre.

Dubai Hosts 4th Edition of the WION Global Summit

  • Dubai hosted the 4th edition of the WION Global Summit in March 2021, at the Oberoi. The day-long summit brought together thought leaders and global policymakers from around the world.
  • External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar graced the event as Chief Guest. India's envoy to the U.A.E. Pavan Kapoor delivered the welcome note on behalf of the host nation.
  • Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton, and Japan's minister of State for Defence, Yasuhide Nakayama delivered keynotes for various sessions.
  • The event had four sessions, on West Asia's changing geopolitics, the post-pandemic World order, the World economy, and the new digital reality, respectively.

World Tuberculosis Day

  • World Tuberculosis Day, observed on 24 March each year, is designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease. In 2018, 10 million people fell ill with TB, and 1.5 million died from the disease, mostly in low and middle-income countries. This also makes it the leading cause of death from an infectious disease.
  • World TB Day is one of eleven official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO), along with World Health Day, World Chagas Disease Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, World Immunization Week, World Malaria Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Hepatitis Day, World Patient Safety Day and World AIDS Day.
  • This annual event commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacillus that causes tuberculosis (TB).
  • The theme for World TB Day is "The Clock is Ticking".

  • International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims is observed annually on 24th March every year. This day is observed on 24th March every year to pay tribute to "Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero" as he was murdered on 24 March 1980. He was actively engaged in criticizing violations of the human rights of the most vulnerable individuals in El Salvador.
  • The International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims aims to honour the memory of victims of gross and systematic human rights violations. It also aims to promote the importance of the right to truth and justice.

World Meteorological Day

  • World Meteorological Day is observed every year on March 23 to highlight the importance of the role that people and their behaviour play in protecting Earth's atmosphere. The day also commemorates the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), which is an intergovernmental body, on March 23, 1950. According to WMO's website, the day "showcases the essential contribution of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to the safety and wellbeing of society."
  • The day is celebrated to mark the establishment of WMO, which has 193 member countries and territories. The organisation originated from the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), the idea of which is rooted in the Vienna International Meteorological Congress 1873. WMO was then established by the ratification of the WMO convention in 1950 after which the organisation became a specialised agency of the United Nations (UN) in 1951. The headquarters of WMO are located in Geneva, Switzerland.
  • The theme of World Meteorological Day 2021 is "The Ocean, Our Climate and Weather."

India Participates in Nowruz Celebrations

  • The Indian Embassy in Beijing participated in the "Nowruz" which was held at the Secretariat of "Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)" in Beijing, China. Nowruz is the Iranian and Persian New Year Festival.
  • The celebration was participated by the Indian Ambassador Vikram Misri, along with the diplomats of other SCO member countries which include China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and India. More than 500 guests took part in the festival. During the celebrations, the Indian embassy showcased the performances of Yoga, Kathak and Indian cuisine. On the occasion, the Indian Ambassador also planted a Pine tree sapling as a symbol of nurturing of the friendship between India and SCO.
  • Nowruz is the Iranian New Year which is also known as Persian New Year. The New Year starts on the spring equinox or the March equinox which is marked as the first day of Farvardin. Farvardin is the first month of Iranian solar calendar. The day is celebrated across the world by several ethno-linguistic groups. Nowruz finds its origin in the Iranian and Zoroastrian culture. But the festival is celebrated by the diverse communities for 3,000 years in the Central Asia, Western Asia, Black Sea Basin, Caucasus, Balkans and South Asia. The Nowruz has been celebrated since 11th century CE when the Iranian calendar was reformed but the United Nations officially recognized "International Day of Nowruz" in the year 2010 with the adoption of UN resolution 64/253. The timing of Nowruz in Iran is based on the Solar Hijri algorithmic calendar. It is based on the precise astronomical observations.

World Water Day

  • World Water Day is observed annually across the globe on March 22 with the purpose of highlighting the importance of water and raising awareness about the water crisis that the world faces. According to the United Nations (UN) website, the main focus of the day is to support the achievement of sustainable development goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
  • The resolution to observe World Water Day was first adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 22, 1992, after which March 22 was declared as World Water Day and is celebrated around the world since 1993.
  • The theme of World Water Day 2021 is "Valuing Water" and has been chosen to highlight the value of water in our daily lives. "The value of water is about much more than its price – water has enormous and complex value for our households, food, culture, health, education, economics and the integrity of our natural environment.
