Javelin Throw Day

  • The Athletics Federation of India has decided that javelin throw day will be on 7th August every year in honour of Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra. The 23-year-old Neeraj is India's second individual Olympic gold medallist after Abhinav Bindra. Neeraj bagged the gold medal in men's javelin throw at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics on 7th August 2021.
  • Neeraj has scripted the history at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo when he threw the javelin to a distance of 87.58m to end India's medal drought in athletics at the Olympics. This is India's first-ever gold medal in athletics in the history of the Olympics. AFI's bid to name August 7 as Javelin Throw Day is an attempt to attract more youth towards the sport.

World Biofuel Day

  • August 10 marks the World Biofuel Day, which is dedicated to raise awareness regarding unconventional sources of fuels that could work as alternatives to fossil fuels. Biofuels are renewable, biodegradable, sustainable sources of energy. With the help of biofuels, one can decrease the import dependency on crude oil, and welcome a cleaner setting.
  • August 10 is marked as the World Biofuel day because on August 9, 1893 Sir Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the diesel engine, had run the mechanical engine with Peanut oil for the first time efficiently.
  • The theme for 2021 is "promotion of biofuels for a better environment".

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples

  • The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is observed on 9th August each year to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world's indigenous population. This event also recognises the achievements and contributions that indigenous people make to improve world issues such as environmental protection. It was first pronounced by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1994, marking the day of the first meeting of the UN Working Group on Indigenous Populations of the Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in 1982.
  • The 2021 commemoration of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples aimed on the theme "Leaving no one behind: Indigenous peoples and the call for a new social contract."

PM Narendra Modi Chairs UNSC Open Debate on Maritime Security

  • PM Narendra Modi chaired a UNSC high-level Open Debate on maritime security and became the first Indian Prime Minister to preside over a UN Security Council Open Debate.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin was among several other world leaders who participated in the virtual meeting. The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, President of Niger Mohamed Bazoum, President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta, Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Minh Chinh and the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) Felix Tshisekedi were some of the other dignitaries who participated in the event.

2nd IEEE International Conference on Range Technology by DRDO

  • The 2nd Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Scope Technology (ICORT-2021) took place in August 2021. The conference was held by the Institute Integrated Test Range (ITR) Chandipur, a laboratory of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). It was launched by the Department of Defense R & D Secretary-General and DRDO Chair Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy. The event brought together speakers from around the world who presented their technical achievements on multiple themes related to the testing and evaluation of defense systems.

National Handloom Day

  • August 7 is observed as National Handloom Day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement and to celebrate our country's rich fabrics and colourful weaves. The day is dedicated to raise awareness among the public and to increase the contribution towards the socio-economic development of the weavers. The day was first observed in 2015 by the Government of India.
  • The first National Handloom Day was organised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Chennai. The main aim of this day is to make people aware of the rich history of Indian handloom as synthetic fabrics have taken over the textile industry in the present era. Hence, the day is observed to celebrate India's rich fabrics and colourful weaves.
