Gujarat to Host Defence Expo 2022

  • The next Defence Expo will be hosted by Gujarat in 2022. This was announced by chief minister Vijay Rupani. The Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Department of Defence Production and the Gujarat Government in this regard. About 100 countries are expected to participate in this biannual event.
  • Defence Expo-2022 will be held in Gandhinagar from 10th to 13th March next year. The aim of Defense Expo 2022 is to move from Make in India to make for the world. The Defence Expo-2022 will focus on making India a Defence manufacturing hub.

International Day of Charity

  • The International Day of Charity is an international day observed annually on 5th September. It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. The prime purpose of the International Day of Charity is to raise awareness and provide a common platform for charity related activities all over the world for individuals, charitable, philanthropic and volunteer organizations for their own purposes on the local, national, regional and international level.
  • The International Day of Charity was conceived as a Hungarian civil society initiative supported by the Hungarian Parliament and Government in 2011, to enhance visibility, organize special events, and in this way to increase solidarity, social responsibility and public support for charity.
  • September 5 was chosen in order to commemorate the anniversary of the passing away of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 "for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace.

India Hosts 8th Meeting of Agriculture Experts of BIMSTEC Countries

  • India hosted the 8th Meeting of Agriculture Experts of Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Countries virtually. Dr Trilochan Mohapatra, Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research chaired the daylong meeting. Ministry of Agriculture said that experts of Agricultural Ministries from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand participated in the meeting. During the meeting, Dr. Mohapatra highlighted the UN Food System Summit 2021 and the transformations that are happening in the agriculture and food systems globally.
  • The BIMSTEC provides a unique link between South and South-East Asia with five countries – Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka from South Asia and two countries – Myanmar and Thailand from South-East Asia coming together on one platform for cooperation in 14 key economic and social sectors of the economy.

National Nutrition Week

  • Every year National Nutrition Week is observed from September 1 to September 7 to raise public awareness to vital indicators of their well-being and prosperity. People can learn about their nutritional and adaptive eating habits, which can help them obtain good nutrients.
  • National Nutrition Week was first marked in March 1975 by members of the ADA (American Dietetic Association, now — the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) to raise public awareness about the need of nutrition education while also promoting the profession of dietitians. The public response was so positive that the week-long celebration was expanded to a month-long event in 1980.
  • However, in India, the central government decided to launch a campaign, National Nutrition Week in 1982. The campaign was created to educate individuals about the significance of nutrition and to urge them to live a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.
  • Every year the National Nutrition Week has a theme and the theme for the 2021 National Nutrition Week is "Feeding Smart Right from Start".

Malaysia National Day

  • Malaysia National Day, which is also known as Malaysia Independence Day or 'Hari Merdeka' in Malay, is observed on August 31 every year to commemorate the Malayan Declaration of Independence of August 31, 1957. It is defined in Article 160 of the Constitution of Malaysia as the official Independence Day when the country gained its freedom from British rule.
  • Celebrations usually start in Malaysia from the beginning of August with various programs and national competitions. Owing to the celebrations, the month of August in Malaysia is also known as the National Month.
  • First Malaysian Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman led a delegation of ministers and political leaders of Malaya in 1956 to negotiate with the British for independence. An agreement was reached on February 8, 1956, for Malaysia to gain independence from British rule. However, due to some logistical and administrative reasons, the actual independence of Malaysia was declared next year on August 31, 1957.

National Small Industry Day

  • In India, the National Small Industry Day is celebrated on 30 August every year, to support and promote small Industries for their overall growth potential and opportunities received for their development in the year. The industry day is a medium to provide balanced growth to existing small, medium and large scale enterprises and render assistance for setting up new industries to boost the state's financial health.
  • Small scale businesses and cottage industries have worked a vital part in the Indian economy. The best quality gains have been produced in the base and cottage manufacturers of India. Although this area like other Indian businesses experienced a huge drop in British rule, it has grown at a very fast step after independence.

BRICS Environment Ministerial Meet 2021

  • India chaired Environment Ministerial meet 2021 and called for collective global actions against the environment and climate challenge.
  • India stressed the need for taking concrete collective global actions against the environment and climate challenge, guided by equity, national priorities and circumstances, and the principles of "Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC)".
  • The meeting was held virtually at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi, under the chair of India and was participated by the Environment Ministers from the BRICS nations. The meeting was preceded by the BRICS Joint Working Group on Environment meeting on August 26.
  • Bhupender Yadav, Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change chaired the meeting.

National Sports Day

  • National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29 to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Dhyan Chand. National Sports Day is also observed to spread awareness on the importance of sports.
  • Known as 'Hockey Wizard' for his outstanding skills and understanding of the game, Dhyan Chand helped Indian team win gold medals consecutively in three Olympics - 1928, 1932 and 1936 Summer Olympics.
  • On this day, the President of India honours eminent sports personalities with major awards.

International Day against Nuclear Tests

  • The International Day against Nuclear Tests is observed on August 29. It was established on December 2, 2009, at the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly by the resolution 64/35, which was adopted unanimously.
  • The resolution in particular calls for increasing awareness about the effects of nuclear weapon test explosions or any other nuclear explosions and the need for their cessation as one of the means of achieving the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world. The resolution was initiated by Kazakhstan together with several sponsors and cosponsors to commemorate the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site on August 29, 1991.
