World Alzheimer's Day

  • On September 21, the world acknowledges World Alzheimer's Day with the goal of raising awareness of the disease, common symptoms, and risk factors.
  • This day raises awareness of the cause and severity of Alzheimer's disease, and it is observed throughout the month in certain countries. Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain condition that gradually deteriorates memory and cognitive abilities, among other things.
  • In 1984, Alzheimer Disease International was formed, and on their tenth anniversary in 1994, they announced the inaugural of World Alzheimer's Day, to be marked on September 21, while World Alzheimer's Month was started in 2012.

International Day of Peace

  • September 21 is commemorated as the International Day of Peace world over. The United Nations describes this day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. Around the world some countries continue to share borders that have had a violent and bloody past and some still continue to maintain peace through all the political tensions.
  • The UN General Assembly established the International Day of Peace in 1981. Twenty years after the day was established, the UN General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the day as a period where countries practiced non-violence and cease-fire.
  • The theme for International Day of Peace 2021 is "Recovering Better for an Equitable and Sustainable World."

Nepal Observes Constitution Day

  • Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba underlined the need to protect and implement the country's Constitution as the Himalayan nation observed its seventh Constitution Day.
  • Nepal celebrates the promulgation of its Constitution on September 19.
  • Deuba expressed pride over the promulgation of the Constitution six years ago by the representatives elected by the people.
  • "The Constitution of Nepal is a realisation of the dreams of the immortal martyrs and the aspirations of the Nepali people", said Deuba.

World Bamboo Day

  • World Bamboo Day is celebrated on September 18 annually. Bamboos are used for various purposes mainly in East and Southeast Asia.
  • It is observed to raise awareness about the fast-growing grass plant Bamboo. World Bamboo Organisation (WBO) has come forward to build awareness, to protect natural resources, and the environment, to ensure sustainable utilisation, etc.
  • World Bamboo Organisation (WBO) declared the day officially on September 18 at the 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok in 2009.

36th International Coastal Clean-up Day

  • The 36th International Coastal Clean-up Day was celebrated on September 18, 2021.
  • The day was celebrated by the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) at Visakhapatnam.
  • As part of the day, ENC carried the Coastal Clean-up Drive at Yarada Beach, Bheemili Beach and other sea fronts in the premises of Naval units of Visakhapatnam.
  • The clean-up drive was launched with the aim of creating awareness among people to keep beaches clean, safeguarding our environment and inculcating the habit of respecting the coastlines which ultimately nurtures the marine biodiversity.
  • The day is traditionally held on the third Saturday of September. In 2021, this day was observed on September 18.
  • International Coastal Clean-Up Day 2021 was celebrated under the theme: "Keep trash in the bin and not in the ocean".
  • The International Coastal Clean-up was started by the Ocean Conservancy in 1986.

World Patient Safety Day

  • World Patient Safety Day (WPSD), observed annually on September 17, aims to raise global awareness about patient safety and call for solidarity and united action by all countries and international partners to reduce patient harm. Patient safety focuses on preventing and reducing risks, errors and harm that happen to patients during the provision of health care.
  • World Patient Safety Day is one of 11 official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).
  • Each year World Patient Safety Day has a theme and the theme for World Patient Safety Day 2021 is 'Safe and Respectful Maternal and Newborn Care'.

India-Chile 7th Foreign Office Consultations

  • The 7th Foreign Office Consultations between India and Chile were held in Santiago.
  • India was represented by Secretary (East) in Ministry of External Affairs Riva Ganguly Das.
  • Chile was represented by Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ms. Carolina Valdivia Torres.
  • During the consultations, both sides reviewed their bilateral relations including trade & investments, agriculture, defence, health & pharmaceuticals, space, energy, disaster management, cooperation in Antarctica, cultural & consular issues.
  • They also exchanged talks on COVID-19 situation and possibilities of enhancing trade & investment partnerships in post covid-19 pandemic economic recovery.
  • Chile acts as window to Latin America and to Pacific Alliance for India. It is the fifth largest trading partner of India across the Latin American region. Both the countries signed the Preferential Trade Agreement in 2017 in order to enhance the trade. Bilateral trade between both the countries is growing with time. Both the countries are partners in International Solar Alliance as well. In 2019, 70th year of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations was commemorated.

World Ozone Day

  • World Ozone Day also known as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is observed on September 16, every year. The day reminds the signing of the Montreal Protocol on substances that depletes the Ozone Layer. On this day people from all over the world are expected to join the Montreal protocol for talks and seminars.
  • Life is not possible on Earth without the ozone layer. It is found in the upper layers of the atmosphere and is a highly reactive gas. It protects life on Earth by absorbing Sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation and so is also known as Ozone Shield.
  • The theme of World Ozone Day 2021 is 'Montreal Protocol – keeping us, our food, and vaccines cool'. As per the UN, this year the day highlights, Montreal Protocol does so much more like slowing climate change and helping to boost energy efficiency in the cooling sector, which contributes to food security.
