International Day of Human Fraternity

February 4 marked the International Day of Human Fraternity. The annual event designated by the United Nations honours the religious and cultural diversity present in our world. Amidst rising religious intolerance in parts of the world, International Day of Human Fraternity seeks to showcase how diverse religions and cultures enrich our life and progress as humankind.
In 2020, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed February 4 as the International Day of Human Fraternity, with resolution 75/200. However, the core essence of the ideology behind this day has been present since 1999.
Theme 2022 for International Day of Human Fraternity was "Human Fraternity in Action" which means that humanity has decided to disperse and renounce all kinds of religious bigotry and xenophobia.

Sri Lanka's Independence Day

Sri Lanka's Independence Day or National day is celebrated annually on February 4 to commemorate the country's political independence from British rule in 1948. It is celebrated all over the country through a flag-hoisting ceremony, dances, parades and performances. Usually, the official celebration takes place in Colombo, where the President raises the national flag and delivers a nationally televised speech.
It was after 450 years of colonial rule, under three of Europe's maritime and military powers that Ceylon gained her independence from Great Britain in 1948.

World Cancer Day

Every year, World Cancer Day is observed on February 4 to raise awareness about cancer and encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment.
World Cancer Day was established on February 4, 2000 at the World Cancer Summit against Cancer for the New Millenium, which was held in Paris.
The Charter of Paris Against Cancer, which was created to promote research, prevent cancer, improve patient services, also included an article establishing the anniversary of the document's official signing as World Cancer Day, was signed at the Summit by the then General Director of UNESCO, Kōichirō Matsuura, and then French President Jacques Chirac in Paris on February 4, 2000.
The theme for World Cancer Day 2022 was "Close the Care Gap". The theme aimed to raise awareness about the vast difference in cancer care and prevention that people from different sections of society can avail. People with low income, lack of educational qualifications, and disabilities face considerable barriers in availing care for cancer.

The Tribune Celebrates Foundation Day

Floral tributes were paid to The Tribune founder Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia on the 141st anniversary of the publication.
A great visionary and philanthropist, Majithia founded The Tribune on February 2, 1881, in Lahore. Members of The Tribune Trust Justice SS Sodhi (retd) and Gurbachan Jagat; Punjabi Tribune Editor Swaraj Bir Singh, Dainik Tribune Editor Raj Kumar Singh and General Manager Vinay Verma paid tribute to Majithia. Hundreds of employees also remembered the founder on the occasion.
The Tribune is an Indian English-language daily newspaper published from Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Bathinda, Chandigarh and New Delhi.
The Tribune has two sister publications: Dainik Tribune (in Hindi) and Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi). R. K. Singh is the Editor of Dainik Tribune and Sahitya Akademi Award winner and prominent Punjabi playwright Swaraj Bir Singh is the editor of the Punjabi Tribune. The online edition of The Tribune was launched in July 1998, and the online editions of the Punjabi Tribune and Dainik Tribune were launched on 16 August 2010.

World Wetlands Day

World Wetlands Day is observed on February 2 every year to raise global awareness about the importance of wetlands, not only for people but the planet Earth as well. The day also marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on February 2, 1971.
This is the first year when the World Wetlands Day was observed as a United Nations international day, following its adoption by the UN General Assembly on August 30, 2021.
The UN defines wetlands as ecosystems where water is the primary factor controlling the environment and the associated plant and animal life.
The theme for World Wetlands Day 2022 was 'Wetlands action for people and nature', highlighting the importance of actions to ensure the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands for humans and planetary health.

Indian Coast Guard Day

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) celebrated its 46th Raising Day on February 1. From just seven surface platforms in 1978, the ICG has grown into a formidable force with 158 ships and 70 aircraft in its inventory and is likely to achieve targeted force levels of 200 surface platforms and 80 aircraft by 2025.
As the fourth largest Coast Guard in the world, it has played a significant role in securing the Indian coasts and enforcing regulations in the maritime zones of India.
One of the primary duties of the Indian Coast Guard is prevention of smuggling along maritime routes in its area of responsibility.
The Indian Coast Guard was created on February 1, 1977, as an interim body, to patrol the coastal areas and prevent smuggling activities. The maritime agency was then formally established the following year as per the Coast Guard Act. The Indian Navy was established on January 26, 1950, as a naval branch of the Indian Armed Forces.

NPCI Announces UPI Safety and Awareness Week

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the UPI ecosystem (comprising of leading banks and fintechs) have announced the UPI Safety and Awareness initiative, to create awareness amongst consumers. Under this initiative, NPCI and the UPI ecosystem is being observe from February 1-7 as 'UPI Safety and Awareness Week' and the whole of February as 'UPI Safety and Awareness Month'.
NPCI urged users to follow the concept of UPI Safety Shield which mentions 5 tips for safe UPI transactions. With an aim to create awareness amongst consumers, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the UPI ecosystem have announced the UPI Safety and Awareness initiative.
Under this programme, NPCI urges all the customers to follow the concept of UPI Safety Shield, which the company has derived to educate customers all about UPI payments. The UPI Safety and Awareness initiative will help vulnerable and first-time customers in overcoming their fears of adopting digital payments and guide them to pursue safe payments on the UPI platform.

CRPF Decides Date of Its Anniversary

The Central Reserve Police Force will henceforth celebrate its anniversary on March 19 every year instead of on different dates every year, rechristening the occasion as 'CRPF Day', News18.com has learnt. The parade held to mark the occasion will also be called 'CRPF Day Parade' instead of 'Anniversary Day Parade'.
The CRPF is the only paramilitary force in the country that deviates from its original date of creation, choosing to celebrate the occasion every year on one of the four symbolic dates associated with it:
March 19, when then Union home minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel presented the President's Colours award to the force in 1950.
July 27, when the CRPF was originally raised as the Crown's Representative Police in Madhya Pradesh's Neemuch in 1939
October 31, the birth anniversary of India's first home minister Sardar Patel
December 28, when the Crown's Representative Police was redesignated as the Central Reserve Police Force through the CRPF Act in 1949
The choice of date from among these varied every year in the past depending on the weather conditions and availability of chief guests.
The force has now finalised March 19 to mark its anniversary every year. July 27 and December 28 were reportedly ruled out due to unpredictable weather in monsoon and winter months, while October 31 was avoided since the day also marks former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary.

World Leprosy Day

World Leprosy Day is celebrated in India on January 30 every year on Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary while the day is observed annually on the last Sunday across the globe. The day is aimed at celebrating people who have experienced leprosy, raising awareness of the disease, and calling for an end to leprosy-related stigma and discrimination.
This date was chosen by French humanitarian Raoul Follereau as a tribute to the life of Mahatma Gandhi who had compassion for people afflicted with leprosy. The day began to be observed in 1954.
Leprosy is one of the oldest recorded diseases in the world.
The theme for World Leprosy Day 2022 was 'United for Dignity'.

Martyrs' Day 2022

Martyr's Day or Shaheed Diwas is observed every year on January 30 in the memory of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated at Gandhi Smriti in the Birla House by Nathuram Godse in 1948. This year (2022) the nation observed 74th Martyrs' Day or Shaheed Diwas. The day is observed to remember the sacrifices made by freedom fighters in the struggle for India's independence and to pay our respects to them. Notably, Martyrs' Day is also observed in India on March 23 to pay respect to Bhagat Singh, Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, who was hanged death on this day in 1931.'
