Lt. Gen. Asim Malik New DG of Pakistan's Spy Agency ISI

  • Lt. Gen. Muhammad Asim Malik was appointed as the new Director General of Pakistan's spy agency - Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
  • Lt. Gen. Malik, currently serving as an adjutant general at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, will assume his new role on September 30, replacing the current DG Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum.
  • The ISI chief is appointed by the Prime Minister but as part of a tradition he executes this power in consultation with the army chief.
  • The post of ISI chief is considered one of the most important in the Pakistan Army, which has ruled the country for more than half of its 77-plus years of existence and has hitherto wielded considerable power in matters of security and foreign policy.

Alok Ranjan New NCRB Chief, Amit Garg to Head Police Academy

  • Senior IPS officers Alok Ranjan and Amit Garg were appointed as the chiefs of National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) and Hyderabad-based Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) respectively.
  • Ranjan, a 1991-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, was appointed as the Director, NCRB for a tenure up to his superannuation on June 30, 2026.
  • He succeeded his service and batchmate Vivek Gogia, who has been repatriated to AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory) cadre.
  • Garg, a 1993-batch IPS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the Director, SVPNPA for a term up to his retirement on October 31, 2027.

World Boxing Champion Nikhat Zareen Joins Telangana Police as DSP

  • Nikhat Zareen, a world boxing champion and Olympic athlete, joined the Telangana Police as the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Special Police).
  • She officially took on her new role by submitting her joining report to the DGP of Telangana Police.
  • Zareen's new position follows her participation in the Paris Olympics. Competing in the women's 50 kg category, she lost to China's Wu Yu in the pre-quarterfinals. Zareen, who contested as an unseeded boxer, acknowledged that this was the hardest loss she has faced.

China, Nepal Armies Hold 10-day Joint Counter-terror Drills

  • According to the annual plan agreed by China and Nepal, the militaries of the two countries are holding 'Mt Everest Friendship 2024' joint army training. This is the fourth round of military drills between the two armies.
  • The drills aim to enhance capabilities in disaster management, humanitarian assistance, and United Nations peacekeeping missions, according to a statement from the Nepal Army Directorate of Public Relations and Information.
  • The exercise, taking place in Chongqing from September 21 to October 1, focuses on knowledge sharing in disaster management, counter-terrorism, and peacekeeping operations.

IPS Officer Anurag Garg Appointed as New NCB Director General

  • Anurag Garg, a 1993-batch IPS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, was appointed as the Director General of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). Currently serving as Additional DG in the Border Security Force (BSF), Garg's tenure as NCB DG will last until May 23, 2026, or until further orders.

National Symposium 'Exercise AIKYA' on Disaster Management

  • The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), in collaboration with the Southern Command of the Indian Army, organised a two-day national symposium, 'Exercise AIKYA', on disaster management in Chennai.
  • The primary aim of the exercise was to enhance disaster preparedness and foster robust collaboration among key stakeholders. The exercise will feature simulations, technology discussions and expert insights into various roles of disaster management.
  • Representatives from Railways, transport, civil aviation, health, environment and climate change departments State and National disaster management authorities and the Indian army were present.
